A radical Islamist politician in Egypt has been convicted in absentia of violating public decency after police found him fondling a woman in a car.
Ali Wanis was sentenced to a year in prison for the incident and six months for abusing the policemen. The woman involved got a six month jail term.
Both can avoid prison by posting bail.
Mr Wanis became an MP for the Salafist Nour party earlier this year, but parliament was dissolved in June after a court said the election was invalid.
'Niece'
Police officers told the Misdemeanour Court in Tukh, outside Cairo, that they had found Mr Wanis caressing a fully-veiled woman student who was sitting on his lap in his car while it was parked on an agricultural road near the town last month.
When they knocked on his window asking to see his driving licence and car registration, the Islamist called them "sons of dogs", they added.
Mr Wanis denied violating public decency, claiming that he had pulled the car over to assist his ill niece. But the police said he was not her uncle.
On Saturday, the court found Mr Wanis guilty of committing an obscene act on a main road and contempt of police, and sentenced him to jail.
The Islamist, whose whereabouts are unknown, was tried in absentia and is allowed a retrial. The woman, who has been in custody for about a month, has the right to appeal.
Mr Wanis can avoid jail by paying 1,000 Egyptian pounds ($165) in bail, while the woman can also do so by paying 500 Egyptian pounds ($82).
Earlier this year, the Nour party was forced to apologise after another of its MPs resigned after apparently lying over whether he had plastic surgery. He said his bandaged face was the result of a car-jacking.
I'm picturing like the stereotypical beer gut pervert who was burping and scratching his ass and such as he did all of this.
I know it's Egypt but that is a bullshit jail sentence for feeling a girl up
hey they never said it wasn't consensual, and they never posted her age.
in america they might have been able to just wave the cop away and go about their business (depending on how bored the cop was)

Basically, for all intents and purposes, it's a fine
Why did he try to get out of it by saying she was his niece
Um

Isn't that more relation of sons of bitches?

more like sons of bitches, thats how things work here in egypt.
Isn't that more relation of sons of bitches?
If i knew they said in arabic i could clarify for you.
The woman is getting a 6 month jail term as well?!
Isn't that more relation of sons of bitches?
This is an Islamic country. Dogs and pigs are seen as revolting creatures. I'm pretty sure it's a bit meaner than "sons of bitches".

a bitch is a female dog though
I meant "sons of bitches" in the context of an American saying it to another American.

Well "sons of bitches" literally means "sons of female dogs" in English. So it's essentially exactly the same. There's just no specific word for female dog in Arabic so it's literally the exact same insult.
But, as an insult, it carries more weight in middle eastern countries

Everything carries more negative weight in Middle Eastern countries.
Except insulting Jesus.
Never give thumbs up to an Afghan man.
uh muslims respect jesus as a prophet but not the son of god, they speak a small eulogy for his death every time they mention his name, just as they do Muhammad
Why did the girl get sentenced.

That's not exactly true. In Arabic, calling someone a dog is mainly insulting due to the fact (like Elecbullet said) that a dog is considered dirty. We say (excuse if I spell it wrong) "Yebnil Kelb" which means "Your father is a dog". If you say "Ya Kelb" to someone, it's basically saying "You Dog". We have a word for bitch in Arabic, I'm not sure if it's bitch as in a female dog, or just a word that means bitch, but it's pronounced "Gawad".
So yeah, calling someone a dog is insulting in Arab countries due to the fact that dogs are dirty creatures (or at least Arabs consider them to be dirty).
