He (they?) works fast.
Some of those low-poly shots look almost like google earth's interpolated 3d views with how round the models are.
somewhere a graphics programmer on the xbox team is sobbing deeply
I think this is the one case where I can say it's less due to console limitations, more due to the game being an absolute mess in optimization.
That very first clip of the Xbox One's release is a little disingenuous since the shitty game experience is almost entirely Bluehole's fault and not the Xbox's. (Not that anything about the XB1 is "amazing" in my opinion, but I digress.)
To be fair, it runs like ass on PC too. Combine that with a slower console and it doesn't shock me.
Hey, instead of setting our man power to improve the performance on the PC version lets put a chunk of our manpower towards porting it to consoles so Xbox One and PC players can suffer. Think about all the idiots that will buy this garbage on the Xbox! Think of the moneyyy

While it's still a far cry from truly optimized, the current test client is definitely a solid improvement. I am, by no mean, excusing this port. They seem to have rushed for that holiday release to try to milk as many buyers as possible which is pretty sad.

Think of the moneyyy
The sort of optimizations required to get this game running well on consoles would do wonders on the PC space aswell, this game is a nightmare in terms of CPU usage and LOD streaming woes. I'm glad to be rocking a R7 1700 so I'm not plagued by Google Street gaming. [editline]13th December 2017[/editline] Also fuck these auto-lod models, this is not acceptable at all.
I wonder if they still calculate bullet collisions on clientside, letting you shoot through walls if the walls haven't loaded in
performance aside, how did they neglect to add any sort of aim assist into the game
I got this for xbone because my PC has trouble running the game. Oh my God the lack of am assist is awful. It's like drunk people trying to fight. You have to basically camp in this to get kills.
I wonder if they still calculate bullet collisions on clientside, letting you shoot through walls if the walls haven't loaded in
You bet they do.
performance aside, how did they neglect to add any sort of aim assist into the game
Because this is meant to be cross platform and I can't think of anything more exploitable or controversy-starting than an in-game aimbot.
that was painful to watch
that was painful to watch
I've never played a console shooter, but wouldn't most of them pretty much look like that without aim assist on? Jesus. Shit looks painful.
Because this is meant to be cross platform and I can't think of anything more exploitable or controversy-starting than an in-game aimbot.
They could always have an aim assist only gamemode so console players don't fucking suck.
Also can we please get an Irish gamedev who doesn't release a broken game? If people sense a pattern we'll end up with another national stereotype in addition to drinking, fighting, and guilt
Some of those low-poly shots look almost like google earth's interpolated 3d views with how round the models are.
tbh I want people to make that a shooter city scale battle royale
They could always have an aim assist only gamemode so console players don't fucking suck.
And then a PC or console player gets one of those KB/M to controller adapters and now you have keyboard + mouse AND aim assist.
there are ways around this, just have aim assist vs non assist lobbies like gta not having aim assist on a console shooter is flat out retarded, the things need it to actually be playable
Now you've split your community in two. Might as well just not be multi-platform.
There are always going to be M+KB adapters for console shooters, fucking up normal peoples' experience or dividing the playerbase is not the solution. It really should be up to Microsoft and Sony to make these things not work but it's not looking like that is going to happen, if it's even possible to do so. I'd venture a guess that it's not possible on a technical level at all. This is one of several reasons I'd never play a shooter on console.
Those console KB+M adapters are awful and never feel like real mice though.
tbh I want people to make that a shooter city scale battle royale
I can see the headlines now. YOUNG CHILDREN TRAINED TO BE MASS SHOOTERS BY ONLINE VIDEO GAMES? This shocking new murder game allows YOUR children to use YOUR town to prepare for mass shootings!
Those console KB+M adapters are awful and never feel like real mice though.
They feel terrible but are still way more accurate than a gamepad.
I never really got a hang of playing and aiming with a game controller, it just seems so damn hard.
Why even bother? It runs like shit on computers, its obviously gonna run much worser on any console. Why would anyone submit themselves to it on a console? As if the graphics aren't enough, the input delay and the sole fact that you're using a gamepad for rather precise aiming at times should be enough to tell you to get a good PC if you really want to play it, or just don't even think about spending money on the console version.
tbh I want people to make that a shooter city scale battle royale
My point really was that google earth models can be loaded in an internet browser. The biggest games on consoles right now are open-world and have maps and environments equivalent in size to PUBG. The only hard-stop for this game should be network related, loading in LODs for standard boxy buildings no matter how complex was something PS3 and Xbox 360 are both well capable of even in ports of high definition games. They rushed the port for hot holiday cash at microsoft's expense and now risk bad word-of-mouth on top of it.
I think this is the one case where I can say it's less due to console limitations, more due to the game being an absolute mess in optimization.
i missed this thread in my "read" list, but yeah. They're lacking a shitload of really basic optimization techniques for the game, stuff that does not require using the features of the platform API as best as you can. if they had done that, then they'd have to consider using the platform API better. As an example, I have to wonder if they even thread much of the resource transfer to the GPU. Does it use DX12? I only use vulkan at work but I know DX12 offers tons of ways to offload work from the CPU to the GPU, and there are much better resources out there on how to improve DX12 performance than they are even basic articles for Vulkan lol. There's really no excuse to be this far into the games lifetime and not have better optimizations going for it, beyond digging yourself into a legacy code hellhole (which is just as bad)
