You best turn down your volume, it gets pretty damn loud.

In Utah today, NASA completed a successful test of the world's largest, most powerful solid rocket motor, the DM-2. For two minutes, the motor, designed to provide up to 3.6 million pounds of thrust, roaringly fired a column of flame, while some 760 instruments monitored its every aspect. Best to turn down your speakers before the countdown in this video hits zero.
Before the motor was fired, the engineers chilled it to 40 degrees below zero, for additional stress testing. It reportedly passed every test. The motor is intended to be used in the heavy-lift rocket segment of the Constellation program that NASA has slated for 2015.
Awesome!
How did they hold it in place I wonder.
I can just imaging a giant pyro carrying this around.
Mrph mrph mrph mrph!
Was reading about this in the papers, the minute I read it I wanted to see a video.
Also I wasn't aware the rocket testing facility was in Utah.
[editline]11:29PM[/editline]
Also I heart it was five stages, I wanted to see some parts flinging off :frown:
Cool, I thought they abandoned the Constellation program.
It's like a giant bomb has gone off if you look at the amount of smoke :monocle:
What's the dimensions of this thing? I keep thinking than this is no bigger than 1 or 2 meters
:psyboom:
What's the dimensions of this thing? I keep thinking than this is no bigger than 1 or 2 meters
It's like 100 metres long
When you consider how much energy is being forced out the back of that thing, the size really starts to seem tiny.
Screw rockets, this would make a great weapon on the front of a giant tank.
FIRE FOR ALL!
Screw rockets, this would make a great weapon on the front of a giant tank.
FIRE FOR ALL!
And the tank goes flying backwards
How the hell did they keep that from not moving when it's generating that amount of push.
This test have certainly modified the rotation speed of the earth.
This test have certainly modified the rotation speed of the earth.
Now i want to place 100 of these in a line next to eachother and fire them all at the same time
Can you imagine being that little lizard that was just crawling by, minding its own business....
Looks like NASA is getting better at getting things right from day 1, Anyone ever see the Shuttle Enterprise after its first flight test? After it landed it was missing a LOT of its heat tiles, and that just launched from the top of a 747
if i could have this in any game i would win instantly.
Well there goes millions of dollars.
To SCIENCE!
Rockets just doesn't look quite as awesome when they are strapped down. :frown:

it does look a ridiculously large flame thrower dosen't it
How the hell did they keep that from not moving when it's generating that amount of push.
It's not that hard to keep something from moving.
It's stopping something once it has momentum that is difficult. Strap it down and put a heavy structure in front of it and it isn't going to go anywhere any time soon. Give it some wiggle room and things get difficult, because it's hard to stop something that large once it gets moving.
Was the ground glowing afterwards? :O

Double check.
One of the awesome things about living in Utah, not only do you get to see some awesome military hardware rolling around on the freeway, but you get to go see things like this.
Our clouds will blot out the sun.

The Solid Fuel Rocket
-Fuel capacity multiplied x1000
-Instantly vaporizes everything
-No Random Crits
-No Airblast
Perfectly balanced!
