• Lumbar punctures and why they suck

Yesterday morning, after two days of sickness, I started to feel better and thus went to school on ye olde bike. On the way however, I suddenly felt a big thump on the back of my head, followed by it feeling warm and painful. Now, I have these things every few months, but this one was bad, and I mean BAD. Got disoriented, lost control of my bike and almost hit a tree. Rang my mom, all in shock and went back home, slow, tired, lethargic. My mom decided to take me straight to the doctor's because this one was heavier than usual. After some tests, I was told to go see the neurologist at the hospital. He did some tests on me, took notes and then took me off for a CT scan. Some blood was taken and I was then put into the waiting room. Some time later, he came back in and told me he wanted to get me admitted to the hospital. Turns out that what I felt sounded like a haemorrhage between my brain and meninges. The reason I was admitted is to be definitely sure if I had one. If I didn't, then fine. The problem however if I did have one was that anytime in the future, I could have a major one, also known as a brain haemorrhage, which isn't exactly benificiary. I had to stay one night and a lumbar puncture the next morning to get some brain fluid (couldn't do it there and then because if any blood from the needle came in, they wouldn't be able to tell which was which). Fast forward to 10.30 this morning, when the doctor came in and told me to lay on the bed with my spine curled as far as possible. Some preparing was done and then it happened. For the unaware, a lumbar puncture is when they take a bigass needle (roughly 3 inches, no joke) and shove it in your spinal column (almost all the way), right into the drainage canal for brain fluid. Now, I had never had one of these before so I didn't know what to expect. It is fucking horrible. It hurts so fucking bad and it's not even all of the pain at the same time (i.e. continious), it's in shocks, which is even worse. It went on for what felt like half an hour. I'm not somebody who cries or screams fast when in pain, and I was screaming and crying like a newborn baby, it hurt so fucking much. After that, it's laying flat for 90 minutes. That's right, flat, no moving AT ALL for an hour and a half, and that's a lot longer when you're lying in a hospital bed (thank god for ipods). Got the results back later and it was good news, not a minor haemorrhage. Probably some sort of joint at the top of my spinal column acting up and causing massive muscle cramp. But then comes the aftermath. Walking, bending over, any sort of action involving your spine hurts so bad. It's now 6:45 PM and I'm still walking like an old man. I pray that it's better tomorrow or school's gonna be a whole new challenge altogether, with all my rooms being on any floor but the ground floor. If I can't get a key to the elevator, there's gonna be hell, walking up stairs is a nightmare. There are a few positives though: - Lots of attention tomorrow in school - All I need is a cane and I have a Halloween costume (GET OFF MA LAWN YA DARN KIDS!) - An excuse to use the elevator So, Facepunch, has anybody else here had an experience with lumbar punctures?
I thought your lumbar was your lower back?

At least you can jack into the matrix now.

I get that too.. I've chosen to ignore it :geno:
is this neck thing youre talking about whiplash?
The only thing I felt which is remotely related to a whiplash is the headache. Besides, I didn't have an accident, I haven't been headbanging violently, nothing that could cause a whiplash. And even if it was, I would've had several of them by now.
Existenz is a badass movie.
