For the past two months rumors about the successor to the Xbox 360 have flooded the internet. The rumors started shortly after Kotaku reported that the Durango would gain a Blu-ray drive, but lose some functionality with used games, a tactic that would greatly please publishers.
Next, Kotaku announced that "sources close to the project" informed them that the current code-name for the console was "Durango." Since then, speculation and rumors have lit up forums and news websites everywhere. At the time, Kotaku's rumor sounded quite far-fetched and many simply dismissed them as Kotaku's attempt to get more hits. As time passed, their rumor started to gain validity.
Less than two weeks after Kotaku revealed the code-name, a Crytek employee tweeted "Enjoying the Durango developers summit in London," which only added more ground to the rumor. Needless to say, that tweet and the employee's twitter account were soon deleted, but not before the internet had screen-capped it for all to see.
With Crytek all-but-confirming the code-name, it was only a matter of time until we actually got confirmation from Microsoft. Matt Schoenholz - Microsoft's Senior Creative Director at Xbox - has confirmed via Linkedin, that the console is the developmental stage.
" Currently helping define the next Xbox console, by redefining consumer touch-points across the entire Xbox ecosystem and focusing on ways in which design can strategically support a cohesive, convergent experience across hardware and software," says Schoenholz's LinkedIn profile.
Additionally, it should be noted that Schoenholz has been working on the console since January 2012 which coincides with Kotaku's first rumor. Almost 3 months have passed since that rumor first surfaced, so some of the details might have changed. Unless another employee leaks more information, then we most likely won't be hearing about the Durango for a while. Microsoft announced that they do not have plans to reveal a new console at this year's E3. If the Durango has been in development since January, then it is possible that they are not at a stage in development where a reveal would be plausible.
Now that we know the Durango exists, and the code-name is likely to be true, it should be interesting to see what other rumors prove themselves. Could Microsoft and Sony be tailoring their consoles to combat used game sales? As far-fetched as it sounds, with online passes locking out multiplayer and even single-player gameplay, it wouldn't surprise me if the next-generation consoles adopt this feature in some form.

As long as this DRM bullshit won't be on the new xbox I really don't care.
I don't believe Microsoft would do such a thing anyway.

What makes it not believable?
Is there any new information in the article? It basically just seems like more speculation aside from some generic managerial slang for "we're doing stuff and won't confirm any specific details". Is the news that they just admitted they're working on an xbox?

Look don't get me wrong, Microsoft makes retarded moves daily but I don't think they'll implant DRM. Seeing as pirating console games is really fucking hard and normally you get banned for it.
Pre-owned game stores will lose money from this, and trade it in sellers at video game shops will just be dead.
Yes they can do it, they may but I don't know if they will. We'll have to wait and see.. But they can always be cracked.

Yeah, i agree that it would be a dumb move for any of the companies to do this. But with the way the industry is progressing - online passes, season passes, and on-disc dlc - i wouldn't put it past them.
I think it's bad enough that Microsoft is practically sponsoring developers to do this shit.
Knowing that they're using "Durango" as a codename isn't terribly useful. The final product may not even be called that, the WiiU/Cafe wasn't, after all.
Still it would actually make sense to keep the Xbox brand name, and everyone in the game industry seems to be really shitty at naming things right now, so maybe they will keep it.
"Spills The Beans" makes the reader assume information on it was actually reported. this is just a confirmation.

Places like gamestop will probably stop being around if the no used copies thing goes to both consoles.
The majority of their income is through used games as far as I know.

It's not just a confirmation " redefining consumer touch-points across the entire Xbox ecosystem and focusing on ways in which design can strategically support a cohesive, convergent experience across hardware and software" gives us an idea of where they're going with this.

Well no shit they aren't using Durango as the console name. Hence it being the codename.

that is so vaguely worded that nothing can be learned from it
I bought an Xbox just two years ago.

Don't worry, you'll be fine. Chances are, there won't be many must-have titles at launch. Plus, next-gen might not be BC.

I can almost guarantee you a horribly rocky start for the new xbox. Also with the way things seem to work now; i wouldn't be surprised if the new xbox support backwards compatibility.
