SALEM, Mass. – A Massachusetts teenager was convicted Tuesday of raping and killing his high school math teacher when he was 14.
Philip Chism followed his 9th grade algebra teacher, Colleen Ritzer, into a school bathroom, strangled her, stabbed her at least 16 times and raped her.
Chism, now 16, was convicted of a raping Ritzer inside the bathroom but was acquitted of a second rape, committed with a tree branch in woods near the school where Chism put her body. He was also convicted of armed robbery for stealing Ritzer's credit cards and her underwear.
Chism stared straight ahead and did not have any visible reaction as the verdicts were read in Salem Superior Court. His mother declined to talk to reporters as she left the courthouse.
Though the case took place a while ago, its news because he was officially found guilty.
The defense tried to say he was innocent, but it was disproved by the prosecution.
What the fuck, why?
During the trial, his lawyer admitted Chism killed Ritzer, but said he was suffering from severe mental illness and was not criminally responsible for his actions. A psychiatrist who testified for the defense said Chism was hearing voices and in the throes of a psychotic episode when he killed Ritzer.
This seems important, if it's true.

But this seems to imply he does not care.
Jesus Christ, 14?

He literally killed his teacher, put her in a garbage bag, and dragged her out of the school like it was normal.
I think he knew what he was doing.
yup. everyone that knew this kid says he wanted to fuck that teacher more than anything else, and killed her when he eventually realized that his sick student-teacher fantasy wasn't going to play out the way he wanted it too

Are you sure because that bolded part makes me thing he was batshit insane

..So why are you just dismissing the fact that he was supposedly having a psychotic episode but you'll mention the fact that he drug a fucking body out of a school like it was "normal"

How though, he's clearly fucked in the head, and what you said before that kind of proves it.

The murder seemed pre-planned, and less of a psychotic outburst. Obviously hes fucked in the head, doesnt mean he should be able to plea insanity.

yes this is a normal thing that normal people who are not criminally insane do

except it is insanity to want to fuck your teacher and then cut her to pieces and drag her out of the school calmly.
guys, he was mentally ill, it wasnt his fault!!! that makes the murder and rape he committed excusable!!!
for real? i mean, are you people implying he doesnt deserve jail time or what? i dont see how you could defend this kid at all, whether he had problems or not murder/rape can NEVER be excused.

Because he followed and completed multiple scenarios during and after the act, attempted to hide said acts, which is rote premeditation, which 100% obviates a psychotic break.
You guys are misreading what Hooded is saying. Those that kill within a psychotic episode usually do it quickly and without much thought. The whole phrase of "blacking out from adrenaline" comes from this as whatever triggers you becomes more of a crime of passion, rather then anything realistically tied to a safe mental state. This case though... It was planned, thought out, and the sick fuck already had ideas of how to go about getting rid of the evidence.
This is not to say that those experiencing psychotic tendencies are incapable of formulating plans, but the whole divergence between something which can be seen as criminally insane and that which is fine to stand trial is easily noticeable. Anyone who is capable of planning an attack, planning how to dispose a body, and planning the cleanup is perfectly sane to stand trial in my eyes.
Either way I wouldn't want him to be free on the streets of my town. Lock that bugger away.

This.
Apparently, a lot of people here don't understand how insanity actually works legally. To be considered insane, you have to actually be so debilitated by some sort of mental disorder/illness that, within the determination of experts, you're not competent enough to understand what's happening to you. And basically, this is rarely the case in reality, which is why only like 1% of insanity pleas actually are accepted.
This kid knew exactly what he was doing, planned it, did it, and that's that. He deserves no sympathy, given the extreme brutality of his crime and his lack of remorse, and if he doesn't wind up dying over it eventually as he deserves to, then it is imperative that he is never allowed back into society again.
Regardless of whether he's criminally accountable for his actions or not (due to possible psychosis) he's still not a safe person to have in society.
Somebody who doesn't understand the gravity of a horrific crime is just unfit to live in civilized society. Criminal justice is wasted on people who don't have a capacity to understand why their crime was horrible, he just needs to be kept in an institution of some kind so he can never do something like that again. Frankly, with the severity and methodically disturbing nature of the crime I don't think anything he says during his parole hearings will be taken very seriously.
