Police released video Thursday of a highway shootout that started when a man pulled a gun during a routine traffic stop -- while his kids waited in the car.
Oregon State Trooper Matthew Zistel sustained a bullet wound in his side when John Van Allen II, 34, allegedly fired several shots at him on Interstate 84 in August, KGW reports. Allen -- a trained military veteran who was on a road trip with his three children -- was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest.
On the video released this week, Allen gets pulled over for speeding and exits his vehicle. He stands still, staring at Zistel. The officer tells him repeatedly to get back in the car, but Allen resists, and eventually pulls a handgun. He begins firing and taking cover behind the cop car, then retreats, showing no visible signs of injury. Zistel calls dispatch as Allen flees.
Sorry, was reading another article on the same news but it was badly worded.
But...Why did he start shooting?
Holy shit. What was the point? He tried to kill that policeman over a speeding ticket and got killed in front of his children.
Damn, wonder why he started shooting.
It's very hard to tell when did this Allen-character get hit on the video before fleeing.
fucking people, man. shit...

Straw that broke the camel's back.

I'm assuming it's around when he seems to stumble on the right side of the policeman's car near the end, I could be wrong though, seems he flinched slightly when the shots were first being fired too.
I'm very curious to the mans situation, nobody pulls a fucking gun over a speeding ticket, especially not if you're out on a road trip with your three kids.
snip nevermind
Stuff like this only ever seems to happen if drugs or military veterans are involved.
What is your point? Are you implying that only drugs or military induced mental instability is always involved?
He had the weapon full concealed to out, and shooting in less time than it took for the officer to say the word Sir. That's fast as dicks
It was speculated that the bullet that hit him in the chest caused him to accidentally eject his magazine, which is probably what saved the cop
maybe he started having a traumatic flashback or an episode or some shit, he was a veteran
I'm not condoning his actions but it's certainly a plausible reason for his bizarre behavior
I'd say the lack of proper mental healthcare for soldiers and veterans could be a contributing factor.

My money's on him being a sovereign citizen.
I've seen a few shooting videos but man, this one is bizarre as all hell.
I really cannot get my head around it, poor bloody kids.
I'm wondering how long it's gonna take the media to make a complete circus of this. It's not exactly controversial, if you fire a lethal weapon at the police they're going to shoot back, but I'm sure Fox and NBC will find a way to spin it into a story.
I don't see how a speeding ticket would induce any sort of violent flashback at all, nor does he look and act like he's under the influence of anything. All I can really say is that he had planned this before hand, I mean sympathy for the kids and family but not him, pulling a gun on a police officer for on a speeding ticket is just crazy and down right idiotic.
A+ reaction by the cop. He knew something was up and acted perfectly.
