Malawi's albinos are at risk of "total extinction" amid escalating attacks against them for their body parts, the United Nations warned.
Albinism is a genetic condition that leads to little or no pigment in the eyes, skin and hair. The southern African nation has about 10,000 albinos, according to the U.N.
In some African countries, albinos' body parts are believed to bring wealth and good luck. As a result, attackers chop off their limbs and pluck out organs, and sell them to witchdoctors.
Even after albinos are killed, some attackers go a step further and steal their remains from graveyards, said Ikponwosa Ero, the United Nations' expert on albinism

"Persons with albinism, and parents of children with albinism, constantly live in fear of attack," she said. "Many do not sleep peacefully and have deliberately restricted their movement to the necessary minimum."
Jesus christ
Bad enough when you hear about animals being poached for use in traditional medical systems, but it's that much more horrifying when people are literally being chopped up thanks to some bullshit claim by retarded idiots that bits of human beings will bring you good fortune.
This was a report i wasn't expecting to hear anytime soon.. Just disgusting.
i can't even fathom what mindset a large group of people have to get in to rationalize hacking off the body parts of someone to sell to witch doctors
Africa is just kinda fucked forever isnt it? Nothing good ever seems to happen there.

It's very slowly improving, maybe one day.
Definitely heard about this before. What a weird concept, I wonder if there is a story behind this practice.

here's a pdf you might find interesting.
The practice itself is pretty old, dating back hundreds of years at least. There's a number of myths in african communities prevalent against albinos as well, for example the one where they're said to never die and are basically ghosts.

It is. You have a few countries here and there which are better than the others are, but for the most part, the continent is just a shithole of bizarre traditions and absurd superstitious/religious crap. When they're not going after albinos, they're going after gays; when it's not the gays, then they're treating women like they're second-class citizens. And if it's not either of those things, then it's always something else: tribes getting into it with each other, governmental corruption, coups and civil wars, etc.
It's for the most part a broken place. Maybe it will change someday, but at this rate, that's not going to happen. At least not for a long, long, long time yet.

Africa kinda consists of more than one country, with pretty big differences between them.

Still there's a common thread of doing really crazy and dangerous stuff, like some of the fgm cases which they literally sew a woman's vagina shut, like anyone with even a slight bit of understanding of how things work could see the why this would be a terrible idea, even before you get into the social stigma of not having fgm done
Or the insurance of walking dozens of miles a day to get water individually when in quite a few cases, actual wells are right in town
