Five marshals were also injured in the accident. Four have minor injuries and a fifth has been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition, V8 Supercars boss James Warburton said in a statement. "Our number one priority is the safety of our drivers and officials. Our thoughts are with Chaz and his family and the marshals who do an incredible job," Mr Warburton said. "I'd like to thank the specialist emergency response teams and medical staff at the circuit." Track action was halted for the day after the incident. The V8 Supercars star pinballed off the walls as he reached the Forrest's Elbow section of Mount Panorama just minutes into the first qualifying session for Sunday's Great Race, narrowly missing track-side officials. His Ford team Prodrive Racing said that Mostert had communicated with them on the radio as an ambulance arrived on the track. Mostert's parents Eddie and Maree were looking on from the team garage. Red Bull Racing driver Jamie Whincup said the whole V8 Supercars community comes together whenever a shocking incident like the one today occurs.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-10-09/bathurst-qualifying-halted-after-chaz-mostert-suffers-crash/6842620 Video in article.
It was the first hit that did it. Smacked his leg against the shifter awkwardly and basically snapped the knee joint right off his femur. If you're squeamish you probably shouldn't watch the in-car angle. Leg flops in ways leg should never flop in, quite obvious. No blood or gore, but the way it moves as he bounces around after that first hit tells the tale.
Damn that's a crash. What a nasty looking corner too.
Luckily it didn't go trough that fence and killed those people standing behind.
Bathurst is a bastard of a track; I am surprised this doesn't happen more frequently.
Bathurst is a bastard of a track; I am surprised this doesn't happen more frequently.
It does in the other categories, just worth keeping in mind that many of the people who race in V8 Supercars are veterans of other categories such as Formula 3 and grand touring. Best of the best.
