RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — What began as a spontaneous trip to the store ended up being one of the most bizarre experiences of Ricky Berry’s life. He and his roommate went to purchase a grocery item and ended up having the police called on them.
Berry and his roomate told 8News they walked into the CVS in Carytown and asked an employee if they sold sliced cheese. The worker kindly replied that they did not.
A few minutes later, the employee — all of the store employees, in fact — were nowhere to be found. Berry and his roommate, Philip Blackwell, said they were in the store with another customer for more than 30 minutes alone before an officer with the Richmond Police Department showed up.
“We looked around for probably 30, 45 minutes and we couldn’t find anybody,” Blackwell said.
As for the third customer who was as confused as the two roommates, Berry said, “he was in the store before we were actually. He had a bad tooth, all he wanted was some Orajel. That’s all he needed.”
“We were walking around trying to find an employee, and the cop himself ended up opening up the emergency door, which set the alarm off,” Berry explained. “A couple of minutes later, he got the call from the alarm company asking what was going on.”

Eventually, the employees were found in the back of the store hiding in a locked room. After making a few calls, the officer told the customers they had to leave.
In one of the videos he recorded, Berry said, “We’re being kicked out because they were scared of us and hiding.”
So why were they scared?
So why were they scared?
the article doesnt explain that
So why were they scared?
Yeah the plot really thickens.
So the police and the company refused to let them in on what was actually going on?
Maybe it's a code phrase for something?
This is a stick-up see, Give me the goods see, Or you're gonna be sliced cheese see
It seriously bothers me why did this happen.
I NEED to know the reason why they were scared of the sliced cheese phrase.
I'm going to assume it was from their appearance. They seem thug-like. Still doesn't excuse the fact that they were wrongly accused of any harm.
The writer of the article neglected to mention the event from the employee's perspective because of confidentiality from the police.
from one of the people involved in the story

the city they live in is +50% black.

That post just raises more questions
The video says that some disturbance happened earlier in the same store, and the employees said that the two men who entered were "acting suspicious" so they called police and hid.

What a stupid thing to post if you're trying to clarify why you acted like goofballs.

It's probably less the sliced cheese and more the staff assuming the worst for some unknown reason. Considering an officer was there and tried to help them with matters they're certainly not in any distinct trouble personally, and it seems the store's gonna sack someone for it.

What? This isnt from one of the employees
This is what we in Ireland would call grotesque, unbelievable, buzarre and unprecidenyed.

I've dealt with people who were legit afraid to get out of their car because a few deer were grazing across the street. Some people are jumpy.

yes but every single employee in the store decided to hide in a room.
it was a group decision. multiple povs.
i dont know why they would get in that room
Sliced cheese is apparently a codeword for 'bomb'. The employees were clearly just demonstrating their up-to-date knowledge of terrorist-lingo. :v:

Depending on the situation a group can make it worse if they all feed the fear or irrationality.

Imagining all sorts of different testimonies from eye witnesses, all being different and cartoony crazy.
The employees must have forgotten that Carytown is a hipster enclave and nowhere near Church Hill.
Depending on the situation a group can make it worse if they all feed the fear or irrationality.
I believe the effect is called 'groupthink'.
Groupthink is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an irrational or dysfunctional decision-making outcome.
Essentially one person suggests [Thing] and nobody disagrees for a plethora of reasons (nobody knows about the subject and goes along / the superior of the group suggested [Thing] / multiple people agree with [Thing], causing others to reassess disagreeing / etc).
While I admit I'm not very well versed in American drugstores. Who the fuck goes to a CVS looking for deli cheese? Last time I checked drugstores don't have Deli sections. It was a huge over reaction on the staffs part, but to be fair if someone comes to your drugstore looking for deli products and then keeps looking around you can admit that it's a little strange. Perhaps that CVS has been hit before, maybe it's in or near a bad area, the article is way to vauge to take a side on this.

Most American drugstores (at least around here) are like mini grocery stores too. CVS I know for a fact has a refrigerator section with milk and other things too, so them having cheese is not out of the question.

Not that thug-like
Plot Twist: Its a secret group of Preppers and "sliced cheese" is their codeword for the start of the Apocalypse.
Intense stuff.

Thug-like? They're dressed like everyday people.
