2:45 p.m.: St. Louis Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a police officer in north St. Louis approximately four miles from Ferguson and less than three miles from where Michael Brown was killed.
Police Chief Sam Dotson tweeted that the "suspect brandished a knife at officers." The suspect is dead, and no officers were injured.
3:05 p.m. ET: St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the suspect, a 23-year-old African-American male, had been involved in a convenience store theft early Tuesday afternoon and was seen acting eratically. When two officers stopped him, the suspect shouted, "Shoot me! Kill me now!" The suspect refused verbal commands to stop and approached the officers holding a knife in an "overhand grip," getting within three or four feet of them, police said. Both officers fired at the suspect, killing him.
"Every police officer out here has the right to defend themselves," Dotson told reporters.
Well this will only make a bad situation worse
Suicide by cop?
Suicide by cop?
That's what I was thinking. I suppose the verdict is still out on whether or not he was actually brandishing a knife, but otherwise it seems pretty cut and dry.
well this is a clusterfuck.
Suicide by cop?
Sounds more like someone trying to rile more crap up.

By making himself a martyr? Unlikely.
Odds are, he was taunting the cops and possibly didn't expect them to actually follow through.
Suicide by cop?
If that's the case then it's either some fucking timing on his part, or he saw himself as a martyr standing up to the cops.
Woo, ready to upgrade from shit storm to shit deluge?

that's the risk you can take when yelling at the cops to shoot you
particularly when brandishing a knife
As if things weren't already bad enough.
Suicide by police is such a dick move, whoever shot him will have to live with the fact that they've killed someone.

I'd place my bets on the latter, but the former is a possibility.
Either way the killing of the guy seems like a waste of a life. Why not pacify him using a stun gun? Surely we (modern human kind) got the tech that would do the job efficiently. I'd say the same for all modern incidents like this. I'm sure the money is there for the equipment too, right?

I agree, especially since he was literally bring a knife to a gun fight.

Too bad that same human intelligence can't simply prevent idiots not putting themselves in this situation to begin with.

A waste of life? Is it not a good thing that idiots just like this guy are removed from the gene pool?

either way the guy who got shot is still an idiot.
A waste of life? Is it not a good thing that idiots just like this guy are removed from the gene pool?
Oh. You know if he had children or not?

Why your post is stupid:
Eugenics is a crime against humanity.
Intelligence is not genetically passed on.
What if he already had kids, which is irrelevant due to the two above points.
Y'know, there's a lot of drama over Mike Brown's shooting, but this one is pretty cut and dry. He was robbing a store, brandishing a knife, in an extremely chaotic area, he should've known what was coming. This is really entirely justified.
And before anyone gets bitchy about "But he had a knife and they had guns, they didn't need to shoot him!":
The suspect refused verbal commands to stop and approached the officers holding a knife in an "overhand grip," getting within three or four feet of them, police said. Both officers fired at the suspect, killing him.
Within 3 to 4 feet from them, wielding a knife, apparent intent to harm you? Absolutely justified.

But will local residents see it that way? That's the bigger problem.
But will local residents see it that way? That's the bigger problem.
Not sure if things can get any worse than they already are, I'm pretty sure people have already started getting the fuck away from Ferguson.
But will local residents see it that way? That's the bigger problem.
The local residents don't really seem to care about Mike Brown anymore, more just causing havoc and drama. I doubt they'd believe it was justified even if they saw this guy start gutting an officer.

You just invoked Murphy's Law.
It can always get worse.
--Snip, very dumb, uneducated question.
Any sensible human would leave ferguson ASAP.
Bit overkill for a guy holding a knife, no? I thought armed force was meant to disable, not kill. If both cops shot at the same time--at someone with a knife, no less--then that's hardly a justified level of defense.
I understand that a weapon is a weapon--and that cops aren't supposed to distinguish between a knife, and a gun--but you can't say that both of them firing at him simultaneously wasn't overkill given the circumstances. Sure, he was a threat. It's not as though he wasn't trying to evoke a response, and I'm not questioning their decision to use force--but it seems like their response should've been less lethal than both cops shooting him at almost point-blank range.
Armed force is intended to either stop the person with the threat of death, or kill him. You shoot to kill, never to injure. The only time you stop shooting is when the threat is clearly removed, either when he's dead, or too injured to attack you.
I would argue that them shooting him at point-blank is more justified then if he was at long range, really. Close range with a knife is kill range.

He's within 3-4 feet brandishing a knife, they have every right to shoot the fuck out of him. They're not going to sit there going "Am I going to shoot him or you" and they're certainly not going to let the other get stabbed by some crazy asshole. Ask yourself: You have a gun, and someone is right in your face with a knife. Are you going to shoot him down or try to use ~nonlethal force~?
These are people and they have every right to defend their lives.

I'm almost certain that a cop is only supposed to shoot to kill, never just to injure.
