Things have been bubbling over at Konami towers for a while now, but this is something else.
If you’re not up to speed on the current happenings, there’s reportedly a personal feud going on between Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima and the powers that be at the top of Konami. The latter 30 year-strong titan of the industry has been increasingly getting into gambling machines and sports equipment over the years, but until 2015 have never put a major foot wrong gaming-wise.
All that changed when the ‘Kojima vs. Konami’ saga spilt out into peoples’ homes, as the twin-developed (with Guillermo del Toro) Silent Hills teaser P.T. was pulled from Sony’s servers last month as some attempt to eradicate all of Kojima’s involvement in anything – only for the PS4’s inbuilt license-checking protocols to lock your game library when it can’t find the original file.
This essentially means that if you ever had P.T. on your system, your library is at risk of completely locking up; despite you literally owning everything that’s on there, and P.T. being a free giveaway in the first place.
And one more for good luck

And the guys twitter

I hope this is incorrect, or fixable since I own P.T and some digital games, my PS4 is at home which is hours away so I don't know if I am affected.
_UPDATE_
So my friend said that what happens when you switch accounts, is that the games get locked.
So what probably happened here is that he switched accounts.
It may or may not be a false alarm..Probably a false alarm as my PS4 is fine, and my other friends who own a PS4 and P.T isn't bricked.
Oh and the guy on twitter is playing MGS GZ, which is a downloaded game.
hopefully sony won't let this happen and will fix it
Never going to happen lol don't believe the sensationalism.
Yeah no, I dunno if it is but this kinda sounds illegal, and while Konami is stupid I don't think they'd stoop that low.
So every time a demo or game gets pulled from the market, it may brick your PS4?
I'd think that Sony would make it so pulled games would still pass whatever checks they put in.
[editline]12th May 2015[/editline]
That twitter guy claims that even if you deleted PT, you'd still be at risk. That's a pretty crappy bug.
Would this affect just the PS4 that had P.T., or that user's whole PSN account?
This entire situation is a trainwreck.
Quoting myself from GG thread:
Sounds more like shitty system/unintended side-effect than actual malice to me.
I highly doubt this is deliberate.
I doubt it. Many games have been taken down due to licensing problems and have never affected any accounts or PlayStations
how many times can you fuck up, sony/konami?
I doubt it. Many games have been taken down due to licensing problems and have never affected any accounts or PlayStations
Those are still on Sony servers, being able to be redownloaded to anyone who bought them.
I still have San Andreas even after it was removed from the PSN store.
Konami really wants to be the shitest game company this year, to a point where it is almost impressive.
I think the thing here is, the licensing forces you to delete and redownload the games you have, since P.T. is no longer on the servers, you can't download it again, basically a mass extinction event.
Making you redownload everything just to ensure P.T. is eradicated from systems though? Talk about overkill.
I own PT and my games aren't locked.
The truth is Konami would be nowhere without Kojima, and people wanted the new Silent Hills as it looked something fresh and actually a decent type of Horror in an otherwise genre saturated with games that didn't actually do just that.....Horror! but instead they opted to doubleback and pussy out of making something potentially new and fresh, i'm hoping Kojima can obtain the rights to his franchises ( they pretty much are his as a given they'd once again be nowhere without him ) But i very much doubt even Konami is stupid enough to do this.
There's no way Sony deleted the files from their system, at most they've disabled access to them for everything except verification. Sony has full control over that shit and they aren't going to damage their system because Konami is throwing a fit on its way out of the gaming industry.

If Konami own the IP rights I bet they're going to charge a shitload for Kojima to buy them.

Crowdfund to help Kojima buy back some of his IPs.
If this is true I'm going to be pissed. I haven't had any issues yet but I haven't been on my PS4 very much recently.
Crowdfund to help Kojima buy back some of his IPs.
If Konami are as spiteful as they seem good luck with that.
Crowdfund to help Kojima buy back some of his IPs.
A new Snatcher game would be fucking awesome
Oh look, another gaming article written to generate pitchfork mobs based entirely off of a single tweet, which not even the authors of the original story could reproduce.
Crowdfund to help Kojima buy back some of his IPs.
Kojima could Crowdfund anything and easily get the funds plus more. I feel that the IP's are going to be in Limbo once Konami retreat away from the console market proper.
He could kickstart a dating sim if he wanted.
I've checked my system a couple of times today, paranoid about this and I'm happy to report no problems. Everything including PT is unlocked and playable.
I get the impression this has nothing to do with PT and somebody jumped to conclusions.
lol tbh i hope kojima somehow starts up independent one day, and brings back p.t. as a project that way
because honestly konami has been severely disappointing. they lost my respect so quickly
Instead of buying old IPs, how about Kojima make some new ones.
Man what in the hell has gotten into Konami lately? I think someone must have had a severe head injury or let the guys from sonic team run the company because they have gone full retard
There was server maintainence, and if your PS4 was not set to your Primary system, digital titles and DLC would have been locked.
You can have two PS4 systems under an account, one primary and one secondary. Primary only needs to verify licenses once, and then you can play the game or DLC without connecting it to the internet.
Secondary systems needs to verify licenses each time you start a game, this is to prevent people giving their log-in to friends so they can get free games.

I'm pretty sure Konami, to some extent, has always been like this. There was an incident back with Silent Hill 2 and I think 3 where they just didn't pay the voice actors. It's just that this time, it's involving one of the few people in the game industry whose name alone can sell people on a game, so it's much more obvious.

They want to go back out of the game business and go full japan and only work on pachinko machines i'm pretty sure
