First thread iv'e posted like this in a while so lets see how this goes. UK - BBC 1 - Sundays 9 pm US - BBC America Airs 19th January Ripper Street is a BBC mini series set in Whitechapel, London's East End 6 months after the infamous Ripper murders. The series follows H Division, the men responsible for not finding the elusive Ripper, as they try to maintain order in the square mile of London. Despite the billing, so far the story does not really have anything to do with Jack the Ripper 'yet' but that may change. Main Cast Matthew Macfadyen - Detective Inspector Edmund Reid The boss of H Division, Reid was one of the lead detectives on the Ripper investigation (working side by side with the more historically celebrated Frederick Abberline). But unlike Abberline, when the hunt for the killer was given up in early 1889, he didn’t return to Scotland Yard. He stayed exactly where he had been for the last two years, policing the same streets – the streets down which he hunted the Ripper, the streets which will always remind him of his failure. He has known tragedy – the full details of which are known only to himself. He carries a serious injury to his left shoulder that attests to this. Only a very few know how he came by the wounds. None of them talk about it because what they see is a man fighting to find someone from his past – someone many believe to be a ghost. Because – and this is crucial to his belligerent breed of optimism – Reid has to believe a better day is coming. As such, he has become both committed technophile and progressive atheist. The world – its many despairs – will be healed by science and freedom from suspicion. Any time he allows himself away from work, he is to be found sitting attentive in the lecture halls of The Royal Academy or The Royal Institute; the knowledge he gains here aiding him in his investigations. But this knowledge comes at a price – the ever growing conviction that, had science and technology only moved faster, he would have found the Ripper. This haunts him too. He wrestles to ensure that ignorance – or innocence – will never stand in his way again. Jerome Flynn - Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake Drake is Reid's right-hand man. A brute of a detective who, outside of his suit, doesn't have a lot to distinguish him (on face value) from the thugs he polices. Drake is ex-army and hard as Portland stone. He is also fiercely loyal to Reid. It was the Inspector who first saw the potential in him – beyond a supreme ability to crack heads. Crucially, Drake – unlike many coppers – does not see himself as morally superior to the populace he polices. He has known the horrors of war and knows of what monstrosities all men, including himself, are capable; horrors that will come back to haunt him. Above all else, Drake wishes to find a way to escape his thug status and the dehumanising memories he carries with him. Adam Rothenberg - Captain Homer Jackson An American army surgeon, he is an expert in the world of early forensics. Enlisted by Reid for his unique skills on the autopsy slab, he is a free spirit, untrustworthy and brilliant by equal measure. Jackson has a thirst for vice in all its forms: women; booze; drugs; gambling. Drake hates him, worrying over his boss’ attachment to the man, while the rest of the policing fraternity view him with distrust at best – but Reid recognises his brilliance and in H Division what Reid wants, he gets. Jackson has his secrets too. On the run from an 'incident' in the U.S., he and the up-market brothel-keeper, Long Susan, have sought out the East End precisely for its chaos and lawlessness. It is a good place to hide. Reid’s attachment to Jackson (and the friendship two such like minds inevitably foster) will inevitably compromise this need for secrecy. MyAnna Buring - Long Susan Like Jackson, “Long” Susan Hart is also hiding out in the neighbourhood, on the run from the same incident in America. Her past is a mystery, but she has exercised well-honed skills in business and self-promotion to survive and now runs one of the most salubrious brothels in the district. Though it irks her enormously, Jackson comes and goes as he pleases through the brothel in which he keeps his shambolic rooms. The frequent ferocity of their arguments often lead the other girls to wonder just why they tolerate each other, but their passionate exchanges hide a shared affection that their exile hasn’t completely extinguished. Despite her need to keep a low profile, Susan has a strong protective sense regarding the women in her employ and will act to defend, shelter and provide for them – although not without some annoyance at costs involved and profits lost. Susan is well educated, assertive and knows exactly how to manipulate the desires of men. She’s also brazen, quick to anger and ferocious in a fight. We're now 3 episodes in and it's steadily getting better. It's not for the faint hearted as it can be quiet graphic (Violence, Gore, nudity ect) which is un-characteristic for BBC program but it's a pretty decent show and I'm enjoying it a lot. Check it out if your interested.
