Air pollution in the Chinese capital reached new, choking heights on Thursday. Those who still felt the urge to catch a glimpse of sunlight were able to gather around the city’s gigantic LED screens, where this glorious sunrise was broadcast as part of a patriotic video loop.
House Vernius called, it wants its idea back.
damn it, did nobody get my outdated reference? oh well.
That looks so incredibly dystopian.
Maybe that's a sign

Well it is an authoritarian Oligarchy.
Thank fuck I don't live in China.
They've had those giant TV screens up for a while. That one is at Tiananmen Square. There's two large ones beside the Peoples' War Monument and they usually broadcast patriotic stuff and show fly-by sites of the countryside and landmarks in throughout the country.

Yeah exactly, I think that specific scene with the sun rise, is an ad for some other province. Kinda misleading title, but still a very depressing picture.
I feel sorry for the people living there...
It's like the axiom from Wall-e :v:

Except it's dirty, socially dreadful, poverty being daily reality, instead of clean, absolutely carefree and in everlasting excess.
So, not really.

because it is. China is literally a dystopian state that sci-fi novelists warned us about in the 50's and 60's.

As horrible as that smog is it seems like it would be interesting to photograph there.

It's a screen showing a sunrise being compared to a screen showing a sunrise
and
you say not really????

He means that in China, the air is polluted beyond belief, whereas the ship in Wall-E is obsessively cleaned by robots and the atmosphere is perfect.

Um these were just speedtraps being tested.
Not even 1984 or any other dystopian books I've read did this, just thinking about this boggles the mind.
They can't see the sun properly anymore because of the pollution so they put fucking giant LED screens showing sunrises with propaganda on loop around the city
just

No, the LED screens have been there for a long time. It just happened to show tourism ads with the sun and cool landscape. Someone then snapped a picture and decided that it was put up there as some kind of "artificial sunrise".

edit: changed title
It's still a pretty cool photo.
China should tier their city. Smoggy ground industrial layer, rich and vibrant upper levels.

Ah yes, lets totally give the rich and powerful all the free non polluted air and the sun... While all those that are too poor and terribly unfortunate get nothing but shit.
Worked in Bioshock Infinite right? or hell why not go one step further!
i have to ask, is there a bigger resolution version of the pic in the op? it just looks so cool
edit: nvm found a slightly bigger one
As horrible as that smog is it seems like it would be interesting to photograph there.
True. Still, the fact China has such terrible smog levels in spite of the dire hazards of fossil fuels does seem pretty similar to how we end up with tons of unlicensed Chinese knockoff tat in the shops. It seems like they just do what they want without doing the sensible thing and think about the rest of humanity.
And by that, I mean they do what they want/don't think about humanity to a greater extent than the rest of us.

Notice how USA is the same color as China... and do note there are 4 times more people living in china than US.

the US isn't even close to china in how nasty it is though
Why's the smog written with a capital "S"? I confused it with Smaug at first glance.
