Just some links I found on building your own guitar pickups. If you've got the tools, it's apparently quite easy, simple, and yields good sounding results.

looks like a fun project, I hope to make one this weekend. Even though the thing could look like some ghetto rig, if anybody makes cracks about them, you can always just say "Well, I made mine, unlike you, dicknose." At any rate, It'll be fun to experiment with different shapes, wire sizes, and coil thickness so I can get some different sounds.

It's always worth a try. If you already have some fairly basic tools (dremel, drill, hand saw, file) you won't be expending much (if any) money on making them.
