Since our founding as FileLeech almost 20 years ago, we have always strived to offer the best file hosting alongside quality gaming content. To all of our fans who have supported us throughout the years, we thank you for making us your destination for gaming files. Despite name changes, ownership changes, and staff changes, you have always made our jobs rewarding and fun. If you have files that you would like to save from the site, you will need to make sure that you have downloaded them prior to April 30. Any files not downloaded by that time will no longer be accessible. Again, thank you all for your support through the years. Game on!
Hah, beat me to it was just going to post a thread on this. I PM'd one of the head honchos, FileTrekker, he told me he's going to try to save every file hosted on the site, but that it won't be easy. Gave me this link and said to just download the things you want before April 30th. http://forums.filefront.com/forum-help-center/460933-mod-sites-directory-find-old-gaming-files-here.html Goddamn man it's so fucking sad. All the history of the site will be gone, jesus. [editline]14th April 2016[/editline] I really, REALLY fucking hope all of it can be archived. Particularly the Half-Life related things if I'm greedy.
This is pretty shitty for old games like Bridge Commander Filefront/gamefront is the go too site for mods some of which are 10-13 years old
Aw, Filefront was the best for games before 2010.
Fuck Gamefront, tons of good shit from the late 00's early 10's that I have been looking for a while were lost forever there. Rest in piss.
Why are they closing, though? I don't see any specific reasons.
It's been years since I've last heard of them, I'm surprised they didn't shut down sooner.
I remember when Computer Gaming World got really lazy with shit and stopped including CDs and just included a card with the website link.
Well. There goes all my Doom 3 and Quake 4 Mods. Damn it.
Isn't every moddb link ever about to shut down since they're hosted on gamefront?
^The Moddb team is in talks with them right now about saving some of the files.
This is sad. Back in 2006 I found the half life 2 filefront site. It's where I got my first copy of Garrysmod and the first site I became a contributor for, posting some news articles and such under SkyRider (who is also a FP member), I was 12/13 at the time. There were some old sound mods on filefront I might try and find to download before they disappear. It's a shame that some peoples work will disappear forever, but these things happen. Hopefully someone gets a full backup before the end of the month.
There's a full backup of the old JK2 and JKA filefront files here http://mrwonko.de/jk3files/ Also found a hl2 mod I 'made' 10 years ago http://www.gamefront.com/files/5496170/Half_life_2_Dual_357_Mod
If it isn't archived, some serious videogame history will be lost here.
I remember this being my go-to-place for UT2004 mods
So, how much data is there on the site ? Are there some estimates ?
Moddb is reaching out to the community for them to submit mods they'd want moddb to archive. http://www.moddb.com/groups/moddb/news/gamefront-is-closing-lets-save-the-mods A gentleman from the website Archiveteam posted in that link that they are currently working to back up everything they can.
Hi, I'm a member of a group called the ArchiveTeam which archives websites that are about to close. We actually put GameFront on our deathwatch list last year after they stopped posting news updates. Late last year we scraped the files they were hosting and every file that we've saved (which should be the vast majority of them) is available through the Internet Archive WayBack Machine (for example: Web.archive.org). That's not to say that you shouldn't make your own archives of content you care about (you definitely should!) but rest assured that there is a backup if all else fails.
This is excellent news! They have reportedly grabbed over 28 TB of data, but still recommend users download files as well.

But I guess games weren't 100GB back then as they are nowadays.
Hot damn there's a lot of Half-Life history up there, all those mods, map packs, even some of the first trailers for HL2 in .divx format. I wonder how many of the 28 TBs are made up of HL content, I think I'd like to have back-up for myself as well.
FileFront? Holy smokes, that was my go to place for demos!
always went on their sites years ago until i think they blocked my country or something i couldn't download or browse their site anymore still sad to see them go though
I remember when they banned my country too.
Oh fuck, there's a lot of older Total War mods hosted on gsmefront/moddb. Not good at all.
I remember using Gamefront for getting some mods, it was pretty good, until they decided that it's a good idea to make the page not available for most countries. Such a stupid idea.
I remember when Computer Gaming World got really lazy with shit and stopped including CDs and just included a card with the website link.
I kinda miss those demo CDs. Used to get them all the time from PC Gamer and PC Zone. Aye, that takes me back to when I were a teenage shut-in.
Oh wow it was region locked, so that's why I couldn't download anything? Good thing its getting closed.
Goodbye JK3Files :(
Oh wow it was region locked, so that's why I couldn't download anything? Good thing its getting closed.
Regionlock is stupid but it's a shame about all those files that are only on their site.
my goodness filefront, what a blast from the past.
All of the best in Battlefront 2 mods were on FileFront. And god damn some of them were really good too. Some good times indeed, though considering they pretty much fell off the map entirely I'm surprised they didn't close down sooner.
