The White House just gave women in STEM a boost.
President Donald Trump signed two laws on Tuesday that authorize NASA and the National Science Foundation to encourage women and girls to get into STEM fields. Those are science, technology, engineering and math.
"It's not fair and it's not even smart," Trump said of the low percentage of women with STEM degrees who actually work in the field. About a quarter of the women with STEM degrees work in the field.

Great news! Now if only he reverses his stance on climate change.
Great news! Now if only he reverses his stance on climate change.
At this point I'm fairly certain he's aware of it. He just doesn't care.
Are they going to create a budget for it, or are astronauts and engineers going to be coerced into travelling around to schools for free?
what fluf though, if he was really concerned about this he should have not put devos in charge of the dep of ed or planned massive budget cuts to US science research, education, and the epa.

I don't think he denies it personally, it's more of because he is in the Republican party, therefore forced to deny it.

If he's so anti-establishment, he shouldn't have a problem going against the grain.
can we promote the president in STEM too
This is great news, made all the better for how effective it will be in exposing the hypocrisy of his followers. Good work, Trump.
"We really need more farmers," Trump says, as he burns down every farm in sight.
Saying "put more girls in labcoats" doesn't change the fact that he's systematically undermining every major scientific and academic field with his other policies.

But the current US system doesn't allow you into office unless you are Republican or Democrat. We see this happen in every election, the other parties are always kicked off from debates, talks and other things. Which is why he is making sure he is labeled as one of those parties.

What is this have to do with his followers?

Trump has been calling climate change a hoax and a conspiracy for years, though. His "Chinese Hoax" tweet was in 2012. Furthermore, wasn't his entire schtick that he was a "political outsider" who "tells it like it is" and doesn't play party politics?
how vaguely good

"wtf i love affirmative action now"

The excuse you will get is that he was laying his groundwork in 2012 and building a rapport with the Republican base he would court for 2016 but all of this is a red herring to the fact that nothing he has done seems to indicate that he doesn't believe climate change is a big enough deal for the United States to make policy commitments to combat.
All the women in STEM that I know basically say great now quit destroying our jobs by cutting funding for federal administrations that are often the only route for science careers like the EPA, NOAA, NASA, etc.

There are a lot of science disciplines which your two only job opportunities are either working for a University or working for a government administration.

The Republican party is more open to the idea than Trump has historically been by his own words.

See this is why I'm skeptical of this.
Yay, something relatively decent to come from this administration, but at the same time - it's kind of shit.
The way I read it was he's essentially forcing NASA to send people out to schools, just NASA, nowhere else. And with all the "this department sucks, no funding" or shutting them down, I get the feeling the people from NASA going around isn't going to be paid for by the government.
And I feel like it's forcing because of the way this is worded.
The INSPIRE Act directs NASA to promote STEM fields to women and girls, and encourage women to pursue careers in aerospace. The law gives NASA three months to present two Congressional committees with its plans for getting staff -- think astronauts, scientists and engineers -- in front of K-12 girls studying STEM.
That's exactly what it is. NASA has to prove to Congress how it is going to spend the money already earmarked for this enterprise that benefits strictly women.
If a Democrat (dare say, a female!) president had signed this people would be livid, and not just people on the right. But with Trump the bar has been set so low that you just have shrug and say "Good job I guess".
so whats the right's stance on affirmative action? youd think trump would be totally opposed to something like this
so whats the right's stance on affirmative action? youd think trump would be totally opposed to something like this
your mistake was assuming the american right has consistent principles at all

It doesn't sound like affirmative action, just promoting women in STEM with sort of a PR campaign, which IMO is the right way to do it. Address the cultural paradigms which ACTUALLY keep women out of STEM instead of just giving them preferential treatment in university admissions and employment opportunities.

That would be good if they were given actual budget for that, and also if the adminstration wasn't cutting the very jobs they are encouraging women to train for.
You know its great and all that they're doing this, but if anything you ought to pipe it directly to Dept of Edu where said education to get into STEM courses is needed.
There's too many stories of kids legitimately wanting to do some career in STEM but their school system is absolute dogshit either due to lack of funding or just shit course opportunities.

"Everybody's gotta be covered, that's a very un-Republican thing for me to say." - Trump on Healthcare reform.
Tick tock, Republicunts...

Is it actually made clear anywhere that this is hurting NASA's budget and that they aren't given any money for travel? Other than that I agree the administration is awful for their anti-science stances, I just mean in general I think the idea of the government supporting a cultural shift rather than affirmative action is a good idea.
