• Trump to ask for $716 billion in defense spending in 2019 budget: U.S. officials
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to ask for $716 billion in defense spending in the 2019 budget he is to unveil next month, two U.S. officials said on Friday, representing a 7 percent increase over the 2018 budget. The $716 billion would cover the Pentagon’s annual budget as well as spending on ongoing wars and the maintenance of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. The 2018 budget still has not passed through Congress, the U.S. officials said on condition of anonymity. One of the officials said the request would closely follow the priorities unveiled by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Friday in the National Defense Strategy. Mattis put countering China and Russia at the center of the new National Defense Strategy. The Pentagon’s unclassified, 11-page version of the National Defense Strategy did not provide details on how the shift towards countering China and Russia would be carried out, but defense spending requests were expected to reflect that aim. The U.S. military’s competitive edge has eroded “in every domain of warfare” Mattis said, partly because of inconsistent funding. Congress voted on Monday to end a three-day U.S. government shutdown, approving the latest short-term funding bill as Democrats accepted promises from Republicans for a broad debate later on the future of young illegal immigrants. The Washington Post published the figures for the president’s budget request earlier on Friday afternoon.
Reuters.
If Europe is going to "pay their part" for NATO now, why do we still need to spend all that money?
Rampant, bloated military spending combined with fervent nationalism? Now where have I seen this before...
I liked the interview that the outgoing chief of the nuclear stockpile did.
"We're pretty much at capacity in terms of people, although we're hiring more. We're pretty much at capacity in terms of the materials that we need to do this work. And pretty much at capacity in terms of hours in the day at our facilities to do this work," Frank Klotz said in an interview with Defense News.
even if trump got what he wanted, we can't start up another nuke buildup because we're already over capacity due to Obama era modernization programs that are in progress
I can't even fathom that amount of money
Post 9/11 George W. Bush?
wasnt that a fraction of this amount?
How much of this is going to be thrown into the trash
Okay, so where is that military spending going? Surely it's going somewhere useful. As the already insane military budget is. Surely all the military presence the US has in the world justifies and certainly accounts for all the money. I'm sorry but I have a feeling there are people who are benefitting immensely from the US throwing money at the military. That's just a feeling though.
Oooh i know, spend it on a uniform redesign! Im think something with red bars in a pinwheel formation would look cool.
pls no the Army just adopted two new uniform sets, I don't wanna have to go through that shit again for at least another 10 years [editline]26th January 2018[/editline]
Okay, so where is that military spending going? Surely it's going somewhere useful.
new chock blocks and drip pans for every vehicle in the Army these are critical components to any military operation
pls no the Army just adopted two new uniform sets, I don't wanna have to go through that shit again for at least another 10 years
no sorry its a new uniform design every week now, that way the enemy will never know who you are
like the nation isn't already plagued by wealth and economic problems just throw everything into military spending :downs:
So we can waste $716 billion on this but just can't afford something like free healthcare?
The Republicans can waste 716 billion on this and 1.5 trillion on rich people, but had to be dragged kicking and screaming to give poor kids healthcare at a fraction of the cost of either of these.
wasnt that a fraction of this amount?
In terms of percent GDP this still isn't as high as during the lows of the Cold War.
I can't even fathom that amount of money
that's why i love this website http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html so about 3/4 of that. that's how much money is getting tossed at shit like this.
Time to buy some more $3000 lug nuts.
dont we spend more on military than every other country ever like why is this even a thing being said
Only thing I can think of is that spending in the military is inconsistent in that large sums of money get wasted on projects that ultimately get scrapped, or money is invested in things that the military doesn't need. Whereby it would be better to actually cut military spending and commit to projects and objective improvements, rather than the current waste that occurs.
Post 9/11 George W. Bush?

wasnt that a fraction of this amount?
Here's where it gets interesting: The budget back then was "only" ~$460 billion(accounting for the Iraq War phase, later it would creep up to $600 billion), but it was at the time 20% of the budget. The 2016-2017 defense budgets were $580-$582 billion, but they would comprise only roughly 16% of the budget. Which just goes to show how batshit insane proposing an almost 150 billion dollar budget increase would be. It'd raise the defense budget proportion back to the Bush-era large scale counter insurgency buildup and the Obama-era troop surge in Afghanistan. That's insane. There's no reason to authorize such a budget increase after you've already built up your entire military, unless you're actively considering fighting a long conflict. Which he just might be thinking about.
dont we spend more on military than every other country ever like why is this even a thing being said
We also have the biggest military by far on the planet. I think even larger than the next 3 countries combined?
We also have the biggest military by far on the planet. I think even larger than the next 3 countries combined?
There are multiple countries that have larger unit counts than the US.
Imagine what we would do if even 200 billion out of that amount would be put into infrastructure or education Fuck this country's military funding boner
We also have the biggest military by far on the planet. I think even larger than the next 3 countries combined?
By tonnage, our Navy is not only the largest, but larger than the next eleven countries combined.
By tonnage, our Navy is not only the largest, but larger than the next eleven countries combined.
I looked that up cause I wanted to reference it and this website made me laugh. I honestly dont know if they're serious https://www.globalfirepower.com/navy-ships.asp see below
There are multiple countries that have larger unit counts than the US.
Including North Korea I think.
Including North Korea I think.
The US strength is in the Navy and everything else being heavily mechanized. Our projection is huge, and the "strength per unit", if that is a valid measurement, is much greater than pretty much any other military on the planet. North Korea or China might have 1-2 million more boots on the ground than we do, but we also have way more capability than they do to deal with being outnumbered in such a way.
Imagine what we would do if even 200 billion out of that amount would be put into infrastructure or education Fuck this country's military funding boner
Na, we're gonna get billions from private industry, they really really wanna invest in infrastructure that doesn't directly raise them capital.

Jesus Christ. The military has been complaining about how they already have enough shit, they're basically sitting on a money pile doing nothing with it. [editline]28th January 2018[/editline]
Including North Korea I think.
Its literally patrol vessels, these things have at most 1 to 2 guns max on them and are meant to deal with drug cartels and border patrols. Not open conflict.
