Six dead in Dutch shopping centre shooting
(AFP) – 2 hours ago
THE HAGUE — A man opened fire on shoppers at a mall in the western Netherlands on Saturday, killing five and wounding at least 11 before turning the gun on himself, a local official said.
"There are at present six dead, including the person responsible," Bas Eenhoorn, the acting mayor of Alphen aan den Rijn, told a press conference.
Four people were seriously wounded and at least seven less badly hurt, he said.
"A man with an automatic weapon opened fire on the crowd" in the Ridderhof centre, "which was packed with families and children doing their shopping," Eenhoorn said.
He said the man had acted alone, but did not identify him. Witnesses described him as about 20 years old.
The shooting created mass panic in the mall, heightened by fears that more than one gunman was involved. Police who arrived on the scene evacuated the premises.
"It's hardly credible that our town could experience such slaughter, and on a day as beautiful as this," said Eenhoorn, adding that he was deeply shocked and offering his condolences to relatives of the victims.

Dutch gun law is typical of the Western European approach. Firearm possession is not subject to any constitutional protections, but regulated simply in the Arms and Ammunition Act (Wet Wapens en Munitie). Weapons, including firearms, are divided into four categories, and for each of the categories a certain maximum punishment is set for "voorhanden hebben" (possession), and "dragen" (carrying in public).
Only citizens who are hunters, members of shooting sports clubs or legitimate collectors may obtain licenses for firearms. In the case of shooting club members they will get a license for category III weapons (a firearms category which includes all non- full automatic firearms up to .50 cal.). Possession is generally limited to 5 firearms per license. Collectors may obtain a license for any category of firearm, including full automatic arms, but stringent rules apply to achieving collector status. There is no limit to the number of firearms a collector may obtain. Generally the collector license does not cover shooting these weapons.
Sale/Use is only for those age 18 or over. There are a few dozen gunshops in the Netherlands. Gun ownership is extremely low with only three firearms per hundred people.
Antique firearms are exempt from regulation, antique generally meaning all pre 1945 original muzzle loading firearms or firearms designed for black powder cartridges over .22 caliber, NOT being revolvers.
Firearm possession and use by the military and the police is not subject to Arms and Ammunition Act, but regulated separately.[13]
Still...With this kind of thing becoming more common, how do you know you wont be in the next 6 people killed when you go shopping or go to school?

If only they weren't, some good gun carrying citizen could have saved them :patriot:
I'm vaguely curious what weapon he used. The article lists 'Automatic weapon' but I somewhat doubt that. It's hard enough to get a full-auto gun in the US, I doubt a lone madman could acquire one there. I would guess it's probably a semi-automatic hunting rifle or something.

Full auto sub machine gun probably, most of them are really easy to mod from semi to full auto.
Sounds to me that he got the weapon illegally. Or it was modified.
I live like 500 meters away, still hearing police helicopters.
yeah but some other bad gun carier can shoot other people in an other mall more easely, allowing guns isn't gonne help, look at the united states, people have shot eachother for a parkinglot, it isn't getting saver then is it?

It depends on the gun, most are made not to be able to do this.

shootouts like these would be more common if guns were legal in the netherlands. so no thanks.

My eyes :suicide:
For any people that say more guns provokes more violence:
Lower murder rates in foreign countries prove that gun control works.
False. This is one of the favorite arguments of gun control proponents, and yet the facts show that there is simply no correlation between gun control laws and murder or suicide rates across a wide spectrum of nations and cultures. In Israel and Switzerland, for example, a license to possess guns is available on demand to every law-abiding adult, and guns are easily obtainable in both nations. Both countries also allow widespread carrying of concealed firearms, and yet, admits Dr. Arthur Kellerman, one of the foremost medical advocates of gun control, Switzerland and Israel "have rates of homicide that are low despite rates of home firearm ownership that are at least as high as those in the United States." A comparison of crime rates within Europe reveals no correlation between access to guns and crime.
After the 1997 shooting of 16 kids in Dunblane, England, the United Kingdom passed one of the strictest gun-control laws in the world, banning its citizens from owning almost all types of handguns. Britain seemed to get safer by the minute, as 162,000 newly-illegal firearms were forked over to British officials by law-abiding citizens.
But this didn't decrease the amount of gun-related crime in the U.K. In fact, gun-related crime has nearly doubled in the U.K. since the ban was enacted.

And you'd rather be stabbed instead?
Your government isn't going to save you. In situations like this the police are only good for getting there in time to haul off bodies that are still warm.
