Nine Inch Nails (abbreviated as NIN) is an industrial rock band, founded in 1988 by Trent Reznor in Cleveland, Ohio. As its main producer, singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, Reznor is the only official member of Nine Inch Nails and remains solely responsible for its musical direction.[1] NIN's music straddles a wide range of genres, while retaining a characteristically intense sound using electronic instruments and processing. After recording a new album, Reznor usually assembles a live band to perform with him; this live component is a separate entity from Nine Inch Nails in the recording studio.[2][3] On stage, NIN often employs spectacular visual elements to accompany its performances, which frequently culminate with the band destroying musical instruments.[4]

On May 26, 2005, Reznor wrote "apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me" on the NIN website.[24] MTV replied that they respected Reznor's point of view, but were "uncomfortable" with the performance being "built around partisan political statements." A performance by the Foo Fighters replaced NIN's time slot on the show.
The ownership rights to Pretty Hate Machine were put on auction by TVT in 2005 at the behest of Prudential Securities bankruptcy proceedings. They offered the album as part of an overall package that included the rights to the Television's Greatest Hits compilations and the Mortal Kombat movie soundtracks. In addition, the highest bidder was offered a percentage of future sales in all of Nine Inch Nails' TVT-related releases. Rykodisc, who did not win the auction but were able to license the rights from Prudential, re-issued Pretty Hate Machine on November 22, 2005. Ryko also reissued the vinyl edition of the album and its "Head Like a Hole" CD single on January 31, 2006, and wanted to release a deluxe edition of the album (as Interscope had done for The Downward Spiral tenth anniversary) as well; however, Reznor was not willing to produce it without payment.
On October 24, 2006, after being alerted by a fan website, Reznor issued a cease and desist to Fox News for using three songs from The Fragile on air without permission. The songs ("La Mer", "The Great Below" and "The Mark Has Been Made") appeared in an episode of War Stories with Oliver North detailing the battle of Iwo Jima.[31] A post appeared on Reznor's blog, which read: "thanks for the Fox News heads-up. A cease and desist has been issued. FUCK Fox Fucking News."[32] Little else is known about the case.

NIN's music straddles a wide range of genres and techniques while retaining a characteristically intense sound. Underground music audiences warmly received the band's early activity, and Nine Inch Nails went on to produce several highly influential releases in the 1990s to international acclaim. Media coverage of NIN reached a peak in 1997, when Time magazine named Trent Reznor one of the 25 most influential people in America.
Early ambitions for Nine Inch Nails were modest: Reznor initially hoped to release one 12 inch single in Europe and then disband the group. At that time, Reznor was employed as a programmer (and janitor, as some sources have it). by Bart Koster, owner of Right Track Studios in Cleveland. Reznor asked to engineer some demo recordings of his own songs at night during unused studio time, free of charge; Koster agreed, remarking that it cost him "just a little wear on [his] tape heads." Several labels responded favorably to Reznor's material, and in what would prove a poor decision, he chose to sign with TVT Records. Nine selections from the Right Track demos, recorded circa 1988, were unofficially released in 1994 as Purest Feeling; Reznor completed five of these, dropped the others, and wrote several new songs to complete the first NIN album, Pretty Hate Machine.
While recording the earliest NIN tracks, Reznor was unable to find a band that could articulate his songs as he wanted and instead decided to play all the instruments himself. For the band's studio recordings, this role largely remains Reznor's, though he has involved other musicians and assistants. Nine Inch Nails first toured North America opening for alternative rock acts such as Peter Murphy and The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Reznor received a reputation for smashing instruments on stage out of frustration. This aggressive attitude won over NIN's earliest audiences, who were often openly confrontational towards synthesizer-based bands. NIN then supported Pretty Hate Machine with a world tour that continued through the first Lollapalooza festival in 1991, where the band "stole the show" from headliners Jane's Addiction despite numerous equipment problems. After receiving a disastrous European reception opening for Guns 'n Roses, NIN returned to America amidst pressure from TVT to produce a more commercial follow-up to Pretty Hate Machine; to avoid this, Reznor recorded in secret under assumed names.
Rumors have persisted about the origins of the name "Nine Inch Nails", one being that Reznor chose to reference the story of Jesus' crucifixion with nine inch long spikes. Others claimed that Reznor was inspired by the sight of nine inch fingernails on Freddy Krueger. Reznor asserts that he coined the name partly because it "abbreviated easily", rather than for "any literal meaning". Gary Talpas and Reznor designed the Nine Inch Nails logo that first appeared on NIN's debut, "Down in It" (which consists of the letters "NIN" set inside a border with the second "N" reversed), inspired by Tibor Kalman's typography on the Talking Heads album cover for Remain in Light. Talpas would continue to design NIN packaging art through the 1997 double VHS Closure.

Nine Inch Nails received considerable success in the mid-1990s, expanding their stature to that of arena rock performers and adding intensely theatrical visual elements to an already overwhelming live show. At the same time, Reznor's relentless studio perfectionism, struggles with addiction and bouts of writer's block tended to elongate the time between major NIN releases. This has served to increase fan anticipation for the band's next move during the wait between releases: in early 2005, David Bowie named Nine Inch Nails one of "the Immortals" in Rolling Stone's list of the one hundred greatest artists of all time, despite the band not having published any new music in several years. Inspired by late-1970s rock albums Low and The Wall, The Downward Spiral features a wide range of textures and moods that served to illustrate the mental progress of a central character. Widely regarded as NIN's most influential magnum opus, The Downward Spiral marked a high point for the band, which reached its widest ever mainstream audience with a mud-drenched performance at Woodstock '94, broadcast on Pay-Per-View and seen in as many as 24 million homes. Many bands cited Reznor as an influence after the release of The Downward Spiral, and though it was nominated in 1994 for the Best Alternative Music Performance Grammy award, it did not win. Reznor's appearance in Time magazine on the list of 1997's twenty-five most influential people solidified his status as "the most vital artist in music"; however, the end of NIN's first decade was characterized by a very long tour in support of The Downward Spiral followed by an even-longer period of relative silence.

Fans waited five years between The Downward Spiral and NIN's next major release, The Fragile. Reznor described the latter as being focused on "sound-scapes", in which "songwriting and arranging and production and sound design[...] became the same thing. A song would start with a drum loop or a visual and eventually a song would emerge out of it and that was the song." Dense in musical texture but lyrically sparse, Reznor initially considered organizing The Fragile such that one disc would contain songs and the other instrumentals. These plans changed when producer Bob Ezrin was consulted on the track-listing. The Fragile liner notes state "Bob Ezrin provided final continuity and flow," suggesting an arrangement of songs that would strengthen their overall cohesiveness and highlight "the 4 corners" of the album. In advance of the album's release, fans speculated that the song "Starfuckers, Inc." (nominated for a Best Metal Performance Grammy in 1999) was a parody of Reznor's former friend and protégé, Marilyn Manson. According to this view, the lyrics satirized Manson as being vain and insincere. Manson and Reznor soon put aside their differences: Manson co-directed and appeared in the music video for "Starsuckers, Inc." and performed the song alongside NIN at Madison Square Gardens in 2000.

In autumn 2005, Nine Inch Nails launched a North American arena tour supported by Queens of the Stone Age, as well as Autolux and Death from Above 1979. Other opening acts on this tour included Saul Williams (a hip-hop/spoken-word performer), and dance-rockers Moving Units. To conclude the With Teeth era of the band, NIN did a tour of US amphitheaters in the summer of 2006. Joining them were TV on the Radio (only for the first half of the tour, as Peaches and her band The Herms played on the latter half) and Bauhaus.
Corporate entanglements
Nine Inch Nails was involved in a much-publicized feud with TVT Records, the first record label to sign the band. Reznor successfully sued to leave the label, but not without begrudgingly allowing them a percentage of all his future songwriting royalties. In reaction to TVT's artistic meddling, Reznor began releasing NIN albums on his own Nothing Records imprint. Years later, Reznor sued his former friend and manager John Malm, Jr., co-founder of Nothing, for breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty. Their relationship was formally severed in a New York courtroom, with all claims awarded to Reznor (a sum in excess of three million dollars).
Nine Inch Nails dropped out of the 2005 MTV Movie Awards show because of a disagreement with the network over the use of an unaltered image of George W. Bush as a backdrop to the band's performance of "The Hand that Feeds", which includes such lyrics as:
What if this whole crusade's a charade
And behind it all there's a price to be paid
For the blood on which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine

On May 26, 2005, Reznor wrote "apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me" on the NIN website.[24] MTV replied that they respected Reznor's point of view, but were "uncomfortable" with the performance being "built around partisan political statements."
Nine Inch Nails has only issued five major albums of new and unique material. However, each of these is accompanied by numerous satellite releases, including remix albums, singles with extensive b-sides, and tour documentaries. Indeed, each primary release is seen as the center of an associated era, in which the secondary releases are vitally important to understanding the artistic whole. This is underscored by the use of halos, a sequential numbering system applied to every NIN release, which carries the implicit message that each is an equally-weighted component of the catalog, regardless of format. In addition to these releases, NIN has performed on numerous soundtracks and remixes of other artists
Halos numbers
Halo numbers are a system which orders official Nine Inch Nails releases. They correspond to the sequence in which the releases were made, and are named by the word halo which precedes the number on the release. For example, the fifth NIN release, Broken, is adorned with the phrase Halo Five. Halo numbers are sometimes modified for alternate versions of a release. Promotional-only releases do not have their own halo numbers, although the promotional singles for "Piggy" and "Hurt" were labeled as "Halo Ten," a title later officially used for Further Down the Spiral.
Purest Feeling: No Halo

Purest Feeling is a bootleg of the original demo version of Nine Inch Nails' debut album, Pretty Hate Machine, that was recorded at the Right Track Studio in November 1988 by Trent Reznor, whilst he was still working as a cleaner there. It was released as a CD in 1994 by Hawk Records.
Pretty Hate Machine: Halo_02 (Major Release)

NIN's first album Pretty Hate Machine debuted in 1989. It marked Reznor's first collaboration with Adrian Sherwood (who produced the lead single "Down in It" in London, England without having met Reznor face-to-face) and Mark "Flood" Ellis. Flood's production would appear on each major Nine Inch Nails release until 1994, and Sherwood has done remixes for the band as recently as 2000. Reznor and his co-producers expanded upon the Purest Feeling demos, and added future singles "Head Like a Hole" and "Sin". Rolling Stone's Michael Azerrad described the album as "industrial-strength noise over a pop framework" and "harrowing but catchy music"; Reznor proclaimed this combination "a sincere statement" of "what was in [his] head at the time". After spending 113 weeks on the Billboard 200, Pretty Hate Machine became one of the first independently released records to attain platinum certification. MTV aired videos for "Down in It" and "Head Like a Hole", but an explicit video for "Sin" was only released on the 1997 home video Closure.
Down In It single: Halo_01

"Down in It" is the first official Nine Inch Nails release and is a single from the album Pretty Hate Machine. Initially released only on vinyl, a CD version was later created after the success of the album. The first track on this single, "Down in It (skin)," is the mix that is found on Pretty Hate Machine. The cover art is very similar to Joy Division's first album, Unknown Pleasures. Joy Division has always been cited as an influence to Trent and he covered their song, "Dead Souls" on the soundtrack to The Crow.
Head Like a Hole: Halo_03

A music video was made for the "Clay" remix of this song. It was directed by Eric Zimmerman, released in March 1990 and later in 1997 on the Closure VHS. The video became popular on MTV and helped fuel NIN's early success. A slightly different edit of the video was also released for Flood's remix of the song. The video features band members Trent Reznor, Richard Patrick and Chris Vrenna along with guest drummer Martin Atkins performing in a cage.
Sin: Halo_04

"Sin" is the fourth official Nine Inch Nails release and the final single for the album Pretty Hate Machine. It contains three remixes of "Sin" from Pretty Hate Machine and Nine Inch Nails' first cover song. Even though the front has a stylized graphic that simply says "Sin" and it is generally referred to as "Sin" (including on the official NIN website), the spine of the US version refers to the album as "Sin Long, Dub & Short".
Broken: Halo_05 (Major Release)

Broken (also known as Halo 5) is an EP by Nine Inch Nails released in 1992. Broken is the fifth official Nine Inch Nails release. Although it is an EP, it is usually considered to be the band's second major release after Pretty Hate Machine since it consists entirely of new material. It was followed later in 1992 by Fixed, a companion EP of remixes of the songs on Broken.
The controversial Broken movie was made for the first 6 tracks (minus "Last"). It features the "Happiness in Slavery" music video, as well as the videos for "Pinion", "Wish", "Help Me I Am In Hell". There is also an alternate and more gruesome version of "Gave Up" at the very end, depicting a man being flogged, blowtorched, castrated with a razor and cut up with a chainsaw. The camera work in this video is similar to that of a snuff film, and it is widely regarded as drastically more violent than even the "Happiness in Slavery" music video. (Can be found in Media section)
Fixed: Halo_06

Fixed (also known as Halo 6) is a remix EP by Nine Inch Nails released in 1992. Fixed is the sixth official Nine Inch Nails release and is the companion remix disc to Broken.
March of the Pigs: Halo_07

"March of the Pigs" has one of the most unusual metres of any song to enjoy popular radio play, alternating three bars of 7/8 time with one bar of 4/4 time (in effect, a 29/8 time signature). The song has a BPM rate of 269.
A music video was made for this song, directed by Peter Christopherson and released in March 1994. The video features the band performing the song live in front of a white wall backdrop. This video was the last video to be played on MTV2's Increase the Beat, on Memorial Day weekend 2002. At 269 BPM, it had the fastest tempo of the 400+ videos that were played that weekend.
The Downward Spiral: Halo_08 (Major Release)

(also known as Halo 8) is an LP by Nine Inch Nails (NIN), released in 1994. It is the eighth official Nine Inch Nails halo release and the band's third major release.
The album's success propelled NIN into the public consciousness, especially after the release of its popular second single, "Closer", which was accompanied by a controversial video directed by Mark Romanek. Some critics have stated that this album demonstrates a maturation of Trent Reznor's pop music sensibility, and credit his ability to blend it with taboo themes (as seen in the catchy "Closer"). The album served as basis for a remix album entitled Further Down the Spiral, released in 1995. It was ranked 25 in Spin's "100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005". It was ranked #488 in the book 'The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time' by Martin Popoff. In 2001 Q magazine named The Downward Spiral as one of the 50 Heaviest Albums Of All Time.[1] In 2003, the album was ranked number 200 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
Closer to God: Halo_09

"Closer to God" (also known as Halo 9) is a single by Nine Inch Nails released in 1994 for the song "Closer" from the album The Downward Spiral.
The Song:"Closer" is arguably Nine Inch Nails' most well-known song. The chorus features the line "I wanna fuck you like an animal," with the profanity censored for radio airplay despite its prominent placement in the song.
The song exemplifies Trent Reznor's affinity for dissonance, with a four-note synthesizer riff featuring an augmented interval after the first chorus. It ends with a heavily chromatic piano motif, the same that recurs in the climax of the title track, suggesting that the lyrics should be interpreted beyond their literal meaning.
QUAKE Soundtrack: No Halo

This is based on the PC version of the game. The soundtrack was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails.
There are in fact no official names to these tracks. They are usually referred to either by the level they are initially played to, or by one of two fan created track listings. They can also be referred to by their track number, however, the first audio track being placed on the CD's second track (the first being reserved for the actual game data), this usually leads to confusion.
The sound effects and music for the game were composed by Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails (within the game, the ammo box for the nailgun has the Nine Inch Nails logo on it in reference to this).
Further Down The Spiral: Halo_10

Further Down the Spiral (US version also known as Halo 10 and UK version also known as Halo 10v2) is an EP by Nine Inch Nails released in 1995. Further Down the Spiral is the tenth official Nine Inch Nails release and is the companion remix disc to The Downward Spiral.
It has become one of the most popular remix discs ever released by Nine Inch Nails and was certified gold, June 26th, 1996, for sales in excess of 500,000 copies in the US alone. It showed a more varied and experimental point of view to the original and boasted many high profile contributors/remixers including Aphex Twin, J. G. Thirlwell, Dave Navarro, and Coil.
The Perfect Drug (Versions): Halo_11

"The Perfect Drug" is a 1997 song by Nine Inch Nails. It was written for the David Lynch film Lost Highway and originally appeared on the Lost Highway soundtrack. Remixes of the song were released in an EP, "The Perfect Drug" Versions (also known as Halo 11).
Though "The Perfect Drug" Versions acts as a single for the titular song, the original version of the song only appears on the European, Australian and Japanese releases of the single. "The Perfect Drug" has also been included on the later singles "We're in This Together" and "Into the Void", although the only audio release of it in North America has been on the Lost Highway soundtrack
Closure DVD/VHS: Halo_12

Closure (also known as Halo 12) is a double VHS set by Nine Inch Nails released in 1997. Closure is the twelfth official Nine Inch Nails release. It consists of one tape of live concert and behind-the-scenes footage from the "Self Destruct" tour and one tape of music videos.
In August 2004, Trent Reznor announced a DVD version of Closure, long requested and anticipated by fans, which was to be released in late 2004. It contains over 90 minutes of additional footage compared to the prior VHS release. A teaser trailer shown on the NIN website included new footage from the 1989 tour, Lollapalooza, Woodstock '94, clips from the making of the "Closer" and "The Perfect Drug" videos, and the unreleased, original versions of the "March of the Pigs" and "Hurt" videos. The deluxe two-disc DVD set, though finished and ready for authoring and release, has been indefinitely postponed by Interscope Records.

The Day The World Went Away: Halo_13

The Day the World Went Away" (also known as Halo 13) is a single by Nine Inch Nails for the song of the same name released in 1999. It is the thirteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and was a teaser single for the album The Fragile.
"The Day the World Went Away" consists of a droning background noise overlapped with layers of distorted guitars, a middle section with lyrics sung over the droning and a mandolin at the end, and then a return to the harsh guitars with a chanting chorus. The song is distinctive in the band's history due to its lack of any drums or percussion.
The Fragile: Halo_14 (Major Release)

The Fragile (also known as Halo Fourteen) is a double album by Nine Inch Nails released in 1999. The Fragile is the fourteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and the band's fourth major release. It was preceded by The Downward Spiral and is followed by With Teeth. It is the first album to feature the NIN logo on the cover.
Reznor described The Fragile in a 1999 interview:
“ "There's a general theme to the album of systems failing and things sort of falling apart. In keeping with the idea of making everything sound a little broken, I chose stringed instruments because they're imperfect by nature. Although it may not sound like it, most of the album is actually guitar - and that includes the orchestral sounds and weird melodic lines. When it came to instruments that I didn't really know how to play - like the ukulele or the slide guitar - we were able to get some really interesting sounds by making the studio the main instrument." ”
Narratively speaking, the album is an unofficial continuation of The Downward Spiral. Here, Reznor compares the lyrical content of the two albums:
“ “I wanted this album to sound like there was something inherently flawed in the situation, like someone struggling to put the pieces together. Downward Spiral was about peeling off layers and arriving at a naked, ugly end. This album starts at the end, then attempts to create order from chaos, but never reaches the goal. It’s probably a bleaker album because it arrives back where it starts—[with] the same emotion.” The album begins “Somewhat Damaged” and ends “Ripe [With Decay].
We're In This Together: Halo_15

"We're in This Together" (also known as Halo 15) is a 3-disc single by Nine Inch Nails for the song of the same name released in 1999. It is the fifteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and is a single for the album The Fragile.
The lyrics are inspired by David Bowie's song "Heroes", such as with the line "You're the queen and I'm the king", describing two people trying to make it against an ominous and seemingly unstoppable force. David Bowie is given a special thanks credit in the liner notes of The Fragile.
The song was never played live until the Year Zero tour. It debuted on February 11, 2007 in Lisbon, Portugal, and was played on three other concerts during the European Tour.
Things Falling Apart: Halo_16

Things Falling Apart (also known as Halo 16) is an album by Nine Inch Nails released in 2000. Things Falling Apart is the sixteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and is the companion remix disc to The Fragile. The unofficial U.S. promo CD for Into the Void is also labeled as Halo 16.
Live: And All That Could Have Been: Halo_17 (Major Release)

And All That Could Have Been is the seventeenth official Nine Inch Nails release. The live album contains music recorded during the Fragility 2.0 US tour in 2000; a limited edition set added a second disc titled Still containing "deconstructed" versions of previous NIN songs and some new material. The double DVD set, sold separately, has video recordings of the songs performed on the CD, as well as additional song performances and footage from the Fragility 2.0 tour.

"The Hand That Feeds" (also known as Halo 18) is a single by Nine Inch Nails for the song of the same name. "The Hand That Feeds"' is the eighteenth official Nine Inch Nails release and was a teaser single for the album With Teeth. It is the highest charting song by Nine Inch Nails on all charts except for U.S. Modern Rock Tracks, because the single that followed, "Only", stayed at number one for three more weeks.
With_Teeth: Halo_19 (Major Release)

With Teeth was released as a standard CD, double vinyl, a DualDisc and a CD/DVD combo. In addition to 5.1 surround and stereo mixes of the songs, the DualDisc (and DVD) contain the video for "The Hand That Feeds", an interactive discography and a slide show of album artwork.
Only Single: Halo_20

Beside You in Time (also known as Halo 22) is a live video release by Nine Inch Nails, issued in Europe on February 26, 2007, and the US on February 27, 2007. "Beside You in Time" is also the title of a track on the NIN album With Teeth. The video documents NIN's 2006 "Live: With Teeth" tour, and is available on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray formats (with no official CD release). An edited version of the video aired on DirecTV's "The 101" in March 2007.

Not released by NIN but I'm just adding it, I ripped it from the DVD and created a RAR of it. You can download it from the free media section.
Survivalism Single: Halo_23

"Survivalism" (also known as Halo 23) is the first single by Nine Inch Nails from their 2007 album Year Zero. The song is the third track on the album. The single was released digitally on the iTunes Store on March 13, 2007, and the CD and vinyl singles were released internationally on April 2, 2007.[1]
On February 14, 2007, a clip of the chorus to "Survivalism" was first heard by fans calling the telephone number 1-310-295-1040, which was found by joining discolored numerals on the back of a tour t-shirt.[2] FMQB reported that "Survivalism" would arrive at radio stations on February 27 with an add date of March 6,[3] but 102.1 The Edge in Toronto, Canada debuted the song on February 15, and on the next day, it was officially played on radio stations across the United States. It was later made available on Nine Inch Nails' MySpace page.
Year Zero: Halo_24 (Major Release)

Year Zero (also known as Halo 24) is the sixth Nine Inch Nails studio album, released on April 16, 2007 in Europe, April 17 in the United States, and April 25, 2007 in Japan.[1] Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor produced it with engineer Atticus Ross; longtime collaborator Alan Moulder mixed the album (both worked in a similar capacity on NIN's previous major studio album, With Teeth) and Brian Gardner mastered it.[3]
Year Zero is a concept album criticizing the United States government's policies as of 2007,[4] projecting a dystopian vision of its impact on the state of events in 2022. Reznor indicated that this required a completely different approach from his usual style of lyric writing. Reznor has also said that Year Zero is "part of a bigger picture of a number of things [he is] working on". This includes a remix album, an alternate reality game, and a television series that is currently being negotiated with television networks.

Several judges took countless hours to review each of the 200 mixes and came up with a list of 21 "best of the best" remixes to be featured on the site. Taking home the 1st place Hot Topic prize package is Dirty Scarab for his version of My Violent Heart (Prevention; Rejection). The 2nd place runner-up Faction package goes to the version of Vessel (Losing Control Remix) by Pushing Reality. Congratulations to both prize package winners for creating exceptional remixes and also to the 19 other winners that are featured here today for creating quality remixes.

Nine Inch Nails, the second from their 2007 album Year Zero. It is the seventh track on the album. A promo CD was released on April 2, 2007, and What Records stated the single and was released on June 11 on vinyl. As of May 2007, Trent Reznor has no plans of releasing the single in CD format.
The song was first played on radio on April 4, 2007. As of April 27, 2007, "Capital G" is listed on the Mediabase Jump! and Taking Off charts, which record the track's increase in radio airplay over 7 days. Ghosts I-IV: Halo_26 (Major Release)

Ghosts I–IV (also known as Halo 26) is the seventh studio album by Nine Inch Nails and was released on March 2, 2008. The album contains 36 instrumental tracks and was recorded in ten weeks of autumn 2007. It is the first album from Nine Inch Nails following its announcement to sever its ties with its Interscope Records and release material independently. Initially intended to be a five-track EP, the album is presented in the form of four nine-track instrumental EPs. The tracks do not have names, and are only identified by their track listing, position, and album art. The team behind the project included Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Alan Moulder, with instrumental contributions from Alessandro Cortini, Adrian Belew, and Brian Viglione.
The album was released under a Creative Commons license, and in a variety of different packages at different price points, including a US $300 "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition". The album was initially released digitally on the Nine Inch Nails official website, without any prior advertisement or promotion. Via the official Nine Inch Nails YouTube profile, a user-generated "film festival" was announced, where fans were invited to visually interpret the album and post the results.
The Slip: Halo_27 (Major Release)

Before the release, a single, "Discipline" was released freely on the official Nine Inch Nails site, and another song, "Echoplex", was released for free download from iLike . The ID3 tags of these MP3 files indicated that fans should visit the Nine Inch Nails website on May 5, 2008, where a free direct download link to the album in MP3 format, as well as torrents for lossless audio formats were posted. A message posted on the Nine Inch Nails website read:
"thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me"
The Slip was released online on May 5, 2008 on the official Nine Inch Nails website. Like the previous Nine Inch Nails studio album Ghosts I–IV, The Slip is licensed under a Creative Commons attribution-noncommercial share alike license, in effect allowing anyone to use or rework the material for any non-commercial purpose, as long as credit is provided and the resulting work is released under an identical license. The website further expands
"we encourage you to remix it, share it with your friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers, etc."
Subsequently, social news aggregation websites, such as Digg featured news of the album's release as a front page story. As with Ghosts I–IV and Year Zero, multi-track audio source files of the album were also made available at remix.nin.com

Year Zero is NIN's 5th album. Prior to it's release, NIN decided to mix it up a bit by launching a viral marketing campaign.
I'm going to be talking about the Alternate Reality/Viral Marketing as I find this to be the most interesting way that NIN have campaigned so far.
The campaign started on February 12th 2007 with 3 events.
These events were;
• Another Version Of The Truth
• I Am Trying To Believe
(And a combination of these events and more created)
• The Numbers

At a NIN concert in Portugal, a USB drive was found in the womens toilets.
On this USB drive was a single .mp3 titled "My Violent Heart".
In the ID3 tags of this file featured the following website;
http://anotherversionofthetruth.com
It can also be noted that on the "Another Version Of The Truth" page of the Year Zero liner notes, the figures "HTTP://" can be made out through the
over-typed effect of the text in the booklet, hinting at the website.
I was originally going to post pictures of the website etc.
Instead though, I'll let y'all browse through it yourselves!
As you can see, the dates of the posts etc. are all "0000", aka, Year Zero.
The thing that strikes as odd, is that the 0's for the month of each date are wider than the rest, as well as a date mismatch between the text and the
background image, as if to hint that it's been altered.
What the forums seem to be about;
End of the World?
The discussion in this forum centers around The Presence and what it may be, if it in fact exists. It also contains, in a post, song lyrics: "Used to be the
leader/ now comes the time to serve/ maybe we show some mercy/ maybe you get what you deserve." The lyrics are from the Year Zero song Meet Your Master.
Acts of Resistance
This forum mainly discusses an act of terrorism at a baseball game that is alluded to by a poster named BeTheHammer. It is assumed that this poster is the
same as the author of the Be the Hammer website, which he links to.
Cops Murder Muslim Kid
This forum only has two posts, but does link to an MP3, nohurry.mp3, in which a media report is contrasted with a cell phone recording of what is revealed to
be a police murder.
Violent Resistance
This forum centers around the debate which started in the "Acts of Resistance" forum over whether violence is useful in resisting the authority. It also
contains a linked MP3, ballgameOver.mp3, in which an assassin, most likely BeTheHammer, talks about organizing the attack as it happens.
Opal/Cocaine
This forum begins with a link to another MP3, opalo.mp3, which contrasts a media report about the Colombian drug trade and a firsthand account from a
Colombian woman, indicating that cocaine's downfall is due to global warming and opal. It should be noted that the woman speaking in Spanish does not have a
Colombian accent, but it is an accent originated on or influenced by Mexican or Central American accents. This confusion is commonly observed in American
films. It has not been clarified if this contradiction is intentional and meaningful or if it would be, otherwise, only due to a mistake during production.
In Memoriam
This forum has only one post, a notice to other forum members that the poster's brother was killed and the circumstances surrounding it.
Missing in Action
This forum lists the names of people who have gone missing, and one post from "Shatter36" indicating he or she is fine; the implication being he or she is
one of the people named as missing above.
The list of screennames on these forums is as follows: 8ballz, angelfood, AVT001, AVT019, AVT021, AVT80, AVT092, AVT666, Barnlikr (quoted), BeTheHammer,
Che2, ChicagoAnon, fairisfair, Fiddler5Weather, giventake, Gradiosity, GrogeousGeorge, guiltfree, Haberdasher, HumanInterest, kidwithacam, KingdomCome,
Lenguetaindia lovemonger, McLuhanDisciple, mitzvah, musiclover06, PaxHarmonica, pharlarope (quoted), Phil&Sophie (unsure about &), romeisburning, Shatter36,
ShiHuang, Sunset Clause, ticktock9, Victor12, VoxIsMyCowboy
The last entry on any of the forums is 2/10/00 at 14:26, however, there appears to be evidence that dates were changed.
Art is Resistance
http://anotherversionofthetruth.com/artist.htm
[img]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/AIR_flier.jpg/img]
The Art Is Resistance website has a link to an archived thread, entitled "Artist Behind AIR Goes Missing". The thread mainly discusses the usefulness of art
(as opposed to violence) as a tool for resistance.
In this thread one of the posters is named BanksyForDictator, which is a note-worthy allusion to the underground icon amongst stencil & graffiti artists
worldwide. Art is an invaluable tool of the counter culture, & though many of his masterpieces are fun and light-hearted Banksy is a real world example of
art's amazing power to transfer ideas and messages to those who would otherwise remain unaware. For more information on Banksy see
www.banksy.co.uk.
Another important point made is by Philomela: "It makes it easy for you to think that the cops and the bankers and the soldiers are all Them. They aren’t.
They’re us, too." The meaning behind this quote shows that despite a corporations & institutions being symbols of the enemy, the individuals within are not
all necessarily enemies, but some maybe victims of circumstance.
Year Zero Calendar
In Year Zero, the calendar has been altered from the traditional BCE-AD structure. The years following Year Zero are denotated as "0000". When referring to
the past, the years are subtracted from the date of the calendrical reconstruction. Example: Thirteen years prior to 0000 is listed as "-13 BA," or "Born
Again". It is now proven that Year Zero itself is actually the year 2022, as indicated by the image located here Thus the year 2008 is actually -14 BA.
Revisionism

One of the more interesting pages featured here, working out the puzzle allows you to read about the bleak future that America has caused for the rest of the
world.
0 Pages

Another little game, this one forces you to work out how to get to the next page.
Every few pages there are instructions on how to make a bomb out of a computer.
I'll get you started so that you's understand how this one works.
See how 'work' is blue, and so is the clue down the bottom?
What is the opposite of work?

After the NIN tour in Portugal, fans noticed a particular Tour T-Shirt, unlike the rest of the shirts, this one had highlighted letters.

Upon piecing together the letters, you're presented with the message;
"I Am Trying To Believe"
Now, if you go to;
http://iamtryingtobelieve.com
You're presented with a website talking about 'Parepin'.
This is when it becomes clear in regards to the relation of the 2 events.
Upon reading this site, you learn that 'Parepin' is a drug that America released into it's drinking water supplies.
It's said that it was to strengthen immune systems as we've entered an era of Biological Warfare. The true intentions however, remain to be seen. What it
has done however, has affected peoples state of mind - causing people to see "The Presence", states of paranoia etc.
Below is a message from someone who stopped drinking the water;
I was already an adult when Parepin was first introduced into the water supply. During

because everything seems more important. More urgent. Problems are more
frightening. happiness is more vivid. I just feel more...present.
Most of all, my mind is working again. I’m starting to think about a lot of
the problems our country is facing, and how we got here. The Administration would tell
you I’m suffering from paraI don’t think
I’m paranoid. I just feel awake.

The Presence is a figure resembling a hand coming down from the sky.
It's what is featured on the Album Cover of Year Zero, but it also shown throughout the alternate reality.
In the world of Year Zero, The Presence is a ghostly arm reaching down from the sky. It was initially thought to be drug-related hallucination, but this was
debunked by people who claim to have seen or been affected by The Presence, but who are not under the effects of Opal or Parepin. It has been suggested,
however, that use of Opal or Parepin may intensify or increase the frequency of these encounters. People who have been affected by The Presence have
described feelings of intense fear, insignificance, astonishment, and forgetfulness.
Gradiosity describes his interaction with The Presence:
A buddy and I were getting our asses kicked by a couple cops after they caught us tagging a wall. I remember hearing this crack like thunder right
overhead. Next thing I knew, we were all standing there, looking up like baby birds. One of the cops was crying. We were all shaking. It was like realizing
I’ve spent my whole life underwater and finally looking up and seeing *real* life on the other side of the surface. The cops just left us, just forgot about
us. But we didn’t notice because we’d forgotten about them.
The song "The Warning" seems to be speaking directly about "The Presence"
Some say it was a warning
Some say it's a sign
I was standing right there
When it came down from the sky
The way it spoke to us
You felt it from inside
Said it was up to us
Up to us to decide
"You've become a virus
Killing off his host
We been watching you with all of our eyes
And what you seem to value most
So much potential
Or so we used to say
Your greed, self-importance and your arrogance
You piss it all away
We heard her cry
We have come to intervene
You will change your ways and you will make amends
Or we will wipe this place clean"
Your time is ticking away
Another song that makes reference is "The Wretched", an older song that was on 'The Fragile' album.
The lyrics;
The clouds will part and the sky cracks open
And god himself will reach his fucking arm through
Just to push you down
Just to hold you down
Are said to relate to The Presence
Also, if you play the song "My Violent Heart" through a spectrometer, the following is seen at the end of the song;

From certain parts of the websites above, numbers are formed.
The numbers follow a format of "24.x.y".
They apparently represent evidence that is to be used against a person known only as [CLASSIFIED].
The first few numbers can be seen at places we've already visited.
24.10.8: http://anotherversionofthetruth.com
Now that you're here again, press CTRL + A.
24.13.1: Upon reading through 'Another Version Of The Truth', you will come across the faction A.I.R (Art Is Resistance).
When you go to http://artisresistance.com, clicking any link will bring up a warning message, in this warning message are the numbers 24.13.1.
24.14.1: On the T-Shirt featured above for "I Am Trying To Believe", there the numbers 24.14.1 can be seen at the very bottom.
24.14.2: One of the more subtle numbers to be found.
Remember the message from "I Am Trying To Believe"?

Note the dashes/underscore in the AUTO RESPONSE section.
It goes as follows;
24 dashes, then the AUTO_RESPONSE, then 14 dashes, underscore, 2 dashes.
24.14.2.
There are many more numbers, some have been found via Morse Code in NIN songs, .mp3's that have been featured on the various sites etc.
No one is sure what they mean yet, but it will all become clear.

Now, I could continue for hours on end about this saga, as I've covered 3-4 of what ended up being ~30 parts to this Alternate Reality.
I will say this though - there is a lot more to the links I've shown than what I've explained.
Explore.

Into the Void

"Into the Void" was released as a single only in Australia. This Australian release does not have a halo number, making it the only commercially-available Nine Inch Nails release with that distinction. However, a two-track promotional CD for "Into the Void", released only in the United States, was identified as Halo Sixteen. The version of "The Perfect Drug" included on this single is slightly longer than the one released on the Lost Highway soundtrack. It fades out at the end instead of ending abruptly.

"Starfuckers, Inc." is the fourth single for the double album The Fragile by Nine Inch Nails. Although the song does not have an official halo, a promotional CD titled "Starsuckers, Inc."' was distributed with exclusive radio edits, and a video for "Starsuckers, Inc." was produced.
No download available that I can find.

Slip didn't even feel like an album. It felt like a bunch of mediocre songs thrown together. I'm not really a fan of Year Zero either, except for a few songs. I absolutely love everything up till Fragile, too.
[editline]03:06AM[/editline]
I consider The Downward Spiral and Broken masterpieces.
[editline]03:06AM[/editline]
Also, anyone who likes NIN should check out Skinny Puppy. Okay, I'm done now.
Nine Inch Nails is my favorite :4chan:
photek remix of a nin song? lol nice

Indeed, Skinny Puppy is a great band, far superior in most, if not all ways.
The Fragile is probably Trents best record, it's my favourite at least.
Yeah when I came on today and saw the notice saying threads will auto-lock I was like "Oh shi-" and went to back up the thread.
The music in The Fragile is great, but I have to admit the lyrics are pretty bad on it sometimes. My favourite NIN record is probably The Downward Spiral.

The Fragile has amazing lyrics. That entire album is near-perfect.
Yeah I don't know what he's talking about.
I just don't like the lyrics. some of it is pretty predictable, but like I said the music is great and it's probably my second or third favourite album by them.

I highly disagree, I loved The Slip, and Year Zero is my favorite NIN album.
But opinions are opinions.
You guys like NIN right?
Well I'll just leave this here. :keke:
remix.nin.com <-- Run by Trent, so it's legit.
Besides the occasional 'smell of sunshine' the Fragile is pretty great, lyrically and especially musically. It's probably my favorite NIN album as well.
The Slip is a great album to listen to every once in a while when you just need to kill an hour or so, and Year Zero is pretty nice. I'll admit I liked the old stuff better, but the new stuff isn't terrible at all.
Opinions everywhere oh god
If any of you have a ipod touch/iphone, Get the NIN app. You get access to every NIN studio recording every made, access to remixes by Trent and by users. And its free.
I sound like an advertiser, but the app is that damn good.

Closer is a horrible song and I cringe whenever it's played on the radio or when someone mentions it.
Although, Closer (Precursor) is amazing.
