Well, get ready for a nostalgia hurricane, because Coleco is back on the scene with a new home console—and it’ll play actual game cartridges. The hero of this comeback story is called Coleco Chameleon. This 21st-century console will play 20th-century 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit titles. There will also be brand new games with similar graphics available, too, so Coleco is smartly cashing in on the popularity of retro-style 2D titles that have been hits on all platforms from smartphones to Steam.

No specific games have been announced, and it's unclear if the console will be backwards compatible with older Coleco titles. The console's defining quality is its reversion to game cartridges, a technology that hasn't been in a major console since the Nintendo 64. "All game cartridges will include high quality, plastic clamshell cases with illustrated instruction manuals and game developer liner notes," the company says.
http://toyland.gizmodo.com/old-school-video-game-maker-coleco-is-making-a-new-cart-1748546892 http://www.theverge.com/2015/12/17/10428976/coleco-chameleon-console-game-cartridges
Sweet, if they get some decent support behind this it could be something I'd get behind. Need to hear some more specific details, particularly about its games library before it can be taken too seriously though.
this will go nowhere and just be an attempt to cash in on nostalgia factor ~retro 2d~ games have proven time and time again to be a shitty market to aim for
Its controller makes it look like one of those "Ultimate Gaming Systems" that are just an NES/Atari on a chip made to look like a popular console. Not knocking this, I just get that vibe from that controller.

You really need a console for this? Don't most flat screens have a port in the back and or Ethernet cable
Says the man with an undertale avatar
yes, a great point to make. everyone knows that someone, based on their avatar in relation to their own point and disregarding the factor of relevance, automatically loses their logical validity when you point out their visual representation on an online forum.
So you need 2 right thumbs to press any buttons while using the joystick?
sounds stupid as fuck. Who is this targeted towards? [editline]18th December 2015[/editline]
i think this could still definitely appeal to a few people, and the low hardware specifications typical of a pixel graphic based systems, combined with cartridges being cheap to make unless i'm mistaken, might make it a popular choice to those who simply don't want to pick from other current selections, or can't afford anything else.
Collect is still alive?
So you need 2 right thumbs to press any buttons while using the joystick?
... How is that any different from a playstation or xbox controller?
Says the man with an undertale avatar
yikes, sick zinger there unfortunately one single 2d game is pretty different from an entire console based around them so im not sure what your point is
I remember reading about this back in May when it was just called the Retro VGS. Now it's partnered with the Coleco? Huh. Still using that weird ripoff Wii U Pro Controller too.
Also they just ripped off the Atari Jagular for the console design [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/Atari-Jaguar-Console-Set.png[/t]

Oh god no not that shitty bootleg Wii U pro controller. Those things are beyond awful
Controller design suits me fine, the Wii U Pro Controller is probably my favourite console controller since the GameCube.
Controller design suits me fine, the Wii U Pro Controller is probably my favourite console controller since the GameCube.
The design isn't the problem. The problem is it's a recolor of a specific brand of bootleg Wii U pro controllers, which are NOTORIOUSLY shitty for being broke right out of the box, I know when I picked one up the piece of shit wouldn't synch to anything and the synch button was actually broke, being wedged deep inside the controller itself This is gonna be another trainwreck to add to the pile
Ah, thought you were referring to the Pro Controller directly. Never had any experiences with dodgy ones! So you're saying this doesn't just resemble the controller, but this is actually the kind of bootleg controller you referred to?? Would be a pretty stupid decision if it is intended to be the final product.

So it's kinda like a bigger OUYA? Unless this is going to cost less than a Raspberry PI 2, no way will this be a hit
I literally need this with every fiber of my being. GIVE ME MY NOSTALGIA BACK!
I'm not interested if it doesn't have HDMI output!
From what I read while this was still the Retro VGS, one of the hardware guys quit and made a big post on how the team had absolutely no idea what they were doing. Maybe with Coleco on board, it'll be better, but right now it looks like an even cheaper OUYA with carts

It looks cool! But seems like a bit of a gimmick
Ha it's this scam The Retro VGS is lead by a man who actually believes AAA gaming will go back to 16-bit with his hideously overpriced console. The console most likely doesn't even exist.
