Not using one very often is better than not having one at all. I enjoy occasionally speaking to someone I haven't seen in a long time, and when shit like this happens I can enjoy it.

They got really bold with their ads, expecting people to pay for them, make a huge fuss about it or work for them until they are "allowed" to view their advertisement material or be thankful once they can see it, or once they are "allowed" to give them their money.
This just reminded me of that trend big time. "Want to make yourself more likely to spend money on our stuff? Yeah tough luck, you do something for that first buddy!"

You're all butthurt because I put in doubt the fact that "Many Facebook friends = popular". Go look back at the start of this though, and you'll see I never said that Facebook is useless or that it's stupid (I have Facebook and I use it), but you aren't a loser for not liking Facebook (for the record, I have nothing against Facebook, doesn't mean I think everyone who doesn't like it is a loser/no-life).
