The moth's official name is Neopalpa donaldtrumpi A new species of tiny moth has been named after Donald Trump, partly because the President-elect’s hairstyle resembles the moth’s distinctive yellow and white scales. The minuscule creature, named Neopalpa donaldtrumpi, is the first species to bear the name of the soon-to-be president, whose inauguration is this Friday. It was discovered by Vazrick Nazari, a biologist and researcher from Ottawa, Canada.
http://time.com/4637403/tiny-moth-donald-trump/ Edit: [t]http://i.imgur.com/LYpjqIn.jpg[/t]

everyone check your twitter feeds
that moth did nothing wrong. why did you have to give it such a shit name
It's the best moth. The greatest moth.
why
Because there's billions of random insignificant things to name in biology, and somebody thought it would be funny. Pretty sure there's a gene named after pikachu or something.
why
Maybe they were thinking of its larval stage.
it's not even subtle lmao
of all things
President moth. The best moth. He'll keep out those lazy rapist butterflies.
why
Because it has gold hair and a tiny penis according to sources [T]http://i.imgur.com/eLJauDA.jpg[/t]
Because it has gold hair and a tiny penis according to sources [T]http://i.imgur.com/eLJauDA.jpg[/t]
I'm betting the "tiny penis" thing was just started by one clickbait article and perpetuated by several others. More legitimate sources don't mention it at all.

they could've been a bit more clever with it

And here I thought scientists were a stoic bunch with no interest in politics. It's gonna be an awful four years when this kind of pettiness abounds.

I think in this context it may be out of respect - Obama has a few species named after him. The one that comes to mind is Etheostoma obama (A colorful species of Darter fish). I think usually you go by the nomenclatural rules until you have a couple species in the genus before doing this though.
And here I thought scientists were a stoic bunch with no interest in politics.
And here I thought scientists were a stoic bunch with no interest in politics. It's gonna be an awful four years when this kind of pettiness abounds.
Wait, is this petty? It's just someone naming a moth after trump. I have a feeling the scientists themselves aren't trying to spin it into a negative thing, and were just amused by the resemblance.
Wait, is this petty?
I swear I've seen literally everything under the sun called "petty" the past few weeks and I don't know why
Actually it was named that for a very important reason...sort of
“The new species is named in honor of Donald J. Trump,” Nazari wrote in a review of the species. “The reason for this choice of name is to bring wider public attention to the need to continue protecting fragile habitats in the U.S. that still contain many undescribed species. The specific epithet is selected because of the resemblance of the scales… of the moth to Mr. Trump’s hairstyle.”
too bad nothing will happen since conservatives are pushing to get rid of laws protecting endangered species and this moth will just have a dumb name :v:
And here I thought scientists were a stoic bunch with no interest in politics. It's gonna be an awful four years when this kind of pettiness abounds.
Ideally science and politics shouldn't really overlap but sadly much of science has become incredibly partisan in places like the US. I can't imagine some scientists are too pleased that their field of expertise is being undermined and sabotaged for political points.
"Hmm, how can I get this new discovery of mine to make headlines..."
And here I thought scientists were a stoic bunch with no interest in politics. It's gonna be an awful four years when this kind of pettiness abounds.
Please. Trump has threatened to pull the plug on American climate monitoring satellites and his SoE appointee wants religion taught in schools. Scientists are not the problem.

Surely Republicans wouldn't want donaldtrumpi to go extinct.
