christ why the fuck would you partner with goddamned GEARBOX? they've had nothing but a string of failures other than borderlands, are ethically questionable, and randy pitchford is a fucking joke what a mistake
I can't believe Randy Pitchford did another magic trick. He got people to put up $30 and made $60 disappear. How does he continue to do it?

This game is going to flop now that Randy has his hands on it
I really like the point that Jim brings up, about how We Happy Few is about resisting conformity and undermining an oppressive regime that enforces the status quo for no other reason than "that's the way it is", regardless of how much damage that status quo does. And then the developers of We Happy Few just happily conform to the AAA regime that enforces the status quo for no other reason than "that's the way it is", regardless of how much damage that status quo does. That's rather poetic. It's tragic, but poetic nevertheless.
This game is going to flop now that Randy has his hands on it
The game was going to flop anyway. People stop caring about it the moment they find out that it's a randomly generated permadeath survival crafting game.

They have an interesting story they could go off of. But nope fuck the story let's just make it a generic crafting survival game and just act like there is a story.

this kills the sales

It honestly feels like the writers and artists were on a completely separate team than the programmers and designers. And then when they finally came together, with the writers and artists showing off their Bioshock-esque story and assets, beaming with pride, the designers and programmers just kinda shuffled their feet and looked at each other awkwardly. What we have now as We Happy Few feels like the hastily duct-taped-together compromise that came out of such an embarrassing meeting.

I mean haha who would make a game about young boys and girls fighting against supernatural unknowns am I right that's such a mismatch. They belong in school!
It's a waste of a setting is his point.
A waste of a setting and so, so much more. It's a waste of a whole bloody world, full of lore, and story, and personality, and narrative. Again, it feels like the game designers and programmers were in a totally different reality than the writers and artists. If you can watch that trailer, and tell me that it gives you a hint, in any capacity, of the game being a generic survival-crafting game, and not a single-player social-commentary narrative like Bioshock, then frankly, I will call you, to your face, a dirty liar. I simply will not believe you.
The game was going to flop anyway. People stop caring about it the moment they find out that it's a randomly generated permadeath survival crafting game.
Just for story this would be a pretty good $10 (But only if the gameplay is alright) game, it explores some pretty cool ideas. I'd totally buy it for cheat engine hacking just to kinda see for myself what the plot is. like if anything is done right I'll put my money on plot being good... I massively hate permadeath and even well made survival games so I can't really judge it on that. But everything I hear about this tells me that if they manage to somehow fuck the plot up though this game is totally devoid of all meaning. [editline]22nd August 2017[/editline] I take the decent marketing the games had as a sign that this isn't a good game at all. It hasn't exactly been hyped up through game play trailers like you'll see with amazing games.
Well, at least you can completely disable the survival elements, but that won't get rid of the roguelike level structure.
I actually don't mind the concept, I think it makes sense that there are survival mechanics in it. It kinda fits the theme of being an outcast trying to oppose this society and therefore having to provide for themselves. I also get why people don't like it too but personally I like it, and the way the story and lore is told through the environment. Jim is absolutely right in the video though.
I think it makes sense that there are survival mechanics in it. It kinda fits the theme.
I think that's besides the point, though. As Gmod4ever said, people are going to buy this thinking it was inspired by Bioshock. Imagine if you followed the hype up to Bioshock and it turns out the combat and story took a backseat to those hacking puzzles. It fits the theme of bioshock to have plumbing puzzles, but that doesn't mean people are interested in that piece of media for a completely different reason than the mechanics imply. You're right, the games marketing didn't really reflect the meat of the game and a lot of people were mislead and still are. They messed up.
You're right, the games marketing didn't really reflect the meat of the game and a lot of people were mislead and still are. They messed up.
Wouldn't surprise me if it was intentional to be honest. They knew what they were making was going to enter an already over saturated market of survival games. So they wanted people to think it wasn't a survival game but more of a single player Bioshock experience so they could sell more copies.
