Ireland this week appointed a new Minister of State with Responsibility for Drug Strategy, and his first task will be to examine whether drug laws need to be relaxed.
Aodhán Ó Ríordáin will raise the issue in the Dáil as the current National Drugs Strategy expires next year....

He was quick to point out there is a big difference between decriminalisation and legalisation, but suggested that the latter will also be discussed.
Probably won't happen though, because we must protect the children from the evils of drugs even though we're a nation renowned (infamous?) for being alcoholics.
Decriminalising is the worst of both worlds. That just means that you're essentially rewarding crime, not from the individual users but for those who sell it.

No, it would mean you'd be rewarding legitimate people who want to sell it as a regulated commodity. You'd be putting the "dealers" out of business and either be forcing them to become legit, or stop.

Decriminalising =/= Legalising. Dealers will still deal weed, buyers will still buy from weed. No such thing as the dealers turning legit with just decriminalisation. It's a far cry from turning it into a regulated commodity. Depends on how they decriminalise it too, Switzerland for example, its decriminalised, but only for posession, not for transport or sale. I imagine a similar thing would happen, not illegal to possess (maybe up to certain amounts) but illegal and still criminalised for the growth, transport and sale.
Yeah that's how it is where i live. If you aren't dealing it the cops don't give a fuck. It's better for the smokers but not any better for the dealers.
i've never heard of a place decriminalizing both the consumption and sale, is there any country that does this? always seemed pretty obvious to me that when people talk about decriminalizing, they're talking about making the use legal

There's a handfull of countries that have done.
None of this makes any sense, why would you make use legal but distribution illegal? It's like, well they obviously illegally bought it from people breaking the law but they're fine, why not just make sale and growth legal too so law abiding citizens aren't funding criminals?
