The Blizzard Pet Store is offering two new virtual pets to World of Warcraft players today, one of which has generated over $2 million in sales in its first four hours.
The "Celestial Steed" (right) is, according to its description on the Blizzard Store, "freshly born from the Twisting Nether" and allows players to "travel in style astride wings of pure elemental stardust."
More research is of course necessary but as of press time, it is widely believed that the Celestial Steed may be the fanciest horse ever born.
The fancy horse costs $25 and offers no new abilities to players, only riding as fast as a character's riding skill will enable it to go.
According to wow.com, the download queue as of 1:45 Pacific time was at 80,000. At $25 a pop, this means that this noble steed has generated sales of $2 million since its approximate debut at 9:30 this morning, or around $500,000 an hour.
1UP has reached out to Blizzard for commentary from the horse, and will report back if he is available.
The next time you guys cry about your favorite game being ruined by overpriced DLC and godawful DRM, just look in the mirror. Look in the fucking mirror you dirty peasants.

:eng99:
Just heard about it earlier. So fucking overpriced.

$25 is practically 2 months of WoW
I read about it being released this morning.
:Dawkins102:
-snip-
I could think of so many better things to do with $25.
Holy shit, what fun it'd be to work for them.
This is why I stopped playing that shitty game. Blizzard's going to ride this for every last penny
I don't see why anyone would want to purchase this. It offers no abilities whatsoever. I suppose people think it might make their e-penis larger.
pure elemental stardust

Am I correcting in believing that it offers no capabilities for your character beyond what is already available in-game and its speed levels up exactly when you'd be able to get that same speed mount normally?
Dissssspicable
My friend told me about this. Makes me fucking laugh because back when I played wow, I didn't care how cool something looked, to me, it was all about how rare it was. And rare this ain't.
but it's so purty

Yeppers, you're paying $25 for a model and a texture.
i wish i shitted money
Blizzard are geniuses. I can't believe people are saying they're terrible for this. It's not their fault morons are willing to shell out $25 for something that is utterly useless. They offer a useless product people are willing to pay for for some reason.

If only I could make $2 million for minimal effort. Honestly that model couldn't have taken more than a week with a team of a few people (including textures, animations, game code, etc.). I might be seriously underestimating the work involved, but a team of experienced people should have no trouble with this.
Lol i like how you think this DLC or something, this is a fucking mount, which doesn't give you anything but a mount. stupid OP is stupid.

Oh of course not. Why change a system that has people shelling out exorbitant amounts of money for minimal product? Hell this business model has made them rich. The only incentive to change would be when people stop buying it, but with over 80,000 purchasing a $25 remodel I doubt there will be change anytime soon.

The only thing they had to do was make the texture. They simply use models, animations and game code of another flying horse (which there is.) and tada.
Ugh, WoW.

It's like they're making money by selling people a sign to hang around their necks that says, "I'm a retarded consumer."
One word.
Seriously?
isnt stardust just hydrogen and harmful radiation?
i thought some of the money made from these sales went to charity?
i don't understand how you guys are shocked or anything, it's not like blizzard is chunking this stuff down peoples throat to buy it..
and if 25 bucks is expensive for you get a job, holy shit.
Alright, Activision. $15 map packs that were already on the disc was really bad.
But $25 pixels are just crossing the line, especially considering how making the $$$ mini-pets and mounts literally requires little-to-no effort. A few hours, at most.
I shames me how some companies can blatantly money whore and still make a shitload of cash from people eating the shit up, while some companies like Valve offer tons of free content for a $20 game (once $2.50 on a sale) and earn their money.
This is really, really sad.
