I'm almost done with Farscape, and itching to get into another show. Hopefully some of you will have some good recommendations. Here are my favorite scifi shows in no particular order:
-Stargate SG-1 and all other spinoffs (Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe). On a side note, though SGU for some reason unknown to myself got a really bad reputation, it improved leaps and bounds in the second half of the second season. Those last 10 episodes are some of my favorites of the entire Stargate franchise--which seriously needs a reboot (I'm still going through withdrawal).
-Farscape
-Battlestar Galactica (Remake)
-Falling Skies
-Firefly
Of those, although I'm at heart a Stargate fanboy, sadly it isn't in my opinion the best of those shows. That'd probably be either Battlestar Galactica or Firefly, which, if it had more than a 13 episode run, would probably be the best scifi show of all time.
You'll notice I haven't put any of the Star Treks on here. I haven't really watched them that much, and can't get into them. Same with Babylon 5. Tried it, couldn't get into it.
I really love Space Opera, but there really is little of very good quality out there. I may yet try Star Trek, but I'm not sure which to go with. I've watched a little of the Original Series and I'm just not really a fan. Maybe I'll go with the Next Generation... maybe not. In any case, unless someone steers me away from it, I'll probably watch Andromeda next.
Half-life
.. oh wait
If you wan't to get into Star Trek, I'd start with The Next Generation. Jean-Luc Picard is my personal favorite of the Captains.
Also, for Sci-Fi, the X-Files isn't bad either, but it's not Space Opera.
I absolutely loved BSG. I can't really watch another Scifi show because of that. I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread and see if there's anything that interests me.
Fringe. It's the only show I watch, and it's very enjoyable. It has an interesting/confusing plot that really only gets going in the second season, but it's great. Yeah, I'm bad at explaining things. Just watch it and find out everything :P
Also all the Stargates, as OP mentioned. Although, a(nother?) reboot of the franchise would not interest me, at least not initially. I've gotten too attached to the characters and what happened in those 17 seasons to start all over again. Only a time machine and some way to stop Syfy from cancelling SGU would completely satisfy me. Or maybe we could abuse the quantum mirror, and go into another universe where the franchise was finished.
Babylon 5 is probably my favorite scifi series ever just because it tells a fantastic story and features so many great characters and moments.
Along with Farscape for the same reasons.
I still need to check out the Star Treks too, only watched the DS9 all the way through and bits of TNG and Voyager and TOS.
DS9 does get incredibly good S3 and onward.
And oh yeah, Fringe too.
Gets off to a formulaic X-Files start and then takes a u-turn into amazing.
I'd mention BSG but really, it was a massive disappointment for me in the end.
Got hamfisted with the religion and the finale was just abysmal.
doesn't everyone important turn out to be a cylon or something?
That's not what happens at all. I thought the ending was very satisfying and obviously, Marine, you're watching Battlestar Galactica for the wrong reasons. The story does, admittedly, slow, but the religion becomes integral to the narrative. It has some wonderful themes that make you think a bit, the most obvious of which is "Are we doomed to repeat the mistakes of our ancestors?" The show attempts to make the case that this is sadly true. In short, to really enjoy Battlestar Galactica, you need to think.
I'd suggest just for general Sci-Fi the standard Dr. Who, X-Files, and Fringe. Warehouse 13 isn't seeming too bad, but I'm not very far into it.

I never felt like anything in the show warranted deep thinking, it was all pretty much laid out.
I watched the show for the characters and drama and it pretty much failed in that regard in the later half of s3 and then just proceeded to rape and destroy the characters.
It did have its moments in the last season though.

Season 4 was where the subtext started to seep into the show. I found it very interesting.
Even then, the drama was just as good as the rest of the show. Season 4 even has my favorite episodes in it ("The Oath" and "Blood on the Scales"). I reckon the show was incredibly strong throughout the entirety of its run. One of the greatest things I've ever seen on television.
Get in to Doctor Who. I recommend starting with the new stuff. Its really only the hardcore fans and older fans that watch the old stuff. Also the second doctor in the new series was the best IMO.
Also like The_J_Hat said, Star Trek. I only watch 2 series though. My favorite is Deep Space Nine, but its got alot of characters from Next Generation in it. So you might want to watch that one first.
You might like V. Though I'm not into that whole "Lizard people rule the world" thing. But it was okay I guess.

I might also suggest Babylon 5 and Torchwood. Torchwood is a spin off of Doctor Who, so you should watch that first.
I don't know if you like Comedic Sci-Fi, but if you do check out Red Dwarf. Its pretty much Star Trek but its about a crew of idiots. Its very funny but also very Science Fictiony.
