He fucking worked magic with the economy.

Putin is definitely no model leader- he has brought Russia to a fairly level standard of democracy and development similar to the west, but at the cost of shadiness, loopholes, large-scale crime, government-corporation alliances, abuses of power, and, well, being Putin. He is a pretty badass guy, but come on, he's trying to stay in power for as long as possible. Hell, when he was on his way out from the presidency, he raised the power of the prime minister by double, and then practically elected himself to that position and nominating Medvedev, who we all know is his puppet, into office. Their relationship is shady and it's obvious that they're close. But he also doesn't take shit form anyone and is the reason Russia hasn't succumbed tot he western world and become some under-the-radar state with no real say in anything. He's kept Russia strong, so iunno...
