• Want to play a new instrument

Hello. I've been a drummer since middle school, and lately I've been wanting to learn a new instrument. But being a drummer, I don't know anything about notes, octaves, all the basic music theory stuff. So I want your opinions on the matter. How did everyone here learn that basic music theory? How much importance do you place on it? Is music theory important when wanting to jam with some one (As in, a bass and guitar player playing together, having to match the cords or whatever else they have to match to make it work!) Would a music theory class be beneficial (My college has one)? I hope I can learn a lot more about music and the dedication it takes to get to a good level of playing. P.S: The instrument I am looking at is some kind of free-reed instrument, like a melodica or accordion. I have the most experience with keyboards since I took an electronic music class. I could never handle a guitar properly.
I am a drummer, did music GCSE and some how got a B, didn't understand the theory at all. Anyway, I picked up guitar just started to play around with chords, 20 min or so every other day and am okay at it, I recommend an acoustic guitar personally as it's easy to just pick up and play, I leave mine next to me when i'm on my laptop so when a game or something is loading I can have a quick strum!
I was just taught by someone a couple dorms down about cords and notes. And I can see why it is easy to start with a guitar. I finally know how people tune guitars, and I learned a lot about what frets are. I'm hoping I can also do something similar to that and just use the garage band keyboard whenever I'm bored.
Well, I've played trumpet since 5th grade and I abso-fucking-lutely love it. I'd just go for something brass if I Were you.
Well as long as you can play music you enjoy on it it's all good. Nothing worse than playing stuff you hate, especially when you just took up the instrument.
I play piano and I know the basics when it comes to music theory, but I'm more advanced in practic. I learned the basics by music in school and by taking lessons for piano (but I quit the lessons). I don't think music theory is that important, but it can always be good to know the basics!
For me one of the biggest advantages of music theory is in group situations. It makes it much easier to tell your ideas to the rest of the group rather than "well you play this note here for this long then you hold down these notes, then the drums come in with 'baddadadda tish boom boom' and then the guitars are all 'skrrrroooooooooooooooooooooooom'". Yeah you get my drift.

In regards to learning this, I am hoping to make a set up with my friend where we meet up every wednesday to teach me music theory. If I continue with it, the actual music theory class will be easier if I take it. I cannot make an accurate judgement in regards to how much this will help me. I will just have to wait and see.

GUYS!!!! It's brutally obvious that the electric guitar wins out. Or the sitar
Xylophone. No seriously, you can put it somewhere in your drum kit, and you could play both in one preformance. :buddy:
Jamaican gay whistle
fuck you guys synths are where it's at
I prefer a real grand piano.
I prefer a real grand piano.
Keyboard with both piano and synth sounds. The worm has turned, gentlemen.
Quiet you. And you. Woodwind is for awesome people!
You know who played a woodwind instrument? Adolf Hitler. Also play the Tuba. You already play the drums, and they're sorta similar instruments so you'll be good at it.
Don't listen to woodwind players theyre dum!
typical brass players. woodwind instrument is the way to go. start off with alto sax. easy to play, and make your way to soprano, tenor, clarinet, flute, etc. you'll be the coolest band geek out there. :D
Quiet you. And you. Woodwind is for awesome people!
When will you all learn you must conform to plucked-stringed instruments like everybody else. :cop:
trumpet is fucking easy.I would probably try that. [editline]02:46AM[/editline] I play trumpet and it was easy to learn.it was as easy as learn 15+230
I prefer a real grand piano.
Synths aren't made to be pianos, they're made to be synthesizers, with those god damn fat Saw bass goddamn Oh god arp odessy Oh god Motif XS
Unless you think of keyboards like the Motif, which isn't really a synth, it's a workstation. A $2800 workstation. Goddamn I need a better job.
Anyways, I learned theory with books only. It definitely helps if you want to write your own music (obviously) and if you want to improvise, knowing chord progressions and scales and all that will make things much easier.
Brass or woodwind instrument. I play brass, but it's not like i really care if you pick woodwinds over it. They're both cool.
Bah! Brass and woodwin instruments cost a ton of money. But then again, I want to learn theory before buying any instrument. So I don't think I have to worry about that for a while.
What would you guys recommend? Korg M3 or the Motif xs? The m3 is cheaper, but..
fuck that, go old skool, get a m1
