It does work, and you can do the same with a 24hz flash synced to shutter, cause basically it is phasing all of the other drops out of sync with the shutter apart from those shown. So the camera renders all those 'faster' drops out, and leaves only the ones in sync with the 24hz sound, which makes the camera see it as a still picture.
