Ok heres the deal - I graduated from uni in the summer of 2009 were I did 3D animation & special effects however kinda regretting of going now before it was too late. I dont know if it was me that wasnt very good or the course I was in wasnt very good, nevertheless after I left uni i tried looking for a job in animation for like 5 months but never got anything from it so I reverted back in working back to my old job in a fast food place cos I had stuff to pay. Anyway 2 years forward I still havent got my "dream job yet" and im still working in the same job in the fast food and pretty much lost my motivation this past year, sort of until now. I told myself to get back to what i want to do and really give it another go. I just need to build my portfolio up again and honestly it has been awhile since ive done anything so pretty much need to teach and remind myself again on to do pretty much what ive learnt. For the next few months im going to dedicate all my spare time working on my own personal projects and hopefully i could share it with you too because it does motivate me when someone say something about my stuff either its a good or bad comment about my work. But Im determined to make it this time around and I would like to work in the VFX areas hopefully. At the moment I am working on creating characters once i build it, I will have on attempt on building the rig, animations, composite and lay it out in a real environment. Pretty much the whole process of production. Anyway thanks for reading and hopefully check out some of my work and let me know what you think? Thanks This is PART ONE of the character im following and building at the moment. So far ive only build the leg, will work on the arms and hands this weekend when I have my days off of work. Cool. Seems like you got a fairly firm grasp around Maya. What is it you really want to become though? A character artist or an animator? I suggest putting all your focus into either one of those instead of spreading your potential over two subjects.
you made me want to start learning modelling. it's cool but the drawing side is what hinders your ability to be great. Find yourself some buddy to do concepts for you so your models can become good. [editline]31st July 2011[/editline] also that uni must've been pmuch shit if they let you graduate like that.
This really looks good, i like it. Why don't you go at those sites where they hire modellers?
Would you mind showing us what portfolio you had when you first tried to job hunt?
Oh boy, you went to school for that? No offense man but that's some seriously beginner stuff. I recreated models identically from videogames I played when I was a freshmen/sophmore in highschool. And even then I knew I that a career in that industry is too risky, so I bailed. I feel sorry for you man.
alright i've got a few probably dumb sounding questions but Is there a big difference between Maya 2011 and 3Dsmax and which one would you recommend starting out with first?
You can never be to expert in this industry you always going to feel like a beginner no matter what because the technology changes so rapidly like theres new tools for everything that comes out evey month. So you always going to be learning, but one thing I am is I don't give up. I understand success doesn't come over night but you just need to keep doing and working on what you want to do. I am just modelling this character just for practice after I do this I'm going to start my own design and project. Like i mentioned its been like nearly a year since ive done anything properly. -I totally agree my uni was bullcrap! but i dont blame them entirely I blame myself too for not giving 100% of my all. lol - I dont think theres much difference between Maya and Max, Ive never use Max so i cant say if its easy or hard to use. With MAYA it is aim towards making high end Animations for commercials and films. Like the remake of War of the worlds those tripods were built and animated in Maya. I think MAX is aim towards more for games development. Anyway I've put up PART TWO which i did yesterday and it is the Arm. PART TWO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_--NVKoFank This is the film I helped made in my 2nd year of uni -- Also thanks for the feedbacks im always humble on what people say. Cheers
Did you go to uni in the 90's by any chance? I really wonder what kind of work you could do if we threw a better artist at you.
Being an artist is not only about the techniques, there are a lot of artists on the industry that use old techniques(box-modeling and so on..) plus a couple of new (using zbrush to deail for instance) and it works just fine. You can learn the most important techniques quite fast, but that's not important in most the cases. You as an artist, the most important thing you need to learn is how to think like an artist, you have to learn how to see, you have to challenge yourself, you must pay attention to details you must know when you made a crappy job and you should work to find out how to improve that crappy job and so on.. You should also frequent places where professional 3D artists post their work (http://www.cgsociety.org/), use them as inspiration and always aim to do something as good as that. This is just my opinion and some people may disagree with me.
