Roughly 38,000 correction officers at federal lockups across the country are required to keep working during the government shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The government shutdown has turned federal prisons upside down — the guards are required to work without pay while the inmates collect their checks. Justice Department policy stipulates that thousands of hardened criminals with jobs making everything from furniture to clothes to license plates for Federal Prison Industries will keep getting paid during the spending stalemate. The roughly 38,000 correction officers at federal lockups across the country aren’t so lucky. The correction officers and other prison employees were designated as “essential” and required to keep working without pay.
http://nypost.com/2013/10/11/federal-prisoners-get-checks-as-correction-officers-go-unpaid-due-to-shutdown/
If they don't keep them in jail, who will?
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
also you're kind of completely stripped of your freedom so that's also a bit of a downer for any potential federal inmates out there
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
Wow
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
I don't think they do it for just the money. They probably do it just to do something.
That's going to raise morale like nobody's business.
I don't think they do it for just the money. They probably do it just to do something.
Exactly. My grandma was just telling me that her nephew is in jail for DUI related things and he's working at an auto garage to pass the time and learn and help fix peoples cars. Apparently that's what he did in the real world, which is nice enough. [editline]13th October 2013[/editline]
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
However, the problem here is that federal correctional officers aren't getting paid.
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
it's slave labor pure and simple.
18 cents an hour is still a lot for paying society back :v:
But the Justice Department’s shutdown plan provided for Federal Prison Industries to keep paying inmates because it receives multiyear funding, not the annual spending bills passed by Congress.
Sounds like this isn't the government flipping them the bird, just an unfortunate difference in budgeting.
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
Heh, I didn't even know that inmates did work still.
Heh, I didn't even know that inmates did work still.
100% of the US military's helmets are manufactured by domestic convict labor. In some areas, refusing to work nets you solitary. Legitimized slavery, yo.
100% of the US military's helmets are manufactured by domestic convict labor. In some areas, refusing to work nets you solitary. Legitimized slavery, yo.
kick ass
100% of the US military's helmets are manufactured by domestic convict labor. In some areas, refusing to work nets you solitary. Legitimized slavery, yo.
I wonder how much economical damage a nationwide convict's strike would do
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
The principle of the matter still stings.
What if they just quit? I know it's not an option for a lot of them, but neither is working for free. Most people can't survive two months with no income in our glorified debt society. I mean, with no guards or severe under staffing problems could arise. Are they like not allowed to quit either?
I wonder how much economical damage a nationwide convict's strike would do
None because they'll get broken up because they're starting a riot.
This just in the US prison system is pure unshaved sweaty balls More shocking news coming your way
Even though they're not getting paid now, having a job for the federal government is faaaar better than most jobs out there, especially with benefits and such.
Yeah I just meant what if the shutdown continues for a while, at some point people are going to need money coming in, they may have to leave that job and find another. I know it's unlikely for this to happen in a large enough scale to disrupt the prison system nationally, but locally it could happen.
I'm just wondering how they hell they're gonna make due if this doesn't end soon. Anyone with rent or home payments is going to lose their place of residence. Especially home payments. Landlords might understand, banks will not give a shit though. I wonder how many lives are going to be ruined before this ends. Hell I wonder if right now, there are homeless federal employees living at the bus station outside their workplace because they couldn't pay for their homes.
Before anyone bitches, keep in mind that the average wage for federal inmates is fucking 18 cents an hour.
I don't really think inmates are concerned about how they're being paid because it seems far better than sitting in a cell all day doing nothing [editline]14th October 2013[/editline] same shit happens in Australia many jails do these work like things with prisoners where they get experience and a little bit of money in their pocket
I don't see the difference. Most of those convicts probably never get paid anyways.
it's slave labor pure and simple.
But I don't think it's compulsory for them to do it, they choose to do it so they have something to do.
But I don't think it's compulsory for them to do it, they choose to do it so they have something to do.
so you create an environment where the only tolerable action is to work for (literally) pennies an hour. sounds like slavery to me.
so you create an environment where the only tolerable action is to work for (literally) pennies an hour. sounds like slavery to me.
It's prison, not a fuckin' vacation.
It's prison, not a fuckin' vacation.
this fucking argument is fucking stupid, yeah okay they committed a crime whether it was rape, murder, sexual assault, drugs whatever the fuck nobody cares but they are still humans and they must be treated as humans and not rodents otherwise we'd have a North Korea/Gulag ordeal and nobody and I mean nobody wants that The basic fundamentals of human rights stay with you until you take your last breath, they never go away
Prisoners getting paid in prison is at the very bottom of my give-a-shit list. Feed them, Don't beat them. And give them fresh hay to lay on once a month. Much more concerned with the staff. Who is going to take Mr. Pedo-Bank-Robber for a walk in the sun if the guards decide to say fuck it and get another job?
