1 thing I hated, Region locking/delaying. Its so fucking annoying when I can't buy games or etc because the thing you are looking for is only for "Insert country/continent here". What's the purpose of doing so? I mean seriously, If they spread it to other parts of the world, they would be making a fucking profit. Look at the US carrier mobile phones. Oh hey, we got these cool phones, but they are US only. Wow. And not even Canada gets it. And, same goes for hulu. Oh noes you can't view a video clip because its US only! Lastly, video games. Why do you have to fucking delay a game for other parts of the world. Its so damn frustrating. This is one of the few reasons why people go torrent games. Because they want to play it. And it gets delayed 3 days later.
It's for profit. Pure and simple.
Copyright issues etc
The new youtube thing is like that, it really annoys me.
Its so that they can make you buy the same thing again and again, thats the whole idea of region locking.
Its so that they can make you buy the same thing again and again, thats the whole idea of region locking.
And you buy it again exactly why/how? Travel to another country or order it from the other country? And why would you buy it again then?
It's annoying on steam, I get the new products thing up go woo! two worlds 2! find its US only, have to wait 3 bloody months for it to be available.
Region locking a video on youtube is so pointless. It's the internet for christ's sake.
In the UK, by the time a movie is in the cinemas, it's already been out for several weeks in the US (If I remember right, Up was out in the UK after the US DVD release). I really can't get how that makes sense from any point of view.
I hate it so much too. I'd love to know why most games are released a week or so earlier in the US. It's like rubbing it in our faces. I don't see any real reason for it. I'd imagine that it just encourages piracy but there you go. Doesn't look like it will change any time soon.
It's for profit. Pure and simple.
How do you earn money by releasing vidya games a couple of days later in Europe? [editline]10th May 2011[/editline]
I'd imagine that it just encourages piracy but there you go.
This. Very much. It pisses me off when I can download a HD version of a movie before it's even in cinemas in Denmark. The entertainment industry needs to get its shit together if it wants to stop piracy.
It's been several times that some douchebag idiot spoiled a game for me because he/she got it unlocked earlier due to him/her being in the US.
Democrats for Pangaea!
It's for profit. Pure and simple.
How does stopping large numbers of people using the product create profit? When it's something like releasing a movie or game weeks then other places, or stopping half the world viewing a video, i can't think of any reason why they would do that.
I kinda understand regional blocks because of copyrights and shit, but what I don't get is regional delays for digital releases. Fuck, you don't need to ship the game or anything, just fucking let me play it. It's like selling a game only to specific people but showing it to everyone.
I had movies released here one year after it had been released in the USA.
Literally how this works in Finland: Cool, a movie I like. I guess I'll watch it online, U.S. has Netflix, we probably have something like that too. Google for 2 hours. Couple of solutions that cost like hell or are limited to a specific ISP. Now where did I install that torrent client.. Cool, a new album. Go to store. Not out for another week or so in Finland. Download better-quality rip from torrent site straight in both FLAC and MP3. Cool, a new game. Steam only, great, I love Steam. Price not converted properly, 60$ is not 60€. Fuck it, torrent. And then they fucking ask why people pirate movies, music and software. If you can't provide a service people want, get the fuck out, shut the fuck up and fix your shit.
Same goes for channels, I can't watch the military channel because its US only.

If you don't acknowledge me as a legit customer, why should I acknowledge your product as a legit purchase?

Its mainly because these big corporations are interested in purely pleasing investors. In the US the market reports tend to come in on Tuesday, so investors can be given day 1 reports on how much something sold. Whereas in the intelligent regions of the world it tends to be on Fridays.
Wow I'm so glad I'm in the US for this reason. I feel for ya guys
Some games, it makes sense that a publisher/developer would want to hold a release date for something where the servers might crash or something like that but for older games? Ridiculous.
it's because of technicalities and meaningless formalities. either way it's fucked up.
Makes me mad that I have to wait 2 months to play Operation Flashpoint: Red River, when the US and Europe versions are exactly the same. It came out already in Europe. I don't see the point of doing that, it's just stupid.

One of my Steam friends last weekend was ranting about how he couldn't buy Dead Space 2, because of Germany's restrictions (Which were apparently caused by some dudes going on a killing spree "Due to violent games"). I suggested that he send me the money and I'd buy it for him, and he did. I used Steam's brilliant gifting system to send him the game, and now he's one happy motherfucker. Plus, I got to keep the excess $1.83 (or .80 Eur, which made me laugh). Currently looking online for $1.83 products.
usually the delays are copyright issues, or arguing politicians whining over inappropriate content for the country there supposed to be serving.
Profits, legal issues, etc.
