US to accept 2,000 of “the most vulnerable” Syrian refugees
150 replies, posted
More than two million Syrians have fled their war-torn country, with many settling in nearby Lebanon and Jordan. Now, the US will open its doors to 2,000 of “the most vulnerable” Syrian refugees – as long as they pass a lengthy background screening.
Two thousand Syrians will be granted the opportunity to live in the US, marking a significant increase from the approximately 90 Syrian refugees the US admitted over the last two years, according to Foreign Policy’s The Cable.
I guess the message is good
It's probably not going to be any better.
Well, I suppose not having the threat of a cluster bomb being dropped on your home, or a mortar, or a tank, or an RPG, or an FSA rebel killing you because of your differences to what they want, or a bunch of other things.
So.. Maybe this wouldn't be horrible for whoever gets chosen. That sounds really awful.
I don't see why people hate the place they live in. Seems pretty god damn nice to me if you don't have to worry about above, every day for the past couple years.

why is this post debating with itself
yes, it will be far, far, far better, there's zero argument that the US is better than a country experiencing violent revolution
holy fuck more immigrants
and I bet you anything they're gonna be on government assistance

It's like you really enjoy paying for stupid shit like that
I feel really conflicted about this.
It's like you really enjoy paying for stupid shit like that
I have zero qualms with supporting people whose homes have been destroyed and families ruined due to random violence.
Seriously, there's millions of people receiving federal aid. 2,000 people is a drop in the bucket. Not even hundredths of a tax cent for all of them. It's xenophobic to think that, since they're foreigners, they won't try to find work and they'll leech off of federal aid their entire life.
It's fucking idiotic to think that getting people out of an environment where they have fucking mortar shells falling on their neighbors houses is "stupid shit." Your tax dollars support tons of far less-deserving people and far less-deserving programs. I can't see how this is anything but good.
Yeah because when our country's economy is in shitter and we are in debt we should make it OUR problem to take these people in. I'm all for helping people out but we don't have the fucking resources to do it. Besides, we still have lazy people getting welfare so adding onto that won't solve shit.
[editline]Edit:[/editline]
and hell yeah I think they'll go on government assistance, not forever but for a good amount of time
Yeah because when our country's economy is in shitter and we are in debt we should make it OUR problem to take these people in. Yeah, fuck helping people! It's not like 25% of your taxes go to the military, who then throw it out the window on broken fighter planes and tanks that they toss in a hangar.
2,000 people will cost you absolutely fucking nothing. You aren't paying anything more in the first place - they're not going to ramp up taxes to help pay for these people.
Also, not to start a welfare argument, but I know dozens of people on welfare and they are far from lazy. Minimum wage is hardly enough to pay for most expenses - even in Texas, where rent and housing is cheap as fuck.
Seriously, you're complaining about a couple hundred thousand saving people from an incredibly volatile environment and supporting people who can barely get by with two shitty part-time jobs, yet you don't care that the USA blows out roughly 10% of your tax dollar on military R&D and production that goes nowhere?

Holy fucking liberal.
#1 If you think the military throws our taxes "out the window" you're fucking clueless.
#2 If someone can't afford to live in a house on minimum wage maybe they should go get a real fucking job that pays more than minimum wage- and yeah, there are jobs that pay $12-$15 an hour that require no college experience.
#3 Once again, why is it our job to help these people? Oh yeah blah blah America we love people, bullshit. It's not our responsibility.
Seriously move out of your fucking parents house kiddie.
haha holy shit why the hell shouldn't they go on federal aid
they probably lost their fucking houses to bombs and their families to angry men with machetes and aks
there are far worse reasons for living on welfare than that
also, its just 2000 people
aka fucking nothing
Why is it the US's responsibility?

Reminds me of the lost boys from Sudan.
military does throw out money, see: military industrial complex ($200 for a screwdriver, $50 for a bolt you can get at fucking home depot, or hell, the whole f35 program)
I meant in comparison to wasting tax dollars on lazy fuckers on welfare.
I mean at least that shit gets put to use.

#1 Half a trillion on a failure of a jet program is "out the window" to me. Not nearly all of it, but plenty.
#2 Please go find this land where you can pluck jobs off of trees. Nearly all jobs are minimum wage and part-time in the area where I live, and we hardly got the worst of the recession. I know people who had stable, full-time waiting jobs at high-quality restaurants that were forced part-time and had their hours repeatedly cut to unlivable levels. You can't really just quit when you have next to no savings due to scraping by on your salary for a year. You take whatever you find, and $12/hr jobs are very difficult to find.
#3 Because not helping this is a cuntish thing to do? It's not our job, but it's not our job to build fighter jets or spend billions making a giant data storage center for the NSA.
I don't give a single fuck if it's our responsibility or not. It's not my responsibility to go to Africa for a gap year to help the impoverished, but I do it anyways because I'm not a selfish cunt. It's not my responsibility to help others, sure, but why the fuck wouldn't I?
I'm spending a year in Africa next year. I've gone to half a dozen marches in Austin. The fuck kind of point are you trying to make?

Hey maybe stop and do something with your life and you get this thing called money.
Idk learn a SKILL or make yourself useful?
ie: Welder
Mechanic
3D engineer
The list goes on and guess what? These jobs are fucking everywhere.
The fuck kind of point are you trying to make?
That yeah it's good to help people but not when you yourself are up to your knees in shit.
Also notice in the population growth in the US? Do we need more?

Yes, let's not help get people out of Syria, let's go bomb the entire fucking thing with the new jets we spent half a trillion dollars on. That solves the problem, too, and you don't need to support people!
Yes, there are lazy fuckers on welfare. So fucking what? There are people who would die in the streets without it. My sister's boyfriend has an incurable disease that causes him to sieze randomly and lock up all his muscles. He wasn't able to afford college, and jobs are incredibly difficult for him to hold because no slave-wage jobs want a kid that could disappear for a week unable to move his limbs due to an incurable disease. They'll just say "sorry we didn't pick you."
He survives off of government disability aid. Cut that off, and he's on the street in a matter of weeks because it's almost impossible for him to hold any salaried job. The only jobs he can do are craigslist manual labor jobs.
Fuck welfare, right? Just chop it all off, let him basically starve to death and relegate disability benefits to paying for his medication, he can worry about a job and pull himself up by his bootstraps, fuck the fact that he seizes and has full-body paralysis at random.

Did I say end welfare?
No, I don't recall saying that.
I would consider myself relatively anti-immigration, but it seems xenophobic to be against these people coming in. They're extremely vulnerable and the costs that will incur from taking these people in will be insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

thanks but im educated, a european national, and speak a couple of languages so im just fine
but im not everyone. im not my friend whos mum got cancer and had to drop out of school in order to support himself. im not the kid who lives in a remote commuter town where jobs are outsourced miles away. im not the minority who got a bad start and has little opportunities as a result of that.
2.8 million children in the us live in poverty. minimum wage in the united states is not enough to escape poverty, but so many people have no other choice but to take that minimum wage.
poverty is the tragedy of the modern age

Please, find a welding apprenticeship that pays an adult enough to afford food, rent, and gas. You won't find one. You need money to do these things, and the minimum-wage fast food/waiting shit leaves you $0 in savings at the end of the month.
It's not easy to find a job. If it was, people would be taking these fucking jobs. They don't have the money to survive an apprenticeship for months.

Oh ho ho shit guess what that's my job- and get this. It's fucking possible to live off it.
It's called rent an apartment and work over time.

No, I don't recall saying that.
Then why the fuck are you opposed to helping 2,000 individuals who had their homes fucking mortared and their belongings looted and destroyed?
You can complain about lazy if you want, but that's not lazy, that's being a victim of random violence that no insurance will cover. You can't really fucking work when your office is shut down due to threats of bombings.

Well, guess what, you're lucky!
You're not the one with a mortar shell in your bed!
You're not the one with a crippling disability that prevents you from finding a stable job!
You're not the one with tens of thousands of dollars of college debts that suck into your income!
You're not the one who can't afford the medical bills for your own cancer!
Fucking self-centered little cunt, seriously. People need help, and I don't see why getting 2,000 people out of an environment where they could die at any time is such an outrage. It'll cost maybe 200k. Yet you have no qualms with 480 billion on a failed jet fighter program. This is an atom on the surface of a tax cent in comparison.

I don't give a shit if my taxes don't raise, it's money that could be better spent elsewhere. You people all say that "oh it doesn't effect you who cares" is a stupid argument about privacy but now it's perfectly legitimate. Fuck off.
This money could go to NASA or improving schools not doing charity work for 2000 uneducated refugees. So go ahead and give me your boxes feeling all holier than thou taking the moral high ground.
Why complain about helping 2000 people? A slippery slope argument is retarded.
Seriously, take half a trillion from the F-35s and you can fund NASA for a decade. This costs nothing. Humanitarian aid is as noble a cause as NASA or education.
