Ah much better
No Man's Citizen? This game seems to have so many features I wonder if it'll ever reach "feature complete" state
The scale of this is pretty ridiculous. Really hope its a success.

Uh, that planet might be producally generated, but i doubt it. Because the planet to the right is using a texture of venus colored grey. I've looked at waay too many maps of planets.

I mean. Both are planets. I cant see it being an exact copy. Can you make it transparent and rotate it ontop of it? I cant see it being the exact same
I don't really see the relation, they're both an orbital view of planetary terrain but the features don't line up.
They honestly don't even look similar? The two spots you've highlighted look distinctly different. On the planet in SC you've got two craters, one within the other, and on Venus you have - what are those, gorges? They don't look like craters and are next to each other, not one inside the other. They demonstrated the planet building tools live in this demo. The planets are procgenned and then fine tuned by the artists.

It's a mix of both. Their toolset for this is really powerful. The procgen engine already accounts for biomes, erosion etc. and makes very pretty vistas on its own. It's comparable to (better than?) Space Engine's generator.
maybe they also support simple insertion of existing map texture / height etc. dataset e.g. like Space Engine so it can handle procedural, predefined and manual input ... and Sol planets were used as quick testbed ? ;)
Holy fuck how did you catch that
I have made too many planet textures.
I was with you until i looked at higher resolution images.
I thought it was interesting and since I was texturing something at the moment anyway, I made that image a Normal map/diffuse at 1024x512 from what was plopped in the thread and slapped it over a cylinder unwrapped sphere, which I then messed around with the UV placement/scale until I got this: But as Lolkork already showed, there's not really a lot in common if you take the actual source file and try and match it up.

I'll be honest. I'm super surprised by this demo. I didn't think we'd ever see anything like this in Star Citizen. I've pledged, but I've always been a skeptic about the content. This is totally scripted, of course, but just being able to fly down and land on this planet would be more than I could have ever dreamed.
it's alright to be skeptical - not alright to be in denial do some research, try the alpha out during a free week, hell, borrow a facepuncher's account, there are plenty who will let you - don't just run around spewing when you don't know the current public build of the playable alpha is more game than NMS will ever be lmao
It's obvious to anyone with a pair of eyes that SC practically has a full game worth of content in it at this point, but I think it's perfectly reasonable to question whether it will really end up being "feature-complete" in the sense meaning every single promised feature developed, implemented and delivered in the same shape they were originally presented. I've bought a game pack so I'm not trying to spell out doom of any sort, but I do believe a realistic scenario involves a final product with some features being cut or significantly more simplified than anticipated at the present stage.
sandworm is borrowed from dune's shai-hulud more like
I'm sure it was intended to be a nod to dune in NMS too, but in light of all the recent news it's pretty safe to assume CIG felt it'd be a fun, relevant razz that stand-in sound for it was awful though
The devs have been very open about the fact that not every feature, nor all the content, will be finished as of the time that they leave beta and 'launch'. However, as the game is an MMO, they plan on providing ongoing support to fill those gaps in. The EVE Online of today is massively different from the first build post-beta. Some features are also going to be in simplified forms initially with more developed and comprehensive versions being fitted in later as they work through the priorities. They do have to release something sometime, they can't just be in closed development for a decade until all of the features are completed to their full satisfaction - Duke Nukem Forever was a good lesson in the need to ship before it's too late.
im a bit surprised at how well it seems to run considering all their previous demos have ran like trash, I'm assuming theres a fair bit of behind the scenes work going on to make this specific showcase run well.

can you say GET HYPED What are the 'capital planets' going to be like? I remember some time back they released a video of a ship making a scripted landing in a city but with their procedural worlds now a part of the game will they go back and actually make a full fledged developed world? Something about forming my own pirate crew and hiding out on some desolate world in a abandoned outpost appeals to me. With the terror and protection of the sandworm to deter all trespassers and goody two shoes.
Has the optimization gotten better? I want to enjoy this game mainly because just cruising through space in a freighter with friends sounds like hilarious fun.
I hope at the end of the mission you get to keep that hoverbike because that was fuckin rad, shame about the apc but what if he approached a different way? Does picking up that gun make it yours permanently? If you swap a weapon you find on the field do you lose it from your armoury?
