• Dude lands gyrocopter onto the Capitol Building lawn; doesn't die
U.S. Capitol Police said that a small gyrocopter with one occupant landed on the West Lawn of the Capitol on Wednesday afternoon. One person has been detained, Capitol Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said in an e-mail. Eyewitnesses in Capitol offices reported seeing police run toward the aircraft and take the pilot away. The small craft landed in the middle of the West Front Lawn, where the annual Christmas tree and Fourth of July concert stage are set up. [...] The Tampa Bay Times wrote about Doug Hughes, a 61-year-old mailman from Florida, who planned to fly to the Capitol. From their report:
His stated intent: to buzz through the air at 45 miles per hour at about 300 feet up in an ultralight gyrocopter toward Washington, D.C., toward protected airspace, where, if his plan works, he’ll land on the lawn of the United States Capitol building and deliver the mail. Of course, Doug Hughes might be shot out of the sky. He knows this. He has thought about it day and night for more than two years, wrestling with the tiniest details of his insane plan. "No sane person," he said, "would do what I’m doing."

Source
Although he got arrested, what a fucking pair of balls he had. Best mailman 2015!
he wasn't shot down? how the fuck?
The mail always goes through
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds
I thought the whitehouse had AA capabilities
Also, it was the Capitol Building, not the White House. I'll fix the title.
This man sure is dedicated to delivering mail.
I have a feeling it was too small to be triggered by the AA system, for those wondering. Still, that is.. pretty interesting.
Woman in the video really needs to chill the fuck out.
he wasn't shot down? how the fuck?
It was an ultralight gyrocopter, I'd be amazed if it even triggered the AA systems, and besides, even if it got triggered, I doubt it would even have hit. Wire controlled missiles would be hard as fuck to aim at it, and I doubt it made a big enough heat signature for thermal guidance. Not to mention he was only 300ft in the air. Even if it did hit, the shockwave and shrapnel would have been disasterous, I'd almost prefer it hitting a building instead due to the airburst shrapnel.
Also, it was the Capitol Building, not the White House. I'll fix the title.
ah yeah, i had a mix up when i put in the title, thank you
It has a small RCS, isn't exactly easy to target. Not to mention using a patriot against a gyrocopter is kinda like shooting a bunny with a barret... With that said, I wish this man was my mail man, that is some dedication to the cause right there.
Snip
read the damn article or watch the video, he told the flight control an hour before hand he intended to violate the airspace and announced his intention to do this a day ago

The guy is generating data on how to break through US security with his antics. People could have thought about doing this before, but he's the first to actually go through with it and be successful. I wonder how security will be upgraded to compensate for this.
If anything we're pretty lucky that he was the first person to do this.
The load capacity of ultralight aircraft is pretty low, so it would be difficult to deliver anything serious with aircraft such as that. Ultralights would also only be capable of landing on the area around the capital building, and not on it, so while it is a security breech it is more like someone hopping the fence or driving a car onto the property somehow. About the smallest practical helicopter is a robinson R22 and something like that would be easier to see coming. Also as you can see the response was pretty snappy, just a few minutes and the place is already swarming with police.
Reminds me of that german kid who grabbed a Cessna, called it a day and landed in motherfucking RED SQUARE during the 80's... Hope they give the guy a recognition or something. Better him than a fleet of gyrocopters steered by flying terrorists
If he isn't made the official mailman for the Capitol building now then I'll lose faith in this country.

Holy hell people read the damn article or watch the video, he told the flight control an hour before hand he intended to violate the airspace and announced his intention to do this a day ago. They knew where he was going and probably would have shot at him if he veared off from approach. Also shooting him down would do a hell of a lot more damage than that thing could do He did it to raise awareness for campaign finance reform
You know our motto: we deliver!
That's the opposite of a small, lightweight gyrocopter.
That's the opposite of a small, lightweight gyrocopter.
it was just a joke about mail service ._.
he wasn't shot down? how the fuck?
Well he was just going to the capitol building. If he crashed into it, I don't think anyone would bother putting out the fire.
