• The Debating Thread

In this thread, I hope to promote some sensible, intellectually stimulating discussion with you guys and girls over topics relevant to today’s society, and the age we’re living in. These are some of the kinds of topics we’ll be debating over: Social Issues Ethical Issues Scientific Issues, Discoveries and Advancement Philosophical Discussion And more! So, let’s set some ground rules before we get started, so that we can keep this enjoyable. 1: If you’re not interested, don’t post. We don’t care if you think Debating is “layme”, we do care if you come in and shit up our thread. 2: Don’t make it personal. People will have differing views to you over certain things, that’s the point. Don’t resort to personal attacks or name calling; it just makes you look stupid. 3: Keep your cool. If someone’s making good points to combat yours, acknowledge them and do your best to refute them with your own. That’s what this is all about, remember! Don’t start raging if you’re losing an argument. Stop, cool off, and come back for the next topic. 4: Know what you're talking about. Please have a least some basic knowledge of the current topic, so that you don't make yourself look liek an idiot. Now, this is how it’s going to work: I post the discussion topic, and some basic information about it. You need to think for a second, get some info, and post your view/argument. Please state at the start of your post whether you are FOR or AGAINST the issue at hand, that way I can compile a list of the best quotes for each topic. I’ll probably change the topic whenever the current one gets stale, maybe each half-week or so, we’ll see how it goes. We’ll start with a classic: Topic No. 1: “Stem Cell Research is wrong.” A hot, relevant topic – Stem cells, are they the future of medicine or are they murder? Is it worth pursuing, when we could be focusing on refining what we already have? Make your arguments, and you tell me! Topic No. 1 Quality Quotes: For: "It's banned for humans because of the negative uses, not to mention against religious beliefs". - Karbinev2 "Something I do have against the whole stem cell thing is the issue that it could be taken too far." - A.C.I.D Against: "Opponents to stem cell research talk about 'tampering with nature' and this sort of thing. We have been doing that for centuries." - toxicpiano (User was banned for this post ("Wrong section." - ventilated))
I can't bring my self to actually take any facepunch thread I read seriously, let alone a debate. incoming disagrees.
Answer to Topic No. 1: Religion
Well, for me, the debate for stem cell research is practically over. I thought scientists already had a way of procuring omnipotent stem cells without having to fertilize an egg. [editline]10:18AM[/editline] Not a bad thread by the way. Should be interesting.
yeah this thread will work
I can't bring my self to actually take any facepunch thread I read seriously, let alone a debate. incoming disagrees.
Then you would have been better of not posting in this thread, don't you think?

You're starting off with a topic the majority of facepunchers agree on. Science > Religion is the belief here.
I'm a-okay with stem cell research - any kind. Recently more advances have been made with "adult" stem cells, which are effective yet don't involve killing anything. So it's a win-win situation.
Babies are not babies untill they take their first breath as far as I'm concerned. Considering the huge potiential for cures that these stems cells have I think its very stupid not to at least try and research it more.
You're starting off with a topic the majority of facepunchers agree on. Science > Religion is the belief here.
Judging from the regularity we get religious extremist threads, there's got to be opposition. Would you make a full point, to get us started?
Opponents to stem cell research talk about 'tampering with nature' and this sort of thing. We have been doing that for centuries. Selective breeding is a great example of this. Also the introduction of non indigenous animals for our own purposes.

I think stem cell research is fine. It's banned for humans because of the negative uses, not to mention against religious beliefs, which we all know, America is one of the largest countries to base its actions, judgement, and laws on what is "moral", and this "morality", comes from comparing decisions to the Christian bible. Creating life in the christian religion is supposed to be let to God, not man. That's a big reason for it being banned on humans, imo. What I mean by "negative uses", are the mass production of workers, soldiers, or just creating humans for a specified purpose, which is, not by religious morals, but by societal morals, wrong. If you've ever seen the movie The Island or The Sixth Day, you'll understand what I mean.
Adult stem cells are totipotent, and therefor can not change into any type of cell into the body.
I still think they're worth studying. There's a kind of cell called an "induced pluripotent stem cell." They took an adult stem cell and reprogrammed it to behave like an embryonic stem cell.

That was the technique I was trying to recall in my first post in this thread.
In this thread, I hope to promote some sensible, intellectually stimulating discussion
this is where i stopped reading, because this will never happen.
The OP is a reptile.
this is where i stopped reading, because this will never happen.
Guess you didn't get to the bit where I discouraged trolls. Go away.
Guess you didn't get to the bit where I discouraged trolls. Go away.
if you weren't so incompetent you wouldn't have to guess.

Stem cell research is a good step in the right direction.. I seem to remember reading an article about how stem cells could be harvested without killing a fetus, which is research that needs to be expanded on. We've seen how much stem cells can help, there just needs to be some more research into how to acquire them ethically.
I just started debating for my school this year. I find it's a bitch, when your adjudicator is just not even trying, like they don't give a damn because we're not as experienced as them etc. Loving it so far anyway.
Judging from the regularity we get religious extremist threads, there's got to be opposition.
You do know what a troll is, right?
You do know what a troll is, right?
Yes, but there are definitely serious threads along the same lines.
Oh and OP, I think you're going a little headfast with your first topic, start with something simple, and something that won't be divided into a great majority for this forum. Something like Cyclists aren't given enough safety on the roads would be much easier to debate and control in my opinion. Still a great thread.
fek dis

Morality, in my opinion, is just the average person's judgment of right or wrong. Besides, modern technology circumvents the killing of a fetus in order to obtain usable stem cells.
So, this is the place for Mass Debating? Gay.
