Sorry people, no actual news, but only a video. I will try finding a source now. And shit still rages on there even after the famous operation Irene.
Somalia's President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is on the front line, as fierce battles rage on the day the country marks 50 years of independence. Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the president was dressed in military fatigues atop an African Union tank. The president warned before the anniversary that Somalia was in danger of perishing as a nation. Government troops, backed by African peacekeepers, are battling Islamist militants who control most of Somalia. A moderate Islamist, President Ahmed was elected by MPs to head Somalia's fragile transitional government 18 months ago. The country has been riven by conflict since President Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991. The BBC's Mohamed Moalimuu in the capital, Mogadishu, says it is the first time the president has gone to the front line to lead an attack. The government offensive follows two days of battles as fighters from the hardline Islamist al-Shabab group and their allies tried to regain recently lost ground in the north of the city. Our reporter says the government forces began shelling the Islamist stronghold of Karan, a residential area, on Wednesday evening. Hospital officials say so far eight people have been killed and 82 injured in Thursday's fighting. Programmes banned As the battles raged on Wednesday, an Islamist Hizbul-Islam group allied to al-Shabab in Mogadishu, ordered radio stations not to broadcast programmes to mark the 50th anniversary. Our reporter says that most stations have complied with the anniversary ban, except a government station and privately owned Radio Shabelle, which has recently moved to a government-controlled area of the city. Meanwhile, an explosion was reported at 0930 local time (0630 GMT) in a room in the presidency used for press conferences. The area was decorated for the anniversary celebrations with flowers and Somali flags. Eyewitnesses told the BBC it caused considerable damage to the area where VIPs usually sit. Officials say no-one was injured in the blast. In the last month, several ministers have resigned from the UN-backed government amid charges that it has been ineffective. The president's introduction of Sharia law to the Muslim country has done little to appease the Islamist militias fighting the government. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes in two decades of conflict that has created one of the world's worst humanitarian emergencies. Somalia was formed 50 years ago on 1 July 1960, when the Italian-administered southern part of the country joined the northern region, which had gained independence from Britain five days earlier.
source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/africa/10475590.stm Thanks Sgt doom!
What a shithole.
You say a country, I say a great military testing grounds. But then again, regulations and all. And a huge non-militant civilian population. It's a horrid mess, really.
You guys remember Black Hawk Down? It didn't actually happen in Somalia.
That UN armored vehicle covered in gun mounts at :42 is pretty neat. Really though, I don't think its possible to stabilize places like these. The people are too ethnically divided.
oh my fucking GOD youtube why wont you work, ESPECICALLY NOW I MUST SEE INSURGENTS KILLING EACHOTHER
People should just stop caring about shit countries. Pretty much all of them are way beyond "repair".
You guys remember Black Hawk Down? It didn't actually happen in Somalia.
Yes it did.
Found another source for it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/africa/10475590.stm
Found another source for it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/africa/10475590.stm
Hardfuckingcore.
You guys remember Black Hawk Down? It didn't actually happen in Somalia.
Yeah, Operation Gothic Serpent, US and UN involvement in Somalia, they never happened.
Oh it was Somalia Day too?
I wonder if Somalia will ever be stable.
Foe some reason I was thinking of the biggest and longest barfight ever when I read the title, sadly it's not that cool.
I didn't even know Somalia had a military. The militia's and insurgents probably outnumber them though.
Found another source for it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/africa/10475590.stm
Thank you. Have a heart.
That UN armored vehicle
A close look at the side of the Casspir shows that it's marked "AU", meaning the African Union. For a more on-topic comment, does Somalia even have a unified government?
I didn't even know Somalia had a military.
This too.
A close look at the side of the Casspir shows that it's marked "AU", meaning the African Union. For a more on-topic comment, does Somalia even have a unified government?
Somalia has a government, it just doesn't control the country. So its not really a unified government, but a semi-functional government that's only really effective in some areas of the country. Mostly around the capital.
This is what mentally handicapped people do when they gets high powered weaponry. Somalia is one big sandbox divided to the guys that fights for the red shovel, the blue tractor and the yellow bucket.
Fighting in Africa? So there's no news at all today? EDIT: In other news, the sun continues shining.
breaking news: Somalia in it's 1532th day of civil war.
You guys remember Black Hawk Down? It didn't actually happen in Somalia.
...I have no words for this, really truly speechless. What makes you think it didn't happen in Somalia, what would people gain by bullshitting about where black hawk down occurred? really?
You guys remember Black Hawk Down? It didn't actually happen in Somalia.
Yeah dude it happened in a movie set. Duh.
