"Please visit Yahoo! Search for all of your searching needs."
That's all Yahoo wrote on Friday afternoon as it lumped in the news that it was killing off AltaVista on 8 July with word that it will also axe 11 other products that no longer matter to the company.
Jay Rossiter, the vice president in charge of platforms, said the moves will free Yahoo to streamline its efforts and thus "continue to focus on creating beautiful products that are essential to you every day".
Fair enough. Yahoo needs to husband its resources and devote them to projects that matter. Truth be told, AltaVista, once the best of the bunch in the era before internet search meant Google and three guys named Moe, has unfortunately been irrelevant for quite some time. In fact, the biggest news about its date with the guillotine may be that it was still alive after all these years. On Twitter, most folks reacted the way Mitch Kapor did when he wrote "Yahoo shutting down AltaVista. I, for one, profoundly surprised it was still alive. Ave atque vale." (That's Latin for "hail and farewell".)
Danny Sullivan, the doyen of digital search, nicely chronicled the history of a search engine that most owners seemingly couldn't wait to unload after acquiring it. The list included the likes of Digital Equipment, Compaq, CMGI, Overture and Yahoo. Hardly a harbinger of success when your corporate parent's name changes faster than the identity of the person sitting in the White House.
RIP Altavista.
Back in the day your video search function made many a young man happy.
So, how long until AOL finally dies too?
AltaVista, baby
To be fair, Altavista was long under even before when Yahoo acquired babelfish and the subsequent emergence of Google Translate
rip babelfish and altavista mp3 search, you were useful
I think the last time I ever really used AltaVista was around 1996 or so, it's been a while. Surprised Yahoo didn't kill it earlier.
Damn, I used altavista image, video and mp3 search tons. RIP.
I'm still sad about Angelfire and Geocities. All that web 1.0 history lost forever. So many pages with tiled backgrounds, animated gifs and looping MIDI tracks, all gone.
altavista mp3 search was my life as a kid, damn.
r.i.p.
Babelfish used to be my sole way through surviving French lessons.
RIP AltaVista.

Don't worry my friend:

specifically,

the sad part is that he removed the midi track from DooM that used to play on that page :C
the good news is that he's still updating the site's "GUI gallery" so this site will be around for awhile.
I should warn you that he hates all things Internet Explorer, and by extension, Microsoft.
I really advise you poke around there though, you'll find lots of "Web 1.0" stuff, some even for download
Holy shit, I remember using that website like 9 years ago.

My company wholesales dial-up connections for them. Business is going rather well with them still. I see no end in sight.
Man, this thread is reminding me of my dad's old 90's era website. I miss that website.

Unfortunately none of the pictures work. That is too bad
I remember back in 7th grade (2001), my computer teacher tried to convince us AltaVista was the best search engine around. When I said google was, and argued my points, she sent me to the principal's office for being insubordinate.
