India's radical Hindu nationalist party governing Mumbai has handed out kitchen knives and chili powder to women following a gang rape in the capital New Delhi that ignited a national debate on the best way to tackle sex crimes.
The Shiv Sena party, an ally of the main opposition BJP, said it had handed out 21,000 knives with three-inch blades to women in the city and surrounding areas and plans to distribute 100,000.
Oh boy...
I heard chili powder in the face hurts like a bitch.
Those are some awfully medical looking kitchen knives.
The Shiv Sena party
It makes sense now.
radical Hindu
haha, what
I heard chili powder in the face hurts like a bitch.
Well that probably explains why it's used in mace
I was going to make a women & kitchen joke with the "kitchen" knives, But i just couldn't think of one that could cut the mustard.
Whilst can understand the gesture and the apparent good will behind it, it seems kinda drastic, like putting down a dangerous pitbull terrier with a carpet bombing. Also, whilst this is one way to help deal with the problem on one front, it should be dealt with on other fronts too, such as teaching kids and teenagers in the proper ways of sexual etiquette, aka not going out and gang-raping innocent women.
India invented the goddamn Kama Sutra back in lost aeons, right? Well, have that eldritch tome of sexual knowledge be part of the national curriculum during high-school or something. Also, whilst we're on the subject, is pornography legal in India?
And now they'll just start stabbing any guy that randomly brushes against them.
Giving out weapons isn't a solution to this problem...
The knives are a little over the top, yes; lethality potential is a risk. Chemical sprays and foghorns should be the "standard issue" here; even if they get paranoid and/or "trigger-happy", they simply incapacitate and/or harm the target, without the risk of reasonable honourable dudes getting shanked due to knee-jerk paranoia.
Facepunch:
-Extended Magazine Rifles: Ok
-3 Inch Knives: Potential Menace to Society

Well yeah, but this is idea so it's not like the logical solution is actually possible.
Fixed that for you.
thank you very much for that, everything is so much better now I can finally sleep again
Good next time a rapist will bleed out instead of raping.

I don't mind people defending assault weapons and all that.
But how can you legally buy high powered explosives in the U.S. even without a permit?
Is blowing up gas tanks and tree stumps really that important?
Shiv Sena....
Oh man, these guys are a real piece of work. They constantly incite violence and harassment against things they generally don't like...valentine's day for example.

If we don't strike first, they will.

The gun control debate is going so strong it's overflowing into other threads.

Good America is finally starting wake up after 50 years.

Do you see the American government handing out assault weapons to fend off rapists??
Why is this even a relevant argument?
Guns are one thing, but if someone who REALLY wants to stab someone it's not going to be hard to find something to stab someone with regardless of whether several thousand kitchen knives are handed out.

"Don't be afraid of using this knife if someone attacks you," Ajay Chaudhari, running the knife campaign, was quoted by the party newspaper, Saamana, as saying.
They are handing out knives, with instructions to stab people if they feel threatened. That has a lot more weight than picking up some random sharp thing in the midst of a fight.
Put chili powder *on* the knives.
*Rubs hands together, chuckling malevolently.*
Those knives are going to do more harm to the defender than to the attacker.
It's ridiculous to think that the women would stab well meaning strangers out of a jerk reaction. It's insulting to think that people would be that irresponsible with a weapon. If you think these women become a paranoid harm to society simply because they come in contact with knives, your arrogance knows no bounds.
If they are so dangerously paranoid, then they already have a weapon. These knives are a symbol gesture to remind them to be prepared for an attack, nothing more.
The double standards in this thread are terrifyingly sad.
Or just completely unconscious sexism
oh god
what if they got the chili powder on your dick
oh god

Then you yell in pain, not raping the woman? Or you get enraged so you rape harder....
Good next time a rapist will bleed out instead of raping.
Or more than likely the girl will be understandably averse to shanking someone, and she'll get raped anyway and possibly shanked.

It's not just the face where it hurts
