You're not the only one who missed out on dropping $1,500 for Google Glass Explorer Edition. An Australian geek, who goes by the "Evil Dead" name Ash_Williams on Australian PC hardware community forum Overclockers, doesn't have one either. So he made his own.
The hacker's version is called Flass, a combination of "fake" and "glass." It's powered by a Nokia N9 phone. The TV-out feature of the phone feeds the eye display, which is mounted on a set of real glasses using cable ties.
Ash_Williams has gone through four different versions of Flass so far.
The Australian maker got the eye display down to about the size of the real Google Glass. It uses a curved optic harvested from a Myvu Crystal 701 eye display to amplify the size of the screen when looking at it. The whole thing connects together with cables, so it's not quite as hands and cords-free at the real deal. "It looks kind of funny," the creator admits in a video demonstration.

Is everyone a hacker these days?
This is actually the proper (original) use of the word hacker: someone who "hacks things together", not someone who breaks into systems.
Hacking might be characterized as ‘an appropriate application of ingenuity’.
http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/meaning-of-hack.html
EDIT: actually, the two things are not mutually exclusive, because hacking can involve breaking into systems creatively, but as a fun prank, not for malicious purposes and not using somebody else's scripts ("script kiddy")
was it necessary to use worlds most shittiest OS Symbian?
Is everyone a hacker these days?
In the opinion of schoolteachers? Yes.
Accidentally open cmd.exe and close before doing anything? Hacking.
Turning on the smooth scrolling in chrome://flags? Hacking.
Turning the goddamn computer on yourself? Hacking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the N9 uses MeeGo, not Symbian. Probably even shitter.

But the guy in the OP actually did "hack something together" in a creative way. So I would definitely call him a hacker.
Sorry, just whining about shitty computer literacy in schools and school IT.
This is pretty cool. Still a bit.. duct tape-y, but it shows that the concept can be accomplished without paying out the ass for google glass.
They said the consumer version will be priced around high-end phones, it was just this explorer edition that was $1500.
This looks even better than google glass itself.
Meego is what Lagdroid should have been, pure Linux.
I can't say that Android is particularly laggy on anything but the lowest of low end hardware.
Pop up an FPS counter on the Nexus 7.
How do you do it, I'm curious.
Meego is what Lagdroid should have been, pure Linux.
Every thread I swear it, do you really need to mention it in every single thread to do with mobile devices even if it isn't to do with Android? This should be a thread about some cool ass thing some Australian guy made, not about how "laggy and crap" android is.
He should make a list of where he got the pieces for this so other people can try his method.
he zipped a computer screen to his glasses, now it is Fake google glass. so damn sensational.
Turning on the smooth scrolling in chrome://flags? Hacking.
Thanks, I didn't know about this! I'm glad to be a hacker now too.
The term hacking is not exclusive to fiddling with computer systems.
The term "hacker" has derailed so much people can't tell this is legit hacking any more.
