• US troops enter Poland, 1st deployment at Russia's doorstep
American soldiers rolled into Poland on Thursday, fulfilling a dream some Poles have had since the fall of communism in 1989 to have U.S. troops on their soil as a deterrent against Russia. Some people waved and held up American flags as U.S. troops in tanks and other vehicles crossed into southwestern Poland from Germany and headed toward the town of Zagan, where they will be based. Poland's prime minister and defense minister will welcome them in an official ceremony Saturday. "This is the fulfilment of a dream," said Michal Baranowski, director of the German Marshall Fund think tank in Warsaw. "And this is not just a symbolic presence but one with a real capability." U.S. and other Western nations have carried out exercises on NATO's eastern flank in past years, but the new deployment — which includes some 3,500 U.S. troops — marks the first-ever continuous deployment to the region by a NATO ally. It is part of a larger commitment by President Barack Obama to protect a region that grew deeply nervous when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and then began backing separatist rebels in Ukraine's east. There are fears, however, that the enhanced security could eventually be undermined by the pro-Kremlin views of President-elect Donald Trump. Poland and the Baltic states also feel threatened by Russia's recent deployment of nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, the Russian territory wedged between Poland and Lithuania. But Russia says it's the one who is threatened. "These actions threaten our interests, our security," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. "Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It's not even a European state." Worries about the permanence of the new U.S. security commitments are rooted in a tragic national history in which Poland has often lost out in deals made by the great powers. Poles still feel betrayed by Obama's "reset" with Russia early on in his administration, which involved abandoning plans for a major U.S. missile defense system in Poland and replacing it with plans for a less ambitious system, still not in place. "All recent U.S. presidents have thought there can be a grand bargain with Russia," said Marcin Zaborowski, a senior associate at Visegrad Insight, an analytic journal on Central Europe. "Trump has a proclivity to make deals, and Central and Eastern Europe have reason to worry about that."
https://apnews.com/cb5d55ba66694c2ca0f4094e26926345
I hope my unit can get in on this. If I could get a few days off in Poland or one of the Baltic states, that'd be kickass.
Proud day for the Commonwealth, the annexation shall be a wonderous gift for king trump.
This is terrifying. I hope this isn't going escalate further.
This is terrifying. I hope this isn't going escalate further.
Poland is a sovereign nation. They have every right to invite another nation onto their soil.
Poland is a sovereign nation. They have every right to invite another nation onto their soil.
This is not relevant. A buildup of military force on any border is a bad sign. If Russia started lining up battleships around Alaska and the Pacific, Americans would be shitting themselves. Appropriately, I am practically shitting myself.
My guess? Obama is sending troops so when Trump tries to improve relations with Putin, Trump will be forced to withdraw them. Then it'll look like he's giving up territory. Which he is. Maybe in exchange, the deal will give the Republican party it's dynasty back in some way using Putin's power. So Putin gets something, America's democracy is made a mockery of. And the Republican's take over again. All while we scream at eachother over what Trump's intern was told to put on Twitter.
This is not relevant. A buildup of military force on any border is a bad sign. If Russia started lining up battleships around Alaska and the Pacific, Americans would be shitting themselves.
Absolutely fucking nothing is going to come of this.
This is terrifying. I hope this isn't going escalate further.
sitting back and continuing to allow putin to do whatever he pleases with no repercussions will produce a worse outcome.

Which would be their choice since it's kinda their lands. And not really that big a deal if their reason for being there is specifically for the nation they're being invited into, such as is the case here.
Proud day for the Commonwealth, the annexation shall be a wonderous gift for king trump.
We get it, you don't like Trump.
I don't mind this. I'm confident in Obama that this isn't just bullshit, especially with how nervous some of our allies neighboring Russia have been feeling lately. I want them to know we're by their side.
"Oh noooo! Two nuclear superpowers with mildly strained relations are like, toooootally gonna' go to open war and start world war 3! It's not like we spent the better part of a century with relations so much ball-shatteringly WORSE that we refused to speak to each other for years at a time, and even then just funded pissant proxy wars and made snide remarks at each other across the ocean!" Do you people even fucking understand how this shit works? This is posturing, all of it. There's not going to be a war between the U.S. and Russia, especially not when their [del]golden[/del] orange boy is about to get into office. There's too much to lose, too much economic interconnection, and so fucking little to gain. There's no fucking point. Russia just wants to snidely gobble up little bits of territory when other nations are looking the other way for whatever fucking reason Putin's decided on. They don't want an actual fucking war, they're not going to fucking roll troops into Poland or any country while U.S. troops are there, and likewise the U.S. has nothing to gain from going into Russia. Fuck off with this WW3 meme shit.
Proud day for the Commonwealth, the annexation shall be a wonderous gift for king trump.
You aren't a real country unless you have conquered Poland at least once
I hope my unit can get in on this. If I could get a few days off in Poland or one of the Baltic states, that'd be kickass.
Yoo lets get SHITFACED
I hope my unit can get in on this. If I could get a few days off in Poland or one of the Baltic states, that'd be kickass.
I am jealous that the Navy doesn't do tours like that, I went to East Hungary near Ukraine over a year ago and I've always wanted to hit up Poland the Baltic sisters but the only bases we have are Rota and southern Italy and both of those places are shitholes. Then again you don't have the chance run amok in Asia and AUS/NZ in the Army so I guess it's a tradeoff.
It's literally 3,500 troops, they aren't exactly prepping for an invasion.
Yeah, it essentially makes no difference what so ever, considering the fair-ish size of the polish millitary. It's mostly symbolic
I hope my unit can get in on this. If I could get a few days off in Poland or one of the Baltic states, that'd be kickass.
with our incoming komander in chief, its pretty much certain putin will demand these guys be moved and trump will do it
My guess? Obama is sending troops so when Trump tries to improve relations with Putin, Trump will be forced to withdraw them.
Which Trump, being the man he is, will interpret as a challenge. I expect he'd going to withdraw these troops almost immediately after taking office, most likely as part of some grand deal.
Something tells me the Germans would not get such a warm welcome when they enter Poland compared to the US.
Which Trump, being the man he is, will interpret as a challenge. I expect he'd going to withdraw these troops almost immediately after taking office, most likely as part of some grand deal.
why does it matter
Ladies and Gentlemen. Get ready for World War III.
Which Trump, being the man he is, will interpret as a challenge. I expect he'd going to withdraw these troops almost immediately after taking office, most likely as part of some grand deal.
The Irony is that every president that takes office thinks that a 'Grand Deal' can be made with Russia in any capacity. Obama's Russian Reset had America back off from NATO commitments and Europe in order to improve relations with Russian including cancelling the planned bases and Missile defense systems in Poland, and while it seems like it was a good idea for while Russia just seemed to eventually see it as an opportunity to take advantage of us. Trump will fair no better.
Ladies and Gentlemen. Get ready for World War III.
I'm not too worried, at this point it can last a week at the very most until it's called off.
