James Valentine, a 21-year-old from Pennsylvania, was part of a crew pruning trees on Monday afternoon when his chainsaw suddenly kicked back and the blade sliced into him. His co-workers brought him down from the tree and he was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Emergency workers removed the motor of the saw, but left the blade in Mr Valentine's neck and shoulder to prevent additional blood loss, said Christine Toevs, the trauma surgeon who operated on him. "He was appropriately upset, but his death was not imminent," said Dr Toevs, who serves as medical director of the trauma ICU at Allegheny General Hospital. "He didn't lose control, he wasn't crying uncontrollably, and he was holding still as best he could." When he was admitted, Mr Valentine was still able to speak. "He didn't say very much except to say his name was James," Dr Toevs said. "We certainly don't ask him, 'How do you feel about having a chainsaw stuck in your neck?'" Fortunately for Mr Valentine, the blade missed his carotid artery and most of the damage was to his shoulder muscle, Dr Toevs said. He is expected to make a full recovery and might be released from hospital today. He will, however, need several weeks to completely heal. Mr Valentine works for Adler Tree Service in Gibsonia. Dominic Migliozzi, the owner of the company, called the rescue "amazing".
Source
That fucking headline.
"He didn't lose control, he wasn't crying uncontrollably, and he was holding still as best he could."
"What?... Oh this.. yea its just a chainsaw. No big deal"
"What?... Oh this.. yea its just a chainsaw. No big deal"
Shock and adrenaline.
"He was appropriately upset, but his death was not imminent,"
I wonder how upset is appropriately upset exactly :v:
[neck]Chainsaw[/neck]
That's gonna leave one badass scar
That's gonna leave one badass scar
As well as a fool-proof way to pick up chicks at the bar.
Fuck sake, this happens just as I'm about to start working with a chainsaw in a month or so with my dad.
Don't chainsaws have a failsafe mechanism in case they kick back like that? Mine has a switch over the handle so the upward force deactivates it.
Don't chainsaws have a failsafe mechanism in case they kick back like that? Mine has a switch over the handle so the upward force deactivates it.
Yes, all chainsaws have (multiple) safeties but it's not foolproof. If he had his front hand off to the side of the saw, his wrist wouldn't contact the brake (the large lever over the handle) or alternatively, he could have lost his front grip entirely when the saw kicked or it might have kicked hard enough that even though the brake engaged and stopped the chain from spinning on the blade, it was still travelling with enough force to lodge it in his body.. The last one is probably the most likely since he's still alive and all
I wonder how upset is appropriately upset exactly :v:
Enough that you're unhappy with the chainsaw in your neck but not so much that you get angry and start moving around and complicate things.

For a second I thought the chain was his spine.
For a second I thought the chain was his spine.
For a second I pondered the possibilities of what a tree surgeon would be.
That's insane how the chain's come loose and flung all through his chest. Hot damn.
Fortunately for Mr Valentine, the blade missed his carotid artery and most of the damage was to his shoulder muscle, Dr Toevs said.
Goddamn are you a lucky bastard.
they better incinerate him when he dies, if he comes back as a zombie he'd be the final boss
I'm unsure about them concept of them leaving the chainsaw chain in his neck. Those things are covered in grease and oil and sawdust and all sorts of shit. There's no way in hell they can leave that in there without some sort of infection. Did they not take it out at all or did they wait until later or what? The article doesn't really touch on it.
Oh man, I was kinda interested in tree surgery. I still am though :v:

They're probably going to pump him full of immune suppressants and antibiotics to negate such a thing for the most part, but such as it is, sometimes you will have to remove foreign objects in stages or bit by bit because if too much blood loss occurs at once, the shock may be largely irreversible, leading rapidly to death.
Wow those quotes of the conversation made it sound like he died slowly and happily..
Looks like he's gonna need a surgeon.
