I recommend a D3s because it is very durable and has a chunky grip so they have to excuse to why they dropped it (hey neckstrap too) loljk I recommend this http://sclick.net/cool%20gadgets/best-top-boys-toys-gadget/23/best-top-new-fun-toys-gadgets-for-kids-kidizoom-digital-camera-front.png

wat
In my opinion I wouldn't trust a 5-9 year old with a camera in the first place.
thank god, I was looking for a good camera for my 5-9 year old!
as you can see, the majority of facepunch members are living with children aged 5-9, so this is a great help thanks

Good idea op. I'll pool together money for my nephews birthday with other people to buy him a D3s as his first camera However as he is too young to even understand anything I can "look after" it for him. EXCELLENT [editline]16th October 2011[/editline] In all seriousness there is that camera which is compact and hard wearing as fuk. Forgot what it was though
I'd recommend something like a Panasonic FT10 or Fuji XP30 for the 8-12 age category. Something that can take some bumps and knocks and survive an accidental swim. [editline]17th October 2011[/editline] They're also both on the cheaper end of the tough camera scale.

So very useful
My 5 year old cousin takes really nice pictures, but kids arent really going to need anything but a point and shoot.
let my little cousin handle my dslr, he then tries to pry open the flash with his fingers cringe
The Olympus Tough line has cameras that resist water for 10 meters and falls of 2 meters or so That's what you should aim for, everything-proof cameras with simple controls
I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the brilliant thread OP
I'm not so sure about your suggestion, OP, looks like that camera is made by vtech. What if it kicks in when the child is holding it??
Something without moving parts, such as a moving optical lens zoom. kids love playing with stuff that moves. preferably something with a grip.

fuck, that is a beasting lens
Something to see if they are into photography, a cheap digital camera (preferably used) or for now buy them some disposable cameras.
fuck, that is a beasting lens
What? Also that's my hand :v: [editline]31st October 2011[/editline] Also something probably from a children's company or cheap as fuck. Wouldn't want something breaking since they drop it.
fuck, that is a beasting lens
beasting sounds like something I hear 12 year olds say in my street "dude, that dubstep is BEASTING"
well here in glasgow we describe good things as "beast" so it's a derivation of that
Good sly edit there, cueball.
I recommend this.
as you can see, the majority of facepunch members are living with children aged 5-9, so this is a great help thanks
or maybe they are 5-9 year olds themselves
