This guy knows his shit. Glad t his topic is being raised
This guy knows his shit. Glad t his topic is being raised
And this is why I respect Adam Sessler, he knew his shit about the game industry when he was on G4 and he knows it now. Seriously him being on G4 was holding him back because the rest of the people on that channel didn't know shit about games, specially Morgan Webb and Olivia Munn.
I'm sick and tired of the backlash against Anita Sarkeesian being spun as nothing but a bunch of "angry misogynistic basement dwelling nerds". How about the fact that she never bothers to highlight the many good female characters in games? How about the fact that she never even plays the games she criticizes (go watch her Bayonetta video that she took down from her account). Or that she blocks comments or controls them, just so that she can control her image? Or that she publicly slandered Team ICO on Twitter, calling a classic title "shit" and "misogynist"?

Takes a ton of money off white knights and has yet to put a video out. Judging by her bayonetta video she's fucking terrible at it actually researching or doing anything right about it. using her name now is essentially used as a Marketing tool or PR damage control that is hard to tear down because of the white knight bullshittery that is happening in the industry right now which essentially makes it PR suicide if you try. women should seriously have a better public figure if they want to have actual change in the gaming industy than Tumblr/feminism idiots and anita. I like this guy, he's pretty switched on. I do however believe that the segregation and disrespect for women in this industry is limited to time. It's an ever expanding industry, for both genders. It seems far more socially acceptible to be a "gamer" nowadays, 10 years ago I used to be called a nerd and a geek (In the derogatory sense of the words) just because I enjoyed playing games a lot. Yet now, it's almost the norm for the younger generation to play all day everyday. What I'm trying to say is give it another 10 years and it'll be socially accepted - and there will be more women employed in the industry, alongside being a consumer. There will always be that one guy who dislikes it, but I feel it's only a matter of time until it all disappears. There will probably be less 'sexualising' of the gender too.

morgan actually knows her shit as well, had only a brief stint in modelling, while olivia is all about her tits and deep throating sausages on strings and TEE HEE I'M HAVING ~*~SEX~*~ WITH MY CO-HOST??? -_^^^^^^^^ i felt so embarrassed for everybody every time olivia munn was on screen on g4. anyway sessler pretty much shares my opinion and i'm glad he's saying it, because he's pretty influential in some ways, and his voice travels so far. i just want somebody who truly gives a shit and truly knows what theyre talking about to take action on this subject, someone much more than sarkeesian.

There are plenty of very talented and smart women in the gaming industry both on the journalism and development side, but YOU only get to see the ones that "fuck up."
morgan is great, olivia is an actor
Then do explain why Webb took time off the show to do Maxim shoots in her underpants and two TV pilots. The difference between Webb and Munn and Webb is Webb can actually play video games on the spot. She's still not representative of any kind of force within interactive entertainment, and she's hasn't done much actual journalism.
TBH I would focus more on how women are really not handled equally in terms of employment instead of going with the absolutely banal issue of not having role models in gaming. Because there isn't a male counterpart to them to begin with. For crying out loud, most of the main characters of the biggest video game franchises have absolutely no background, or redeeming factors to them. They serve as a vehicle for a story not for a way to convey any moral undertones. You don't question a single god damn order you're given in by the HUD prompt in games like Call of Duty, Battlefield or Medal of Honor. You don't get to analyze the morality of Mario, Sonic and Rayman beat the living shit out of the inhabitants of every world they're in for their own personal gain. You're only advancing a damn story, no need to think that through. Hell, why are they even worried about having sexualized female characters when every single male main character in a game is as vain and vapid as the female ones. The only properly ugly main characters are usually demons or monsters, and by a general rule all the main characters are in an impossible state of body fitness, and seemingly have absolutely no guilt out of killing people, or monsters, or whatever they are killing, stealing, taking or otherwise destroying within the game. Does this make game developers horrible people, having all these as horrible people as their main characters, fuck no. You don't criticize Hollywood for having actors playing heroes when the actors themselves are addicted to all sorts of drugs, or for being involved in crime, or whatever the hell actors do. That's because in the context of the movie, and what you're trying to convey with it, it doesn't matter at fucking all. It's a face in the screen. It's a vehicle. It's flair, it's meant to keep you focused long enough so the story gets through your head and you can amaze yourself at what you're seeing. This is why main characters aren't fat, ugly, generic, or boring. Because if they were entirely featureless, it would become indifferent from everyday life, and stop being entertaining. It seriously DOES piss me off when women claim there are no role models in gaming. Why are you fucking looking for role models in video games, or movies, or comics, or books? Look around you, there's at least half a world better than you at something, and all you gotta do is talk to them and improve yourself, and get better. And not wait for someone to make you better. The idiotic belief that we need to shield people from emotions, or that we need to necessarily teach them some morals is just flat out unnatural. You learn, or you don't learn, and you learn whatever you want to.

But that a lot of the backlash has been in extremely poor taste, which is pretty true, it's hard to argue that while a tiny minority have come forward with legitimate criticisms against her thesis the vast majority has been hyper-defensive video gamers calling her a cunt. I don't agree with all her points, and I find plenty of flaws in the way she sees games, and have no interest in kickstarting a campaign like the one she wants to do but that doesn't mean I can't be disgusted at the level of discourse that occurs whenever she or in general female video gamers are brought up.

Wasn't the end sum somewhere up in the millions? She could've taken time to do real research, actually go to Japan and visit team ICO, or visit any other dev and just like straight ask, "How where you thinking when you did this? Is this a fair representation of women in games?" Etc. She just bought jackload of games and made about what, 20 videos? The only thing she really would need money for were buying the games, and her initial kickstarter was like 15k? I'm more than certain she has a full-time job and taking the time to do these vids wouldn't require her to quit or anything like that. She's rich now thanks to this. That really makes me mad.
yeah we know what she did wrong, that's not the point.

Anita Sarkeesian: Faith from Mirror's Edge and Jade from Beyond Good and Evil are two of my all time favourite female characters. Both are featured as the heroic protagonists of their own games without being sexualized, objectified or otherwise reduced to their gender. I also really appreciate the fact that Chell is the star of the amazing Portal series even though she is a silent protagonist. I should note that I will be detailing examples of positive female characters throughout my Tropes vs. Women in Video Games series. I'll be providing counterexamples for each negative or stereotypical trope I cover and I'll be making an entire video focusing solely on the more positive representations of women in games.
also fyi for the people in this thread if you don't like being called a misogynistic nerd I can understand that but you have to compromise and not call anyone who disagrees with you a white knight.
