Commentators exist because of popularity, mainly. Showing funny or weird videos causes people to laugh, and as a result, they depend on the commentor to deliver more of said videos, creating a sort of popularity for the person.
Which is, unfortunately, probably the only reason Ray William Douchebag was ever popular.
