USMC Drops Four Unarmed Bombs on Australian World Heritage Site

[quote]TWO US Marine Corps jets have been forced to drop four unarmed bombs on the Great Barrier Reef.
The two AV-8B Harrier jets each dropped two 226kg bombs on the world heritage-listed reef in an emergency jettison during a training mission on Tuesday.
The incident came ahead of Exercise Talisman Saber, a biennial training operation between Australian and US forces based at Shoalwater Bay on the central Queensland coast.
The dropped bombs had not detonated and a US official has reportedly said the chance of any of them exploding is "extremely remote".

I don't usually go for sensationalist titles but I couldn't resist.
Unarmed does not mean "not-live". They are very real bombs but were dropped without the intention of detonation
misleading title thanks
Why the fuck are they flying around over the great barrier reef anyway, theres plenty of oceanic airspace.

The barrier reef is an enemy of the united states, we have been encroached upon with malicious intent and will not stand for such a violation of our territory. We reserve the right to defend ourselves.
Ah snip it- my bad guys.

As we speak, Joint-Exercise Talisman Sabre is under way in Queensland. It involves 30 thousand US and Australian troops. The failed bombing run was most likely part of that
the coral was planning an attack, preemptive self defense

What are you, 12?

Eh
I don't take issue with them flying over the reef, events like this would have been unlikely
"Talisman Sabre"
Okay I have to admit that is a pretty badass name
Who comes up with these anyway

No idea, but they've been using that name for these yearly exercises for at least a decade

Very bored people.

The reef is so big it's kinda hard not to if you're hanging out off the coast of eastern Australia.

Military intel had reported that the reef acted as a base for anemone forces.
Ah, damn whichever mod changed the title of the thread!
They were on their way to a training mission over an island, but once they got there, they were told that the training range wasn't clear and they had to essentially wait. They waited as long as they could before heading back and I guess they must have been too late because they didn't have enough fuel to land with the bombs, so they dropped them and made sure they wouldn't explode on impact. That's what I understood from the article that I had read earlier today. Not sure why they decided to wait so long before heading back where they were required to drop the bombs in order to land.

I suspect there are rules regarding landing with ordnance. Safety and all that
"Unarmed" bombs cannot detonate unless exposed to extreme heat, needs an electrical signal to prime it first

It might have broken some coral when it fell but I'm sure it'll be alright

being sarcastic doesn't mean you're being witty

Probably assumed they would be able to land soon. But when they weren't able too, they started heading back. Then they jettisoned the bombs without arming them to conserve on fuel.
What, did we find oil there?
