(CNN) - Pope Francis on Tuesday called for big changes in the Roman Catholic Church – including at the very top – saying he knows it will be a messy business but he expects his flock to dive in feet first.
"I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its own security," the Pope said in a major new statement.
"I do not want a Church concerned with being at the center and then ends by being caught up in a web of obsessions and procedures," Francis added.
Man this guy should have been Pope years ago
This guy's brilliant.
Well, Pope Francis definitely seems like the Pope the Church deserves, AND the one it needs right now.
That's right; BatPope.
By contrast, in "Evangelii" Francis repeats his calls for Catholics to stop "obsessing" about culture war issues and enforcing church rules, and to focus more on spreading the Gospel, especially to the poor and marginalized.
This guy has to be a reformer. I can't see otherwise.
Rick Santorum's pissed.
Rick Santorum's pissed.
That Smug Bastard.
Jesuits FTW
Jesus would be proud
Please tell me what kind of "changes" do you people expect....
Please tell me what kind of "changes" do you people expect....
I don't expect much, but I hope for a lot.
I can't help but feel concerned for the Pope's safety.
He seems to be a genuinely great person. I really like to think that he is.
I can't help but feel concerned for the Pope's safety.
Don't worry, ole Ben probably taught him the force lightning.
I don't expect much, but I hope for a lot.
Sorry, I meant what KIND of changes. They could be of one kind and a lot, or of another kind and none.
The Pope has a lot of balls to do so many radical changes at once. And for once, it's his balls instead of others.
I don't know. Sounds to me like they are trying to brainwash even more impoverished people. Not like it matters, as long as they actually do some good.
Im not even Catholic and I still feel that he is better than us, not greedy or an asshole or anything, this guys great
I don't know. Sounds to me like they are trying to brainwash even more impoverished people. Not like it matters, as long as they actually do some good.
The key difference between now and before Pope Francis, though, is that they aren't any longer trying to brainwash impoverished people into forgoing contraception, developing prejudice against gays, and other irrational practices. Francis' message is to actually convey the positive points of the Bible as any true Jesuit should, rather than do nothing but preach hate and disdain for modern culture and scientific advances such as the Church did before he came along.
To be honest, I kind of fear for Pope Francis. He's doing a lot of unprecedented stuff all at once, and it seems dangerous.

Ooohhp, here it comes, the "he's still the pope he's exactly the same he's playing you fuck the pope fuck catholics fuck religion fuck the police" posts
I can't help but feel concerned for the Pope's safety.
At least the Pope seems to have a loyal security force that actually like him (judging by how much they smile around him, and that's really rare for security)

Pope Francis best pope all years
The article doesn't address it, but the Pope apparently also denounced trickle-down economics today, and criticized it for the growing economic inequality it's creating. He also talked about ongoing efforts to get a larger female presence in the Church.

their shiny teeth won't reflect sniper fire from a rooftop, and i doubt that glass box will save him from anyone who actually wants to murder him

He's probably developed force-field technology by now.

Being somebody that nobody wants to murder is the best preventative measure.

Okay wow, sniper fire? I doubt anyone hates him THAT much.
Besides the rooftops are most likely secured by the Papal forces/local police force, the route for the Pope-Mobile is known after-all.

You can't just assume that because of past actions in the catholic church. This is a new guy, and a new agenda. If anything, what he seems to be doing now is a step away from brainwashing the impoverished with idiotic ideas (homophobia, etc), and honestly, this guy looks like the most promising pope seen in a while.
I met him in person during the World Youth Day 2013. He's a great man for sure.
Ooohhp, here it comes, the "he's still the pope he's exactly the same he's playing you fuck the pope fuck catholics fuck religion fuck the police" posts
Nah, you're mixing me with other people.
MInd you I was raised catholic and I still go to a catholic school.
Many people here -as I have said a thousand times- don't know or misunderstand what the Church says.
For example, here:
and scientific advances such as the Church did before he came along.
The Church didn't preach hate and disdain for scientific advances. It preached hate (?) and disdain for certain scientific advances such as embrionary stem cells.
How could it preach hate and disdain for scientific advances...having this?:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontifical_Academy_of_Sciences
And they won't change jack about abortion and contraception.
condoms maybe. German bishop has already said it's not a matter of faith/dogma.
Homo marriage....waaay far fetched, but not impossible as abortion.
what he seems to be doing now is a step away from brainwashing the impoverished with idiotic ideas (homophobia, etc), and honestly, this guy looks like the most promising pope seen in a while.
492. What are the principal sins against chastity?
2351-2359
2396
Grave sins against chastity differ according to their object: adultery, masturbation, fornication, pornography, prostitution, rape, and homosexual acts. These sins are expressions of the vice of lust. These kinds of acts committed against the physical and moral integrity of minors become even more grave.
This is taught by all priests and fathers all around the world. I mean, wtf.
And look what happened to this guy, he got "fired":

"brainwashing the impoverished"
omg

Also this. If he does get murdered by someone (hope not, love the guy), pretty much a cop crusade will be called to find the asshole who ordered it.
I think that's enough of a deterrent, if somebody doesn't like him, the rest of the country and pretty much most of the world does. Too much of a risk.
