"Doctors have confirmed the death of seven people, while an eighth is in hospital in a serious condition," Magdalena Bilinska, a fire brigade spokeswoman in the village of Karczowka, told Poland's TVP public broadcaster. The accident occurred on a family farm as the victims were reportedly trying to empty the tank, according to TVP. A woman reportedly drove a tractor onto the tank's cover, which gave way. Seven family members who tried to rescue her were likely overcome by noxious gases and also fell into the tank, which measures 50 square metres (535 square feet) by three metres (10 feet) deep.
Such is life in Poland
Shitty.
That's some Gypsy curse type pigshit right there.
This is more common than you'd think. These shit pools produce a lot of poisonous gases, that'll kill you in a few minutes. Often people will try to rescue people already passed out or dead, and will then breathe the gases themselves, also killing them. [editline]18th July 2014[/editline] Even people that've been farmers their whole lives have done this.
Such a terrible way to die
This must be especially terrible for the tractor driver and the one survivor.
didnt the same thing happen in the USA not long ago? but then a septic tank
This must be especially terrible for the tractor driver and the one survivor.
I presume that the tractor driver IS the one survivor. At least, that's how the article makes it out to be
didnt the same thing happen in the USA not long ago? but then a septic tank
It is a septic tank.
Gówniana sprawa.
Reminds me of the poisonous potato incident.
Shitty.
This is not up to snuff, I'm disappointed in you
That's a crap way to go.
"Drowning in shit" is a metaphor for life in Eastern Europe
Gówniana sprawa.
Przesrana jak nic.
didnt the same thing happen in the USA not long ago? but then a septic tank
It happens quite a lot.
Shitty.
sums up my thoughts about this post entirely
I wonder what different types of feces were in there? Scat, spraint, frass, possibly guano too? [editline]18th July 2014[/editline] i'm sorry this is terrible
I've heard of things really similar to this incident before; you wouldn't think it happens that much.

reminds me of this
A woman reportedly drove a tractor onto the tank's cover, which gave way.
Nice fuel for a sexist joke.
The strange thing to me is this happens so often I think it makes sense to be prepared to deal with it. I mean, if I was working on a farm or some other location with a massive tank like this then NO ONE gets to work near it till safety gear is in place. For instance, if you fall in I throw you a rope that is anchored to something sturdy, then I pull you out or you climb out. It seems to me that people who work near pits like this totally depend on the idea that they'll never fall in or have to rescue someone.

I fall in, you throw me a rope, I don't catch it because I'm unconscious and drowning in shit. As you can see this is a complicated situation that's basically best avoided like... well, like a tub full of noxious shit.
I never knew Bartertown was in Poland.

A nice idea would be to have a harness hooked up to a winch, either activated by some sign of you passing out, or someone looking over you.

I'm not going anywhere near something like that without whatever equipment they use when they recover the dead bodies. If safety gear isn't the answer, then that is what should be done- post a sign that reminds people "If you fall in you're dead...don't fall in".
If this is all true, does this mean you have a better chance of dieing in a tank full of shit then being struck by lightning?
Shitty.
why haven't news puns been made a bannable offence like, since day 1
