Seven people who were among the armed occupiers of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon earlier this year were acquitted Thursday of charges related to the 41-day standoff.
Sauce Apparently this shit is okay if you're white.
Three of them are still facing charges.
Absurd. The entire Bundy family are basically sovereign citizens who refused to recognize the constitutionality of federal ownership of land and refused to pay grazing fees to use land that they didn't even own for grazing. This was literally a bunch of racist backwater hicks pointing guns at the legal property-owners of the land they were trespassing on. It was owned by the federal government and managed by the BLM. The entire Bundy argument was "but it's federally owned so it's public use," basically. Clive Bundy and his sons are the definition of entitled. They armed themselves against the legal owners of the land they were illegally using and then refused to even recognize that the land was owned by the government. It was basically some random guy walking into your house, using the bathroom once a week, refusing to stop, and then screaming bloody murder when you finally call the cops on him. And then bringing a bunch of random friends with guns to lay claim on your bathroom under threat of violent retaliation. Very disappointed in this. Just legitimizes the rhetoric of sovereign citizens.
The reason for the aquittal is that 15 of the members were actually government informers. Most crimes that they were being charged on relied on the intent, and the presence of so many informers raised questions about the others being influenced or even entrapped by them. So much so that there wasn't any way the jury could find the defendants guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
what a fucking joke. in addition to their occupation, they also trashed the place and damage an archeological site. these clowns should be locked up.

Still incredibly disappointing that they'll be able to get away with organizing an armed revolt against the federal government over something as idiotic as grazing rights on federal land. Especially when they're so blatantly in the wrong.
Every now and again we see old cowboy wannabe guys protest around the courthouse/jail where they keep these loons locked up. It's usually like seven guys at most, sitting around in the shit weather with their cowboy gear with some picket signs. I didn't even know they held them here until a few months ago. That said, I wish they could have indicted these guys or something but the specter of entrapment seems to haunt the case. 15 informers seems a bit ridiculous though.
Good, maybe this will convince the movement that the government isn't near as bad as they thought. Though the way I've seen the rightwingers go this last year I doubt it. Though the next people who try shit like this should get the book thrown hard at them.

Their presence in these groups makes up a large portion of the membership. I read a story once where a sovereign citizen cell turned out to be 3/4 composed government agents and the ATF was investigating an FBI agent or something.
Going to be the devil's advocate. But probably the reason why they didn't arrest these half minded morons is possibly not to create another shitstorm in the wake of the election. Considering half the shit the Trumpsters scream about "Civil war" or violent protests, they would flock like geese to another "Bundy Family Uprising". I can say this is probably the best idea. I live in Nebraska and constantly hear shit from the small town folk who say the protest itself was "Justified." Happens when most of the small towns around here are farmers and ranchers, or have deep roots in agriculture like the Bundy Family. So they have this half retarded romantic view of the Bundy family fighting the "Bad Government." So a combination of another Bundy scenario and the Trumpsters probably pissed as hell from losing the election (which is bound to happen at this rate). It would be much uglier than the first time.
This was literally a bunch of racist backwater hicks
At what point did there occupation become about race?
At what point did there occupation become about race?
(Edit- previous text removed, misunderstood context of Scorpious's question) I think Isak's mostly just saying that the Bundys are a bunch of backwards idiots, not necessarily implying that their occupation itself is about race.
Since when is "racist" a synonym for "stupid"?
Since the beginning of time? EDIT: I mean, there are multiple intelligences. Ben Carson is proof of that. Great neuroscientist. Still believes the pyramids were used to store grain.
Since when is "racist" a synonym for "stupid"?
Clive Bundy literally said that "the Negroes" had it better when they were slaves. They're a bunch of blatantly racist backwater sovereign citizen hillbilly terrorist militiamen and I have no respect for them. They're both racist and stupid and they all deserve jail - only reason they aren't in jail is because of undercover informants who gave them a technical out.
